The KSF Great Easter Gift Guide: Toys to Love

Posted: March 31st, 2009

Today’s post written by Miki

………………………………………………………………………………………………

Easter is a joyous time of year. Its significance changes from family to family, but whether it be your annual reason to attend church or mass, to go on the hunt for your area’s best hot cross buns, or painstakingly bake your own – my neighbour does this which impresses me more than I can say! – to have a family gathering, to go on holiday, or to eat your body weight in chocolate, Easter is a special time.

Children at Easter time are often the recipients of gifts, and although these have often consisted of chocolate in the past, trends are changing.  More and more parents want to make Easter special for their kids without having to put up with the little ones’ huge sugar-fueled tantrums or clean up chocolate vomit!  And so the hunt for clever, stylish, non-edible Easter gifts begins.

Below is a small selection of my favourites for little people. A couple of stores that deserve special mentions are Happy Little Hippos, who have a wonderful Easter Gift section to make your life easy, and ShopHouse who have a generous 25% off a selection of Cocoon Couture beanbags – the designs which feature bunnies, naturally ;)

Stay tuned for more great Easter ideas, coming every day this week – from fashion to gifts, to craft, we’ve got Easter covered!

Mixtape Monday: Grow, Paint and Eat! – Easy Craft for Kids

Posted: March 30th, 2009

Welcome to the March edition of ‘Mixtape Monday’, our last-Monday-of-the month burst of craft and inspiration, brought to us by Justine at Mixtape Zine.

Today’s piece on easy craft for kids, authored by Laura, of SugarChill and SeaBird Chronicles blogs , is just perfect for the upcoming Easter break when you need a little extra amusement up your sleeve.

Laura lives by the beach in Miami, USA. She has twin toddlers and is overly fond of organic gelato, daydreaming, and swimming. Her blog, SeaBird Chronicles, covers the art, design, and craft scene with a side of Miami, children, and food.

Enjoy! - Angela. Read previous issues of Mixtape Monday here.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Here is a week’s worth of crafts and creative activities for young children. I could go on about all the benefits of fine motor skill development, science lessons, and art concepts in these ideas – but then they wouldn’t be quite so fun!

1. Puffy Paintings: Mix together equal parts self-raising flour and salt. Add enough water to form the consistency of white glue. Distribute among several small containers and add food colouring as desired. Let your child use cotton swabs to paint on a piece of cardboard (a cereal box, milk carton, etc). Microwave the painting for about 30 seconds – the paint will rise and harden for a fun 3D effect!

2. Growing Grass Hair: Place a couple of dozen grass seeds in the bottom of a clear plastic cup and cover with a dozen cotton balls. Add enough water to moisten the cotton balls without drowning the seeds. Create a face on the side of the cup. Check each day if the cotton balls need a bit of water . . . in a week or two Grass Guy’s hair will need a trim!

3. Stained Glass Collage: Place a large piece of contact paper on the table or floor, sticky side up and masking tape the edges down. Place a handful of collage bits (pipe cleaners, leaves, tissue paper, shapes, flowers, wrapping paper, feathers, buttons) next to it and your child can go crazy! To seal it, remove the masking tape and fold the contact paper in half – or – cut another piece of contact paper and place it on top. Looks colorful hanging in a bright window – or you can make small ones for the Christmas tree!

4. Pretzel Necklaces: Even the youngest toddlers can do this. Tie a pretzel to the end of a decorative piece of yarn and show your child how to add more. When they’re finished tie the ends together and they can munch away! (Under supervision while the necklace is around their neck!)

5. Box Train: Cut several cardboard boxes (cereal or fabric softener boxes, etc) a few inches from the tops. Your child can paint/glue/marker to decorate the box tops. Then punch a hole on each shorter side of the boxes and run a string through two or three to make a train, with the open side up so it can be filled with cargo and dragged around the house! If you end up with extra box ends, you can use them as drawer organisers. You can find photos of all the activities above – completed by my two year-old sons – at
SeaBird Chronicles. Have fun!

This article can be found in issue 7 of Mixtape Zine. You can buy current and backcopies of Mixtape here.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Generation Wonder – www.generationwonder.com is one of my favourite online children’s boutique. Filled with a unique selection of clothing, toys, books, bedding and decor for kids, proprietor Mihiri chooses all products for their organic, fair trade or earth friendly qualities, as well as their beautiful design.

Generation Wonder stock an amazing range of brands, including Kidsonroof, Barefoot, Zid Zid Kids, Fleurville, Thermos, Crocodile Creek, Craft Aid Mauritius, Essential Angel, Taylor and Khoo, Ethica Accessories,  Global Fund for Children, Global Mamas, Kindred Magazine, Lanka Kade, OBON, Organic Bubs, Papoose, Plato Puzzles, Remarkable UK, Sisters of Good Shepherd, Third World Craft Nepal, Tiny Revolutionary, Turtlegreen, Whole Child Series, and Blessed Earth. Hot Tip: To locate all the brands on the Generation Wonder site, use the site map.

One of the most lovely things about Gen W is that they take the time to tell you the story behind the products, which is especially nice because you can then pass the story on to the lucky recipient of your purchases. It’s a feel-good factor from start to finish!

New to Generation Wonder is gorgeous UK brand Piccalilly. In addition to Piccalilly’s gorgeous organic cotton baby and kids basics, you have to check out the Ballerina Dress. Piccalilly also produce some gorgeous bedding (organic cotton and fair trade) that has been made free from harmful chemicals and for children with sensitive skin or excema these would be ideal. The best thing is Generation Wonder have some adorable new designs just in that range in price from $29.99 – $39.99.

I have to admit I was stuck in the decor and toys section at Generation Wonder for quite some time. It is hard to decide what too choose, it’s all so good! Luckily, every Monday there is a new Gift Set of the Week, which makes life a bit easier for indecisive folks like me. Mihiri, personally selects a gift combo and always 20% off the regular price (for one week only), so be sure to check in on Monday for the latest deals. This is a great way to stock the present cupboard.

Generation Wonder have also added some new ‘departments’ since we last visited them: browse Imagine and Create, Décor, and Music in Me, as well as the Bedding section to make lots of new and fabulous discoveries.

The Winter ‘09 Roundup: Luxe Knits to Cosy Up To

Posted: March 27th, 2009

Today’s post written by Kat

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Snuggling into a lush, cosy knit is one of the simple joys of Winter. Ok, so the weather report tonight saw all capital cities hitting the mid-20’s, but it’s definitely the time of year to snap up a cardi or two, rub the soft, soft fabric against your cheek (surely we all do this?!) and store it carefully til the mercury drops.

1). Handmade is no longer the domain of the daggy; no siree, it is in fact now the epitome of hip. If your Nanna can’t knit, find another who can – Etsy is choc full of other people’s handmade goodness, and many sellers will take personalised orders. It’s a fast ticket to instant playground cred!

GrannysKnits is a hit with celebs, with these funky Letter Sweaters (US$50) in high demand. HandKnitHugs have gorgeous, simple knits like this Stripe button through cardi (US$36), while I was enchanted by the gorgeous blue of EveldasNeverland soft kimono cardi (US$32). Too cute!

2). Minihaha got a mention last week in our Coats special, but this week again I’m going to point you in the direction of kounia-bella for beautiful knits for boys and girls. Is there anything cuter than a preppy Argyle Vest ($49.50, Bebe Jnr by Minihaha) on a little man? And possibly the prettiest cardi of the season, the Trixie Lollipop cardigan by Minihaha ($74) is a soft angora blend and perfect for princesses in pink.

3). ShopHouse have all Oobi’s must-have knits, including the ever so cute Cable Knit Cardi ($64.95; grey, white or red) and the playfully vintage Nanna’s Strawberry Knit Cardi ($44.95). Love the strawberry buttons! If you haven’t had an Oobi knit with their adorable little bear ears on the hood, I strongly suggest it. Everyone you meet will stop and admire your cute-as-a-button child.

4). Purebaby has always featured strongly in my daughter’s wardrobe, and even though she’s nearly outgrown the size 2’s *sob* I’m determined to squeeze every last organic drop out of the pieces we have. Yes, that has meant knitted pinnys in summer, but with bare legs and sandals, it looks rather cute. (And also like I haven’t washed any of her sundresses…)

This season, the Knitted Vest ($54.95) is on my (wish)list, while the single button Knitted Cardigan ($54.95) is a super cool new spin on an old classic. Little boys can rug up in their own Knitted Vest with a cool front pocket ($44.95) or slip on a funky Knitted Jumper ($49.95). Yes, it has a pig on it. They’ll love it.

5). Let’s face it, Europeans do winter to a T. If a bit of Euro-style is what your child’s wardrobe wants, head to Charlipop Kids for a great range of brands including 3 Pommes, Alphabet, Krickets and Oilily.

For just $34.45, this glam grey cardi by Krickets is so girly and chic, while  I’ve just gone and had a bit of a coo over the cute deisgns by Alphabet, including the Les Petite Parisiennes Black Knit cardi ($39). Little boys won’t mind that you put them in a beige cardi when the see the cute teddy bear patch (Alphabet, $29) and they can even rock the uber-chic Apres look with this funky Krickets Baffin Isle Hooded Knit ($35). Even Nanna would approve of this one.

6). Little indulgence for girly girls now – Tea Princess, readily available at La Toriana, is quickly gaining a huge following, and it’s easily to see why. Whimsical, vintage styles are made thoroughly modern, and completely adorable, in a beautiful range of knits, frocks and accessories. A little crochet cardigan for newborns is such a classic piece you’ll want to keep forever ($35.96 on sale); while the Pink Vintage Cardi ($54.95, available April) is so wonderfully girly and just right for tea parties.

7). Emperor’s Laundry is a range I came across at a trade show last year. The designs are simple, unique and have a real old-world charm about them. The Bamboo Cotton Knits ($45) come in pink, red, or green and are so lush and soft (oh, and they look pretty darn cool too!) They also do gorgeous knit dresses and charming hair accessories; and though none of these come with an addiction warning, consider this a stern hint…

Please check individual stores for postage and delivery information.

15% off all Gifts4Kidz: Automoblox, Pintoy, Wheely Bug, Posh Pyjamas, Rush, SunnyLIFE, Books to Wear + more

Posted: March 26th, 2009

Today’s post written by Miki

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

I don’t know how Sanja at Gifts4Kidz – www.gifts4kidz.com.au – does it, but every time I visit her beautiful online children’s gift store her range seems to have tripled from what it was at the previous visit.  And it was already big to start with!

Not only is there a lot more to drool over – ahem, I mean look at – but every piece is fantastic.  There are loads of my favourite brands represented, such as Pintoy wooden toys, Books To Wear pyjamas, Rush and Wheelybug – and, believe me, that’s the barest sampling!

Sanja also has a knack for finding fantastic new brands and products. SunnyLIFE is one such example – I hadn’t seen their products ’til I browsed G4K – but now I’m a big fan of their beach-themed gifts for slightly older children, and Posh Pyjamas who do stunning sleepwear for teenage girls and adult women.

Sanja is also just about to introduce new lines of clothing including Minihaha, Bebe, Woof!, Marquise and Little Leona.  These will mainly be sold in sets to take all hassle out of buying clothes online – keep your eyes peeled!

The G4K homepage has also been updated with new features such as Show & Tell, featuring a new product each week, and What’s On 4 Kidz which will list up and coming events for kids and families throughout Australia.

What makes Gifts4Kidz so easy to use is that no matter what age the child you’re buying for, whether newborn or teenage or somewhere in between, there’s a whole category of thoughtfully selected presents to choose from.

This of course makes it super-easy to buy for other people’s children – I never do know what to buy for five year old girls! – but also for your own child. You don’t need to wade through a vast array of fluffy toys if you’re buying for a 12 year old boy, but you also don’t need to look at all the cricket sets and skateboards if you’re buying for a toddler girl.  See, easy!  You may *want* to look at everything though, as it’s all so cool!

Gifts4Kidz is offering KSF readers 15% off store-wide until the 10th of April 2009:  just enter ‘KSF09′ at checkout. Please note that this discount cannot be used with any other offer.

You can take 15% off all prices below with the code ‘KSF09′ until 10 April 2009.

1. Roller Surfer Pro, $199.95
2. SunnyLIFE Beach Paddles, $19.95

4. Read With Me Book Set, $32.95
5. Pintoy Teaching Clock, $45.00

Bubble New York – DesignElefante Cruising Shelf

Posted: March 26th, 2009

Today’s post written by Angela

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Today, more news from the Bubble trade-show which was held in New York earlier this month.

I was lucky enough to attend, and it was a fantastic, and very inspirational, expedition across the pond.

To see new sights, taste new tastes and meet new and very talented people is so good for the soul, and I’ll be sharing that with you for weeks to come. As we ease into the cooler months, the other side of the planet has started to bloom into spring. What a beautiful world we do live in.

Adding to the beauty, and practicality, of baby and kids decor is DesignElefante – www.designelefante.com – comprised of Minnesota-based husband and wife team, Jonathon and Veronica Gomez Whitney.

Veterans of the art and design world, the pair ran fine art galleries and designed women’s fashion labels before moving into display art for commercial clients. The birth of their daughter, Paloma, in 2007 opened up a whole new world of design to the Gomez Whitneys: the DesignElefante Cruising Shelf is the culmination of Jonathon and Veronica’s design talent, and the experience of raising a child.

The DesignElefante Cruising Shelf is a narrow profile floating shelf of just the perfect size to accommodate small toys and decor items. What makes the DesignElefante Cruising Shelf different from other forms of shelving is that there is a finger’s-width groove routed in the outside edge, which is just right for little hands to grip into. This important details allows small children to easily pull themselves up, and feel supported as they are learning to walk.

The groove can hold drawing supplies once your child is older, and the shelf can be mounted at any height so it has good longevity. These shelves would also be perfect for in-store displays.

Jonathan handmakes each shelf himself from urea formaldehyde free MDF (a recycled wood material) coated with low VOC certified paint to ensure a safe, CPSC certified, product for your child. Jonathan and Veronica also sew and hand silkscreen all DesignElefante packaging.

You can buy the DesignElefante Cruising Shelf from the DesignElefante Etsy store for USD$65.00 plus postage. Please contact Jonathan at DesignElefante for more details.
