The Winter ’09 Roundup: Coat Tales – The Best Coats for Little Bods

Posted: March 20th, 2009

Man, I love a good coat. More so than a good frock, and that’s saying something!! The thing is, as you get older it’s harder to get away with gorgeous trimmings, bright colours or sweet prints (not impossible, mind, just harder). But kids have no limits – and so it brings me great pleasure (tinged with mild envy) to present the most gorgeous winter coats of the season!

1). Elodie & Elvis create the most magical pieces, in elegant, classic styles. They’re not exactly ‘budget-friendly’ but their coats make the most wonderful heirlooms and are a must for those who go all gooey for good old-fashioned children’s pieces. Plus, they are slighty cheaper, and more unique, than a kids’ Burberry trench coat, so if you’re after a keepsake, justify it thus. The Elodie & Elvis website has all their collections, and you can contact them for local stockist details. For girls, the French Floral coat and the Lana duffle coat are incredibly gorgeous; while boys can look smart and very cool in the Max Cord Blazer.

2). Eternal Creation create, beautiful pieces in a fair-trade environment, from newborns through to 10 years – there are SO many adorable coats it’s hard to narrow it down! I love the classic design of the red Wool Jacket with it’s sweet patterned buttons ($89.95, 3m-36 months),  and the super cool simplicity of the Wool Forest Jacket ($89.95, 3m-36 months). Bigger boys can be warm, cosy and stylish in the chocolate Pinstripe Street Jacket ($129.95, 2Y-10Y) and girls will feel so grown up in this 40′s style Mackintosh ($79.95, 2-10 years)!

3). Sooki Baby’s padded, reversible jackets are my all-time fave for newborns-size 2. My daughter had a cute spotty one last year and it was so perfectly warm, cosy and cute that I’m hoping she can still squeeze into it for a few weeks this season. This year, the girls’ jackets have a single front button, cape-style (tres chic) in pink with ballerina print, or red with a cute srtipey trim; while boys can go for a classically cute look in a baby blue zip-up! Check the website’s stockist page, or find Sooki online in heaps of places including My Baby Rocks and Itty Bitty Yuppy.

4). Super cool Aussie label Ouch is readily available at Baby’s Got Style, and these classic styles won’t break the budget – the Caramel Trench ($54.95, 0-7) is uber chic (Mum needs one too!). Plus, they do possibly the coolest raincoat ever, Black Flying Skulls, just $24.95 in sizes 0-6!

5). Freshbaked is another fabulous label, with gorgeous designs at great prices – their website showcases their range and also lists an ample range of stockists. From casual hooded jackets to cute puffa jackets (yes, they exist!) and the sweetest swing coats, the designs are simple and sensible but with such cute touches; and kids love them too (trust me!)

6). I couldn’t resist stopping by Tiny People in the name of research – they stock possible the coolest Military Jacket ever, by the extraordinarily beautiful label, Paper Wings ($220, sizes 3-6); this gorgeous swing coat by the irresistible Polka ($80, sizes 2-7); the retro cool Kiniky Jacket by Munster ($90, sizes 2-8), and this hipper than hip plaid coat by another Aussie label worth watching, Chalk & Cheese ($159, sizes 2-6).

DIY: The Crafty Crow Tutorials – Rainy Day Craft Inspiration

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Winter is still a few months away (hopefully), but I wanted to share a website with you that when the rain starts to fall you are going to want to know about!

The Crafty Crow – http://belladia.typepad.com/crafty_crow – is a childrens craft collective run by a homeschooling Momma from high in the Mountains of Idaho. It is essentially a ever growing list of links to projects that are a great resource if you want to try some cute, clever and easy crafty type projects at home.

There is something very nurturing about sharing a little sticky tape and glue with your loved one, and kids don’t care if you can only draw like a child (lucky for me!).  It kinda reminds me of playschool, but on the web. There is something for everyone at The Crafty Crow!

Here are some of my favourite ideas from The Crafty Crow. The titles are linked to the project ‘tutorials’.

Pasta Rainbow Sun Catcher

Paper Bag Buildings

Shaving Cream Fun

Cardboard House

Pin Spinners

Head over to The Crafty Crow, bookmark it and be in craft heaven with just a click of your mouse!

Baby’s Got Hot New Winter Style: Check Out New Ouch, Pure Baby, Rock Your Baby and Heaps More, PLUS Enter the Alimrose Design Comp

It’s extraordinarily difficult to pin down what I love best about Baby’s Got Style – www.babysgotstyle.com.au.

Is it the amazingly fantastic range of kids’ fashion that they stock?  The website which is a dream to navigate? The super-fast delivery? The kick-ass sale warehouse? Or is it the frequency with which they update their stock, meaning that there’s always something hot and new to look at?

Honestly, I don’t know which to pick out of that list apart from *all* of the above ;)

Let’s start with the fab new stock currently arriving at BGS, because frankly I think it’s one of the best collections online of all my favourite kidswear brands.

First up let’s look at Ouch. I love their take on fresh, funky streetwear for kids – it’s hip but extremely wearable, and take my word on it, tough as nails.  This season graphic tees are very much in evidence, along with feminine blouses and waffle grandpa tees (these will be a hit with both sexes). I also really like the Ouch skivvies.  Much maligned in the past few years, the humble skivvy has been given a makeover by Ouch and the result is great!  With a ruffle neckline, they look good enough to wear anywhere, and come in four fab colourways (black, hot pink, pale pink and white).

Hint: put a skivvy under a summer top or dress to instantly make it a funky winter outfit. Layers are always hip, and this is a practical way of getting more use out of summer items which haven’t been outgrown yet.

Also new in store are ranges from Pure Baby, Rock Your Baby (check out their ADORABLE knit hats below!), Baobab, Marquise and über hip NZ brand Minti. I have already run out of room for describing these brands’ many and varied virtues to you, so you’re going to have to click on all the links that I’ve helpfully provided and check ‘em out for yourselves.  I promise it’s worth it, but you already knew that anyway!

Last thing I want to mention is the Alimrose Design Competition. It goes like this: submit your own original design for a new Alimrose soft toy, and get the chance to see your toy put into production, receive the very first five pieces of the toy produced plus another $500 worth of Alimrose goodies! Woo! Find out more about this comp here, and make sure your entries are submitted by March 31.
