If you are in Sydney this coming weekend – specifically this Sunday 5th June – be sure to put this red letter event in your calendar: Mathilda’s Market – www.mathildasmarket.com.au.

Mathilda’s Market is the gold standard market of designer/maker baby and children’s wares in Australia, presenting the cream of crafters, designers and artists in one stunning event.

Anne Lewis, founder of Mathilda’s Market works hard to keep each event fresh and wonderful, with three quarters of the stall-holders being brand new to every event.

This Sunday you will find 70 stands packed with a diverse range of gorgeous produce exclusively for babies and children, from fashion, to shoes, to art, to dressups and much more, from the retro to the ultra modern. You will also find delicious food and drink at the venue to keep you refreshed, and there will be face painting for the kids to keep them smiling.

This edition of Matilda’s Market will be held at the St Ignatius College Riverview, Tambourine Bay Rd, Lane Cove, Sydney. The event runs from 9am-1pm. Entry and parking is absolutely FREE, so you’ll have more cash to spend on the abundance of goodies at hand :)

Baby’s Got Essential Style – New Purebaby Essentials Range + WIN a Lovestamp Necklace + WIN a $200 BGS Gift Voucher!

Posted: June 29th, 2009

Today’s post written by Miki

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

I’ve been indulging myself in one of my favourite pastimes just now.  I made myself a cup of Earl Grey, I snuck a chocolate biscuit (ok, fine, two), and I sat myself down in front of the computer and went straight to Baby’s Got Style – www.babysgotstyle.com.au.

I’m sure by now you all know about the divine range of goodness that is BGS.  You’ll know all about the ever-continuing range of hot new products that Daniela and her team work tirelessly to source, and you’ll know about how you can win a $200 BGS voucher every month simply by signing up to their newsletter.  You’ll already know all about the vast range of boutique brands stocked (see below the image collage for the full list), and you’ll probably have placed enough orders to know about the spectacular customer service provided.

It’s little wonder it’s Australia’s premier baby and kids online boutique really, isn’t it?

But have you dropped in lately and seen what’s new in store?  Personally, I’m really excited by the Purebaby Essentials range: an incredibly well-priced everyday organics range, which looks fantastic (as you’d expect from Purebaby) but also washes beautifully and feels absolutely divine (as you’d expect from Purebaby). There’s a good range of colours which can be matched or mixed according to your mood, and the cut looks so comfy (as you’d expect from Purebaby!) that I find myself wishing they’d hurry up and make an adults’ range!

Another new line instore are the Lovestamp necklaces; simple and elegant, these silver necklaces stamped with your child’s name – or children’s names, you can easily add extra tags – are an incredibly special keepsake, and would also make a beautiful gift for a grandmother, godmother or special person in your child’s life.

Baby’s Got Style have a competition running at the moment where you could win a Lovestamp Silhouette boy or girl necklace, personalised with your child’s name and valued at $99.95.  It’s easy – all you have to do is email Baby’s Got Style (with ‘Lovestamp comp’ in the subject field) and tell them in 50 words or less why you would like to wear the love.

Go Local

Whatever your tastes may be (for food, drink, clothes, books, etc.), shopping at local and small businesses with your children allows them to see how to support the local economy (not to mention that your family is helping to minimise its carbon footprint, fuel consumption, and air pollution). Your children will also come to value real people, who are working hard in local shops and markets to supply your home with goods.

Bringing your children to local markets and shops offers an opportunity to socialise and save money too (if you enjoy haggling and vendors are willing to do so). As often as possible, when our family needs to purchase items new, we make an effort buy local from small businesses.

Buy Secondhand

When searching for items that are not available locally, one of the best ways to live environmentally is to search for secondhand products available online, in thrift shops, consignment stores, and at salvation sales. Not only will your family save money, but you’ll be helping prolong the life of an item and helping to divert what might have ended up in a landfill. Gently used items are usually in excellent condition and can be of better quality than similarly priced new items.

Also, crafty parents and children can find one-of-a-kind items to use for art projects and to remake into new items with a bit of sewing and embellishment. The possibilities at secondhand stores are endless with a little bit of creativity. The best part about making secondhand purchases with your children in mind is that you are modelling environmentally sound methods for shopping.

Grow your own food

With a seed packet, some dirt, water, and time, your children can have a wonderful hands-on experience with gardening. Watching a seed sprout into a small plant, and then waiting for a plant to grow, bud, and produce vegetables allows children to see the processes and hard work involved, on a larger scale, with farming foods.

To encourage our daughter to participate in caring for our small vegetable garden, we purchased small gardening tools for her, allowed her to dig and plant seedlings, and invited her and our neighbours’ children to water the garden several nights each week.

Growing a garden with children is a fun way for them to learn about plants, and is a wonderful way to teach the value of patience and hard work. Our daughter not only enjoyed working in the garden but delighted in picking and eating what she’d helped grow.

Connect

One of the easiest ways to feel at one with nature is to simply find a path in the woods and walk.

Every week our family ventures onto a path in our neighbourhood that takes us through woods, over streams, and up small mountains. We see birds, deer, insects of all kinds, and many varieties of trees, shrubs, and fungi. Our daughter loves to point out and identify what she sees; my husband and I savour the quiet and stillness available when we are in the midst of Mother Nature.

Other great ways to connect with nature include practising outdoor yoga, going to a park and bird watching. As my daughter grows older, I hope to discover new ways to include a love of nature into her life. It is amazing how much our children are capable of; they make such excellent and natural caretakers of the earth.

The Hip Infant Welcomes Love Mae Fabric Wall Stickers with 10% off Store-wide on All Orders over $65

Posted: June 27th, 2009

Today’s post written by Miki

………………………………………………………………………………………………

I think wall stickers are such a great way to decorate a child’s bedroom – so quick and easy and instant!  They also come off without damaging the surface so it’s easy to redecorate your kid’s room as they get older, and for another thing they’re rental-friendly – can’t paint the walls? No problem – whack on some removable wall stickers and hey presto: a unique and stylish room!

But where to go to get the best wall stickers, and how to choose the right ones for your home?  Don’t worry, it couldn’t be easier: head straight to The Hip Infant – www.thehipinfant.com.au – where Mel has just started stocking the absolutely divine Love Mae fabric wall stickers. Yes, *fabric*!!

The Love Mae wall stickers are absolutely ingenious, and quite unique in the Australian market (possibly even the global market!) because they really are made of fabric.  Not only that, they are completely reusable and can be repositioned as many times as you like! You can move them from wall to wall and reuse them, scrunch them up into balls and reuse them, or even wash them… and then reuse them again!  And if that’s not the perfect kids decor product then I’d like to know what is.

The other wonderful thing about the Love Mae stickers is the incredibly beautiful design range they come in.  Mums of boys (like me), rejoice!  There’s just as much for your little men here as there are designs for the girls, and every single piece is just exquisitely beautiful.  Whether you opt for the classic, unisex ‘Build A Tree’ and then accessorise with birds and forest friends (both available in boy and girl options), or you decide to go down a more gender-specific road with vintage teapots or dinosaurs, there’s a big range of designs to choose from.

I also love the paper dolls-inspired wall stickers for girls.  Do you remember the paper cutout dolls you played with as children, spending hours cutting out dresses to fit her?  Love Mae have taken the concept to the next level, and now there are the wall sticker versions ready to bring home for your little fashionista.  Available in season-specific styles, each doll comes with a range of modern, hip clothes, shoes, accessories and hairstyles – and in the case of the large set containing two dolls, even a bunny suit!

At the moment you can spend over $65 on anything at The Hip Infant (before postage costs), and Mel will take 10% off your order. This offer is only valid until 4 July 2009, and it’s a fantastic chance to stock up on the beautiful Love Mae wall stickers so don’t dally, enter KSF-LOVE at the Coupon Code section at checkout.

Don’t forget that all orders over $65 can take 10% off with code KSF-LOVE until 4 July 2009.

1. Love Mae Fabric Wall Stickers ‘Build A Tree’, $119.95
2. ‘Tea Time’, $79.95
3. ‘Dainty Toadstools’, $79.95
4. ‘Dinosaurs’, $79.95
5. ‘Dress Up Dolls’, $159.95
6. ‘Twitter Birds’ – Blue, $39.95
7. ‘Forest Critters’ – Boy, $79.95

15% off the New ERGObaby Carrier ‘Sport’ + FREE Express Postage + FREE BabyLegs

Posted: June 26th, 2009

Today’s post written by Angela

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

I brought you news of the new ERGObaby Carrier ‘Sport’ model landing in Australia recently, and now I have even more fab news on this new edition babywearing icon:

Babes in Arms – www.babesinarms.com.au – are offering KidStyleFile readers 15% off the ERGObaby Carrier ‘Sport’, PLUS Free Express Postage (rrp $12.40) PLUS a FREE pair of unisex BabyLegs (rrp $16.50) until 10 July 2009.

To redeem this offer phone 1300 725 276 (between 9am-5pm weekdays) to place your order, and mention the KidStyleFile to automatically receive your 15% off discount, FREE postage and FREE Babylegs.

Offering multi-carry (back, front or hip) functionality to Mums and Dads for babies from birth (with optional insert) to pre-school age, the ergonomic design of the ERGObaby Carrier supports a correct sitting position for baby’s physical development and eliminates compression on baby’s spine. ERGObaby Carriers also have a long lifespan, catering for your offspring up to 18kgs, and offering continued support when a baby sling or front carrier is no longer comfortable, and being lighter, and more secure, than a hard-frame baby backpack.

The ERGObaby ‘Sport’ features a detachable sleeping hood, a split at the back for better ventilation, and a 65% cotton/35% polyester blend fabric which effectively wicks moisture away, making it cooler than the standard 100% cotton carrier, and over 20% lighter.

The new ERGObaby Sport was also designed for larger people in mind, especially tall dads who sometimes had a hard time fitting into the regular carrier. In comparison with the standard carrier, the shoulder straps are 4″ longer and the waist belt is 5″ longer as well as being slightly wider.

Babes in Arms/ERGObaby are a sponsor of the 2009 KidStyleFile Annual Reader Survey: complete the survey and go into the draw to win 1 of 8 prize packs, including an ERGObaby Sport Carrier.

Sleep Tight, Sleep Chic 2009: Part 2 – Baby and Kids Bedlinen Update

Posted: June 26th, 2009

Today’s post written by Miki

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Time for more luscious kids bedding – hurrah!  And I think you’ll be pleased to see what I’ve saved for Part II of this post (if you missed Part I, click here).

Starting off today’s field we have Boodalee, in-store now at Ekidna Kids. With striking, eye-catching designs, the Boodalee range features 250 thread count 100% cotton percale, and it’s dyed using a special process to ensure superior colourfastness.  Refreshingly modern and heartwarmingly colourful, this is a range for just about any child and home!

We all love chic homegrown Aussie brand mill&mia, but did you know that they do bed linen as well as their stunning range of clothing?  Yep, they sure do – and it’s as slick as the rest of their range. Starting from $67.50 for a cot duvet or sheet set, there’s a big range of colours and subtle patterns to choose from.

Another seriously stylish Australian brand is Zero+ Designs.  Designed by two mums (one whose background was in retail and the other an interior designer), the range is fresh and modern while incorporating traditional elements – think trucks and butterflies – in a funky new way.  There’s also a truly excellent range of bedding accessories such as cushions, sheet sets and so on.

More homegrown goodness is up next, with sproutdesigns.  Oh my oh my, how I love this brand! There’s a drool-worthy range of hand-screenprinted fabrics and products (all designed and made in Australia of course), and the bedding range has to be seen to be believed.  You should also check out the fabulous selection of room accessories, and for the crafty ones amongst us, you’ll be thrilled to know that sproutdesigns’ fabrics are available by the metre.

The Living Textiles Company has a decent range of products stocked at 9 Months Waiting, and this is an excellent option if you’re after a sweet, traditional design for your nursery.  Once again, this is an Australian-owned company who use only 100% cotton percale, and who rigorously test their products to ensure quality and value for money.

If you want to give your nursery that WOW factor then go for a real investment piece – you’re bound to find a perfect set at Miss Tati & Friends.  Not only is there an enormous selection of cot and single bedding of exceptional quality imported from the US, almost all of it is 40+% off! Miss Tati & Friends also stock a lovely range from Red Plum Linen, another Australian classic.

Lastly but most certainly not leastly is Cot Couture.  An Adelaide-based custom range, Cot Couture is distinctive not only for the spectacular range of fabrics available but also for the fact that the customer can request any combination they like.  Most of the Cot Couture comforters are reversible, meaning that simply flipping over the comforter will create a whole new look.  Ingenious!

There are a couple of special deals running on Cot Couture at the moment: firstly, there’s a sale section on the CC site of ends-of-line fabrics – comforters ordered in these are $125, down from $185. Next, if you want a different fabric, have a look at the range stocked at Chic Mother & Baby as you can take 10% off Cot Couture there using the code ‘VIPJoff’ until June 30.

Today I’d like you to meet a couple of new litle friends of mine. They’re small, smart, fashion savvy, with an appreciation for the slightly off-beat; meet the Raspberry Rascals – www.raspberryrascals.com.au.

Rasberry Rascals head rascal, Di Lechner, has gathered together some of the finest brands from Australia – Chalk n Cheese, Polka, Tiny Mammoth and Morgan Wills – and the US: Lucy Sykes,  Kit + Lili, Jolie + Jane, Pink Chicken and Monkey Toes, to create a dynamic collection of products that will delight you.

All baby and kids fashion pieces are currently on sale at up to 40% off, but KSF VIPs (that’s you!) get to take a further 10% off already reduced prices, bringing the savings in at up to 50% off. YOWZA! Enter ‘KSF10′ at checkout to redeem this further discount. In addition, when you place an order and join the Raspberry Rascals newsletter, you’ll automatically go into the draw to win a $150.00 Raspberry Rascals Gift Voucher. The 10% discount code ends, and the competition entries close on 10 July 2009, so get in while the getting is good.

As to what to buy, well frankly it’s more of a case of what *not* to buy!

For boys I highly recommend the Kit + Lili tees (whack a long-sleeved tee underneath for winter warmth), the Polka ‘9 Lives Jean’ and ‘Hero’ jumper, and Chalk n Cheese hoodie (cashmere: yum!)

For girls, go for bold sophistication with Kit + Lili ‘Molly’ leggings, ‘Field of Flowers’ top (again, add a long-sleeved tee for winter warmth – remove again when it comes time for the sun to shine again) with the divine Chalk n Cheese Choc Dots coat for warmth. Top (or should I say, toe!) it off with Monkeytoes Mary Janes, a fave of Suri Cruise no less.

For little baby boys and girls you can’t go past the fab selection of block print Kit + Lili rompers and onesies – just stunning!

………………………………………………………………………………………………

I’m just back from Bubble London ‘the kids tradeshow’ where I was lucky enough to meet some fabulous exhibitors – there were over 150 present – and take in the 2010 collections. It was a great atmosphere I’ll be sharing it with you by delivering extensive coverage of the show over the next couple of weeks.

It was fantastic to see an Aussie contingent there.  Some of KidStyleFile’s favourite homegrown brands were present, including Oobi, Rock Your Baby, Littlehorn, Minihaha, Tea Princess and Three Little Trees. Judging by how busy their stands were, it looked like the crowd were impressed – as well they should be!

Stay tuned for detailed coverage, coming soon.
