Meet & Greet Interview: A Moment with Mel and Marzena from Tiny Threads

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Tell us about your background?

Marzena: I’ve been working in fashion for about 12 years, mainly with womenswear retailers in Australia.

Mel: Fashion, fashion and a little bit of food!

Tell us about Tiny Threads and how and why you got started?

Marzena: After having a baby I missed the chaos of working in fashion and wanted to find something that could combine the tw0. Melly had already run a successful clearance business in womenswear, so after both having babies, starting Tiny Threads seemed like a great way to put our combine our skills, work in fashion and get in amongst all the new kids brands we were discovering.

Our first warehouse sale was held in Melbourne and the biggest feedback we got was “when are you coming to….here, there and everywhere” Doing an online store seemed like a great way for people to be able to access our “clearance store” idea without leaving their home and not having to move everything around so much. I’m not even sure how we pulled it off with 9 month olds crawling thru boxes, counting stock till midnight and putting it all together!!

Tell us about your kids and how parenthood changed your life?

Marzena: Nico (pictured below) turned 2 in July and he is just a barrel of fun. Kissy, Cuddly, Cheeky. The most amazing little human being – I still pinch myself and can’t believe he is ours. The biggest change in me has definitely been the way I look at the important stuff and Nico has definitely put things into perspective. I don’t get so wound up anymore, take things as they come. The OCD I had with keeping the house clean has vanished (not that it can be anymore!!). I care more about spending time with Nico than anything else and the rest can wait. Juggling at times can be fun.

Mel: Orlando (pictured below) turned 2 in July too, 3 three weeks after Nico and they are the bestest of buddies. The love that you have for your child is indescribable, it’s the best thing ever being a Mum -  to see your little man grow into his own little personality, that the best. He has taught me to be selfless and that family is so important. My hubby and Orlando are the reason why I can do what I do, they are truly my inspiration.

What inspires you?

Marzena: The talented and creative people we meet doing what we do. We have met some really amazing people who run their fabulous brands by themselves, with kids in tow, being warehouse packers, designers, PR people, sales reps…everything! They are an amazing bunch of people who are really passionate about their brands. Without their support – especially at the start – we would still be just a great idea.

Mel: I agree with Marzena, we have met some incredibly talented Mums… and Dads, of course! I would also say a lot of my dear friends who have their own labels, agencies, restaurants – they are truly amazing people who have taught me that you can really can dream a dream and make it come true.

What’s your idea of a perfect day?

Marzena: Breakfast somewhere with the family, hanging out in the park (sunshine provided, of course), easy lunch together at home, Nico’s nap time means mamma’s nap time too. Get in amongst it in the afternoon…..bike riding, walking, beach, swimming. BBQ dinner or eating out early somewhere? Nico to bed. Chilling out time with hubby. A nice relaxing day…

Mel: Waking up early so we can get the most of the day, pop out for breaky or lunch at some new café or restaurant that my friend Jemma from “Little Eats” has picked for the week. Going for an afternoon drive……. to anywhere?? Chilling out with just the three of us, cuddled up on the couch.

What is your favourite childhood memory?

Marzena: For me it’s definitely holidays with the family. My mum is the eternal tourist and loved finding new and strange places to visit…..all packed in the back of the station wagon and heading to the next Big 4 caravan park! I think we saw most of the BIG tourist attractions that way – th Big Merino, the Big Rocking Horse, the Big Lobster…the list goes on. Cheap and cheery but wouldn’t have done it any other way.

Mel: Living like a gypsy, we moved so many times when I was young. My favourite place was an old homestead on the river Murray; my backyard was our very own private beach. Floating down the river and hanging out with my brother and sister was simply the *best*.
