The unique differences between my children becomes quite apparent when they begin and attempt to sustain a conversation. Both have become quite the little chatterboxes, but where Miss N likes to talk about her latest diary date, what she’ll wear and what she’ll do; Master R is full of “why’s”. “Why are cucumbers colder inside than outside?” “Why don’t we wear checks with stripes together?” and “Why can’t I be 5?” were all asked in the last 30 minutes….with many, many, more to come before bedtime I am sure.

I’m unsure why, but food prepared with obvious love, with little tidbits of happiness inside, make me smile. Some people may think I have too much time on my hands (believe me, it’s certainly not the the case!), but every night before my little boy skips off the preschool, I dedicate a small amount of time to creating a delicious, healthy and visually appealing spread of delights for him to feast on.

My greatest inspiration stems from the Bento boxes, Kyaraben style (キャラ弁),  from Japan where anything can be made into something appealing for the kids: from leftovers, to veggies (including broccoli) to egg. Check out some great Bento Recipe books for kids at the Book Depository online bookstore (global delivery is free!). The Japanese have certainly have preparing lunch down to a fine art!
