What’s in store for earth friendly kid’s products in 2011? If these excellent examples below are any indication, it’s fair to say parents and kids will be enjoying some truly smart and beautiful green design. Enjoy! – Raquel

The Green Guide is published on the second Friday of each month. Read previous ‘The Green Guide’ posts here.

The Green Guide, January 2011: New Year's Baby & Kids {Green} Picks

1. They’re cubes and they’re colourful, but these nifty food jars are infinitely more useful to parents than a Rubix. Designed by Canadian mum Melissa Gunning,  Wean Green 4oz glass cubes come in sets of four featuring durable tempered glass that can go from freezer to microwave, airtight, leakage-proof lock on lids, and measuring lines to help portion food. $25CND per set.

2. Made from heavy duty organic canvas, the Tapikid Play Mat transforms drab floors into fun spaces bustling with roads, trucks, buildings and waterways to explore; perfect for at home or taking along on outings. Created by Deuz, a Parisian graphic design studio run by sisters Charlotte and Marie Findeling, the striking mats are the first release of a series of kid cool creations for 2 to 10 year olds, that will include fabric books, napkins and canvasses. £32.50

3. Heavy on colours at the deep end of the spectrum and rife with good style, A for Apple’s city slick duds totally bury notions of hippy style under an avalanche of edgy, earth friendly pieces. Launched by celebrity fashion stylist Denise Ho, the line funks up newborns to five year olds in biker jackets, buffa vests, pants and more; all made from sophisticated eco friendly materials and organic cottons.

4. Warning: this Yo Yo will self dispose in 90 days! Made by US company Wheatware from surplus wheat, it does what a lot of parents wish their kids toys would: bury it in fertile soil and after three months it completely breaks down without trace – the ultimate way to tidy up. $6.50CND

5. I’ll admit, it’s hard to compete with the awesomeness of a real slimey, wriggly worm but these Earth Worms do a pretty good job, and yes, this is one can of worms mum’ll be happy to open! Made in the US from recycled crayons, each tin contains nine worms: eight coloured and one swirled. $8.95USD

6. For eco fashion that’s out of this world, I’m totally diggin’ Munster’s ‘Galaxy’ recycled microfibre board shorts and the star-tingly snazzy ‘Mayfield’ organic cotton poplin dress in Missie Munster’s fashion orbit; what’s the bet your munster’ll think they’re pretty rad too?!

The Green Guide, January 2011: New Year's Baby & Kids {Green} Picks

7. Big holiday breaks demand big activities to keep the kids busy, especially ones that encourage co-operative play like these terrific pop-up-play scapes from Cleveland toymaker Build A Dream Playhouses. Made from 80% recycled corrugated cardboard, the Snack Stand, Castle and Ice-cream Truck provide huge canvasses for artful enterprise and plenty of inspiration for hours of role play fun. From $54.95USD

8. Doling out snacks to the kids takes on extra meaning with Itzy Ritzy’s limited edition World Hunger Relief Snack Happened sets. Specially designed as part of the World Hunger Relief campaign, the two bag sets are available in Urban Jungle Pink, Urban Jungle Blue and Natural Canvas, with the $20USD purchase price providing meals to children through WFP’s school feeding program.

9. Canadian company Itsus Eco ‘System Green’ has gone all the way in ensuring every aspect of their fair trade garments are chemical free, from certified organic fabrics, inks and threads, hand silkscreened fabric labels to biodegradable wrapping and recycled packaging. Phew! Oh, and did I mention how darn cute the kid’s clothes are? If you happen to fall madly in love with the colourful designs, then double luck, ’cause Itsus have an equally eye pleasing adult range in shades that’ll make you drool.

10. Here’s an organic apple toothless littlies can sink their jaws into. Hand made by a stay at home mum in Murwillumbah, this lovely rattle is made with her original hand block printed organic cotton fabric and attached to natural finish wooden ring. Peas, pears and corn also feature in a scrummy collection of bibs, while crafty mamas can purchase fat quarters of BIRCHseed’s organic fabrics for their own homemade projects. $12-$25

Please check individual sites for postage details and be sure to survey the KidStyleFile All Current Deals page to make sure you’re getting the best possible deal.

Inspired LEGO Storage from Box4Blox

Posted: January 13th, 2011

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Like many others out there, my kidlets love LEGO (it’s Danish for ‘play well’ after all!). They dedicate a good part of the day designing tall buildings and farms for their many lego people. Oh yes, this Danish designed simple block is taking over our lives!  Whilst I love the creativity that arises from simply playing with this toy, I am slowly growing more and more frustrated at the numerous pieces that find themselves scattered around the house and – aghast! – in the wrong toy box.

Enter the Box4Blox – www.box4blox.com, a unique concept thought up by two New Zealand parents, that provides an easy peasy sorting and storage solution to your LEGO induced issues.

Just pop each piece – up to 1,600 of them! – into the top of the Box for Blox and it will sort it into the appropriate strorage tray within for you in no time. The Box 4 Blox is a truly inspired invention not only because it offers a fantastic storage solution, but because it encourages kids to tidy up themselves and turns it into a game – brilliant!

The Box4Blox LEGO storage solution is available from the Box4Blox website for US$65.50 post inclusive. Click here for full shipping information.
