When my nephew had his first allergic reaction to nuts – from someone who had eaten nuts kissing his cheek! – his face blew up in seconds and he was rushed to hospital. From that moment on everything that made its way through our doorway was rigorously scrutinised for traces of nuts and eggs. We purchased a number of allergy free cook books and went about excluding the allergens from our house. It was easy to control what was in our house, but my sister in law found it very difficult when Master A was invited to parties. She would tag along, inspecting food labels, self conscious that she looked like a paranoid mother. He turns 13 this year and I just know that the awesome product I’ve found today will be finding its way into our party stockpile!

Allergy Riders – www.allergyriders.com.au – is a very simple to use food labelling system for parties that removes the whole quandry of negotiating a party buffet. Amy Dowling developed the idea due to her son Ned’s food allergies. “These groovy baking cups and food flags are ideal for party hosts, parents of young allergy sufferers, gluten free bakeries and caterers.” Amy explains, “Each colour alerts guests to food that is nut free, gluten free, dairy free, egg free and so on. In total there are 7 different alerts.” I think this idea is wonderfully innovative!

Allergy Riders baking cups and allergy flags are available directly from their site, with prices starting from $5.95.
