As part of our Christmas coverage this year we are sharing with you our own personal picks for our kids. Today we’re featuring Melody’s picks. You can also read Dom’s picks and Anna’s picks. Enjoy! – Ange

KidStyleFile Personal Christmas Picks 2011: Under Melody’s Christmas Tree
From left to right: Taj 9 months, Judah 4 years, Melody, Marley 2 years

This year’s Christmas is getting more exciting than ever. Each child is that little bit older which means Santa has come alive in our house. My daughter Marley is already planning what to leave out for the ‘rainy-dear’. There are just so many gifts I would love to give them including a few special items and lots of fun things for their Santa sacks.

As you can see the list is growing. I’m super stoked about my newest find, a tie for my son just like his Daddy that I know he’ll love – he is always pretending to go to ‘meetings’. Best yet, it’s only $4.00 – at this price there’s no reason why the list can’t keep growing. Here’s some of what has caught my eye so far:

KidStyleFile Personal Christmas Picks 2011: Under Melody’s Christmas Tree

a. DwellStudio City Stamp Set $34.95 – from Design Child This gorgeous stamp set will not only keep the kids entertained for hours but is sturdy enough to last the distance as it is passed down from child to child.

b. “Classic Red” Racing Car $595.00 – from Monty & Frank’s  What’s not to love about this? So stylish, it’s one toy that will be allowed to stay in our communal living space.

c. An Angel At My Table – Red Tepee – FREE SHIPPING $229.00 – from The Little Kidz Closet This is one of those gifts that all three children will love. I can imagine them playing for hours all manner of make believe games. I love things that allow children to use their imaginations.

d. Little Yoyo Styles – Tie (black/white check) $4.00 – from Stylish Kiddish For my son who idolises his daddy, draws pictures of his dad’s muscles and pretends to go to ‘business’ meetings. Also, what an unbelievable price.

e. Little Yoyo Styles – Fedora Hat – Black/White Small Check $20.00 – from Stylish Kiddish There is something so cool about fedora hats – especially on little boys.

f. For Walls The Birdhouse $39.95 – from Bubba Funk Because little girls love beautiful things. Marley will spend hours chatting to the pretty birdies on her wall.

g. Baby Blanket – Peach Owl by Minti Baby Blue $49.00 – from About a Boy  A great comforting gift for my 9 month old.

h. Oobi – Darcy Pettiskirt – Icy Blue Tulle $73.95 – from Design Child  Every little girl wants to be a princess and this Oobi skirt delivers a double dose of girly without being pink. Love it!

i. Missi Missi Jumbo Red Bean Bag with White Stars $139.95 – from Bubba Funk  Another stylish item that will be allowed in the living room for the little man to lounge out in after school.

j. Ada Ada Wings $66.00 – from Little Pinwheel  I love the sparkle and soft padding of these wings. So adorable with any outfit where flying is involved.

k. Interactive 3 Dimensional Play Rug – Dollhouse $189.00 – from Metro Mum  Like an ordinary dollhouse but comfy and practical!

Please check individual stores for shipping costs. Also make sure you read the KidStyleFile All Current Deals page to be sure you’re getting the best deal.

Christmas 2011: Top 10 Best Advent Calendars

Posted: November 23rd, 2011

………………………………………………………………..

When I was a girl, Advent Calendars were a very big deal. I remember the excitement of a new door being opened each day and the extreme squeals if and when a chocolate might drop out. My sisters and I were pretty thrilled with a new picture never mind a sweet treat. Never would we have dreamed of the calendars now on offer to our kids.

For my children, I’m a big fan of reusable calendars that can be customised to suit a family’s beliefs and traditions. Rather than filling mouths with sugar I like to create family activity cards, combined with a few new decorations for the tree and a tiny surprise or two. Writing Santa’s letter, decorating the house, baking gingerbread, sharing an old Christmas movie; these are all time old favourites that can be chosen each day, ready to share and be relished at this special time of year. What can I say? I’m a sucker for nostalgia!

One of my favourite calendars of the year though is not a reusable one, but a version made with parents in mind. I don’t know about you but these evenings I relish a nice cup of tea over a glass of wine. To have a special box of brew with little surprises attached sounds like a gorgeous treat for busy Mums or Dads to enjoy and help keep track of the impending visit. Enjoy!

Well, our friends at Where Did You Get That? – www.wheredidyougetthat.com.au – are inviting you to take part in the 2011 Inaugural ‘Where Did You Get That? Gingerbread House Competition & Display’. If you are an Adelaide Hills or Metro local you can enter into the Lobethal competition which is being held during the Lights of Lobethal Festival.  Alternatively, you can enter Australia wide through the Where Did You Get That? Facebook competition.  All you have to do is: decorate your Gingerbread House, take a picture page and upload your picture to the competition page. No time to bake? No problem, Where Did You Get That? have organised Pre-baked Gingerbread House Kits, baked to order, by Adelaide Hills favourite – Emmaline’s Country Kitchen; order yours online here. There are several categories being judged including two junior categories and an open category; winners will receive a Where Did You Get That? voucher and all prize details, rules and regulations are available on their website. If you are looking for some inspiration then see a gingerbread house being made using one of the kits online here.

If the cost of Christmas has you a little overwhelmed, perhaps start by checking out the range of affordable gifts in the Where Did You Get That? Stocking Stuffer category. Keep your little ones busy with a host of art and craft activities these coming holidays by popping one of the Djeco art and craft products in their stockings. Or perhaps this pack of 1000 stickers; they come presented in a hard flip out folder with 18 sheets of stickers - that should give you time to enjoy a cup of tea! Still in need of gift inspiration? For girls you cannot go past the Roos Dress Your Doll range. The Haute Couture Box and the Fitting Cubicle have both been marked down in time for Christmas, so now is the perfect time to encourage your child’s inner fashionista.  For boys I think the Autoblox Hot Rod in Red will be much loved (you might have to pry this one from daddy’s hands though).

Do you have a baby or young toddler in your house?  Then I have a suggestion for you: how about a new pair of teeny tiny shoes in his or her stocking this Christmas?  Last Christmas my youngest son had just started walking, and he was so chuffed to have a new pair of sandals to toddle around in.  It was such a successful gift that this year I am thinking I might get little pairs of shoes for my baby niece and God-daughter, aged seven and nine months respectively.

As we all know, the place to go for little shoes is Tiny Steps – www.tinysteps.com.au – where proprietor Fiona searches far and wide to bring us the best in shoes for children aged 0-2.  She has collected a big range of shoes for all seasons from brands including Pediped, Livie & Luca, Saltwater Sandals, Chillikids, BLOCH, Skeanie, Rileyroos, Old Soles, ScruffyDog and Shooshoos.  Plus, as a mum of boys, I can definitely give props to Fiona for her boys’ shoes range – it can be really hard to find cute sandals and shoes for little boys, but she has a great range here.

Take advantage of the new season styles and colours at Tiny Steps with 20% off storewide!  This offer is valid using the code KSFsale20 until 4 December 2011, and you can use it on anything in the store – new stock and sale stock alike!  And speaking of sale stock, do go through the Sale Section where you’ll find up to 50% off – and that’s *before* your extra 20% discount is applied!

For my niece I’m thinking the Bloch Ballerina Argento slip-ons in silver might be the way to go, and my God-daughter would look adorable in the Rileyroos Maryjane in Fuchsia.  And I’ll tell you what, I think Scruffy Dog win my ‘cutest boy’s sandal of the summer’ award in a two-way tie between the Joey in Red and the Buddy in Black - simply gorgeous.
