Our eldest has taken to requesting the ‘craft box’ at the weekends, which of course I’m totally excited about. Anything that will encourage him to draw and explore creatively is like a dream come true. I’ve noticed lately how so many illustrators embrace their childhoods and create a style that is simplistic and gentle, appealing to young and old alike with their naivety and simple details.

One such artist is Melbourne illustrator Simone Downey from Nomuu – www.shop.nomuu.com - and I’m really in love with the characters she creates. Pensive, perhaps a little awkward, just like a shy little child, these little people morph into whimsical woodland animals placed among simple leaves and trees. Available as art prints or delightful greeting cards, the collection is super affordable and sure to win hearts. What is equally as interesting though is that she only came to illustration late, her fear of failure with her artistic abilities winning her over time and time again. Once she finally overcame self criticism, she gave herself the freedom to enjoy creating art once more. Such a valuable lesson for us all I think, and a great one to teach our kids!

Simone also curates Ammiki, an online collection of  inspiring images and sites from handmade, collaborative independent artists, designers and small businesses from around the world. This website is a wonderful resource celebrating all things handmade, hand-loved and handsome.

Nomuu despatches within 2-7 days and currently takes Paypal payments. An A4 artworks start at an unbelievable $16.00.
