We have a fabulous gallery here in Hobart that celebrates local indie craft. I’m lucky enough to have a few pieces in there alongside one of my crafty heroes, the lovely Cat – www.catrabbit.com.au. No, not a friendly feline, rather an exceptionally talented young lady and lover of anthropomorphism. Of what? I hear you say, well please, let me explain.

Cat Rabbit, originally from Tasmania, is well known both in Australian and international indie craft circles for her incredibly detailed plush toys and adorable accessories (handkerchief anyone?) that cleverly combine human attributes with animal characteristics – otherwise known as anthropormophism! (Try teaching that one to the kids). Each toy is painstakingly handmade and has a very clear personality of its own, be it Peace Warrior Rabbit or his Folksy Nerd cousin. Whether they sit on your bookshelf or play bedside guardian, no home will ever be the same when a Cat Rabbit creation comes to stay. I have my eye on one each for my boys as well as for my nephew – a true heirloom that would be treasured forever.

This year Cat has teamed up with Melbourne based animator Isobel Knowles to launch their first picture book Owl Know How. A story about solving problems –  big problems that can only be solved by owls –  get ready to enter the magical world of Cloud Town and meet Cornelia Rabbit and her best-friend Orvi. With help from their friends they save the town from falling into the treetops by working together and using ‘owl know how’. Everything was created out of felt, cardboard and various other recycled materials and so encourages curiously whimsical creative play for children, parents and teachers.

Cat Rabbit’s plush toys are made to order and start at $90 plus delivery. Owl Know How, due on April 1st will be $24.95 and is published by Thames and Hudson.
