My friends are always surprised at how well behaved my children are on our travels. We have survived 6 hour flights to the top end without a tantrum, waited in super long queues in tourist traps without complaint, and walked and walked and walked only to find ourselves at our original starting point without them giving up. Our secret? We include our kidlets in much of our decision making on our trips.

With an overseas holiday next up on our agenda, I was delighted to find the latest Lonely Planet travel guides for children. The ‘Not for Parents: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know’ collection delves into all the exciting things kidlets would like to know about Paris, New York, London and Rome. There are no accommodation options, cafe recommendations or boring list of art galleries though. These books are all about the adventures that have occurred within these cities, hidden secret tunnels, hideous histories, and other cool stuff about each city. With such suggestions at their fingertips, I’m certain my kidlets will come up with all types of adventures when we land in New York – including visiting the skyscraper that was meant to double as an airship dock (do you know which one I mean?).

The larger Not for Parents – The Travel Book features a bundle of cool facts about every single country (roughly 200 of them) in the world, with each country getting a whole page to itself. It’s fascinating stuff, and even though its says ‘not for parents’ I’m pretty sure you’ll find it difficult not to peek. Parents can also snap up a free e-book for extra coverage.

Currently priced at $14.80 for the each of the four city focused books, and $22.14 for the larger book, you can find them over at Book Depository where you will get them for 10% less with the special discount code APMA12 – you have until midnight 13 May 2012 to redeem this offer.
