My husband has a shirt hanging in his cupboard which will always be his favourite. He wore it at the birth of our first born almost six years ago, and then again two years later when our daughter arrived. It holds a lot of sentimental value, and although he doesn’t wear it much these days, possibly out of fear of staining it, he cannot part with it. Sometimes, when I spot it as I put laundry away, I wonder how we could somehow preserve it in a meaningful way…

NYC based Kindred – www.kindredcloth.com –  have come up with quite an inventive way of doing just that. Simone (who, amongst others, worked on collections for Vivienne Westwood) and Heike (who worked on environmental protection projects in Germany) are a fantastic pairing, and put their combined experience and natural creativity together to create re-purposed garments for children from your cherished clothing. They hold the firm belief “that garments symbolize the spirit and style of the people who wear them” and somehow capture this when they change the item’s energy into something fitting for a child.

If you like the concept, you can organise a custom order directly through Kindred. You can either utilise your own special garment or fabric which you forward to them, or select from their collection of vintage, designer and organic textiles. Orders take around 4 weeks to create, andd whilst the process is not cheap at around $175.00, the opportunity to own a custom outfit that will be passed on from generation to generation is priceless.
