KidStyleFile Interview: 5 Minutes With... Kristy Withers from Incy Interiors

Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to the face behind the Incy Interiors name, Kristy Withers. Kristy’s warm personality and dynamic creativity is evident in her babies and children’s furniture and decor collection – a stunning new breed of cots, beds, chairs, change tables, bookcases, side tables, table and chair sets and artwork.

Kristy, 32, lives with her husband Simon, 34, and their two children Oscar, 4 years, and Polly, 8 months, on a 250 acre property in country Victoria, Australia.

What was your life before children like?

I worked for eBay running their ad and marketing teams. We lived in the city. Life was super fast-paced and super exciting, no doubt about it, but I’ve welcomed the change of pace and lifestyle that moving to the country and having children has brought.

What led you to children’s furniture design?

Not being able to find the kind of furniture I wanted for Oscar’s room was the catalyst. After talking to other parents I discovered I was not alone! I’ve really enjoyed putting together collections based on different aesthetics. Our ranges – Driftwood, French Provincial, Pannelled and Metal – are quite different from each other, but all share the same high quality and allow parents to put together a complete look with ease.

What inspires your work?

Anything and everything! The Smeg range of retro fridges inspired the gelato colours in our Metal Bed collection. I had a huge yellow obsession when I was pregnant with Polly – our Rocking Egg Chair in yellow was inspired by that. Customer feedback also drives what we do – when enough customers tell us they want something we have to make it! Pinterest is also a source of inspiration – it offers such a diverse range of aesthetics and I’m completely enthralled by it.

I love the way you’ve decorated your children’s rooms, can you tell me a bit about how you came up with their looks?

Moving to the country provided a great opportunity to start from scratch, which was fun. A wooden London bus that I bought for Oscar on my first work trip to London after returning from maternity leave was the inspiration for Oscar’s room. I combined the ‘English’ feel with sentimental retro pieces including his grandfather’s train set, my Sesame Street encyclopedias, his father’s toy digger and an Incy ‘Oscar’ bed!

We struggled to fall pregnant with Polly. I had two miscarriages between Oscar and conceiving her. Being pregnant with Polly was such a miracle that I wanted to celebrate by creating the most beautiful space for her as I could. I started designing her room in my head the second I found out I was pregnant. I knew I wanted to use the Jemima Cot and Scarlet change table (from the Incy Interiors French Provincial range) in her room. Demand for these was so high from customer orders that we couldn’t secure one for ourselves until Polly was 2 months old!

What’s the future for Incy Interiors?

We’ll be expanding our furniture ranges and we have new cots and bed designs out in October this year. The big news is that, thanks to customer feedback, we have developed our Metal Bed range into grown-up sizes! We’ve had so many requests for these we couldn’t not do it!  In addition to the big additions we’ve also got smaller, but important additions, that customers have been requesting like trundles for all our beds and side rails for the smaller sleepers. We’ve also had international interest in our products, which is very exciting, so Incy is going global!!! It’s a wild ride, but we love it. In the beginning and at the end it’s all about fun, and we’re so glad we’re meeting our mission.
