I don’t know about your house, but bath time is always a rather raucous affair here. The boys like to ‘practise’ their swimming skills in the tub, and while that’s great fun for them, it’s a major drying up effort for you know who. The only thing that seems to get them in to their pyjamas is the lure of a good bedtime story.
The perfect story for high jinx kids has to be Emma Quay’s Rudie Nudie. This book I can relate to for its cheeky monkeys wriggling and writhing, still giddy from their day, despite the attempted ‘calm down’ efforts from us poor parents! Written in a lovely lyrical tone and illustrated in soft sketchy pastels, it’s no wonder it was recently awarded with the ABIA’s ‘Best Picture Book Of The Year’ category for younger children.
If you like the look of Rudie Nudie then check out Emma’s other books, including Shrieking Violet, a vibrant story about a little sister with a big voice. Another firm favourite in our house is Bear and Chook. Our youngest is particularly keen on this one and was hopelessly devastated when it was time for it to go back to the library. Co-written by Lisa Shanahan, this simple tale of friendship is as endearing now as it was when originally released almost 10 years ago. Don’t miss Emma’s gorgeous illustrations in some of Andrew Daddo’s books too.
