We’re dropping by again to chat with Cate McQuillen the creator of dirtgirlworld. It’s a special time of year for her at the moment….
Hi there . It sure is! If you are reading this on June the 5th… Happy world environment day! If not , well not to worry…everyday is world environment day, so I hope you are having a happy one.
What are you up to for world environment day?
Well the aim is to spend us much time outside as I can. I’m planning some time chilling out on a nature walkabout and then some time in the garden getting as much dirt as I can under my fingernails. We are also sharing a video about carbon offsetting that we created with the gang from the Sydney Opera House earlier this year, when we produced the Get Grubby musical. The video has gone a bit viral with shares by the UN and the World Bank – that was a bit unexpected but awesome! If you want to get your head around offsetting and why we think entertainment shouldn’t cost the earth …you can check out dirtgirl , scrapboy and Costa the garden gnome and a whole heap of black balloons herein the video below!
What’s new in the world of dirt at dirtgirlworld?
It’s very grubby in dirtgirlworld right now! We have just finished filming 10 new fabisodes about composting for our latest project Compost ROcks!
Hang on , what’s a fabisode?
It’s a new term that dirtgirl has made up because she reckons these new webisodes and fabulous. Fabulous webisodes is such a mouthful to say, so Fabisodes were born!
Oh…what’s a webisode?
A webisode is an episode of a story or a doco or a film that is screend online..on the world wide web.
Great, I’m glad we cleared that up. Ummm, what’s Compost ROcks?
We’ve teamed up with the EPA in NSW to let everyone know about Recycled Organics and before you ask about that, I’ll let you know that it’s about the stuff you put in your green bin outside your house ( your Organic waste) that is collected by the council and then processed into mighty good compost ( that’s the Recycled bit)…turning our spoils into soils. It’s something we can be very proud of…diverting from landfill our kitchen scraps and garden waste and keeping their goodies and nutrients in the soil and food cycle as compost rather than transforming them into the posionous methane and leachate that happens if we dump them in landfill. But don’t just belive me …we have a website chock full of info , ideas and tips….head to www.compostrocks.com.au
Can you see the Fabisodes there?
Yes you can! And you can can sign up to Costa’s Compost Academy and get updates and more fabisodes and enter cool competitions with cool prizes and enjoy all round community mayhem and hijinks all about compost.
Have you got some behind the scenes sneak peeks or never seen before photos just for us?
I certainly do! We had enormous fun creating these stories. plenty of filming here in dirtgirlworld on location in the paddock…we have added a new set …scrapboy’s workshop! It’s a boys and girl’s own delight…lots of tin, wheels, sprockets, hammers and screwdrivers. there’s a satellite dish and pedal powered scraperscope that connects home base with Costa the gnoming reporter! That scrapboy is a true eco innovator.
We also hit the road and filmed on location at the Clarence Valley landfill, where we got the lowdown on kerbisde collection and just how compost is made from the stuff in our green bins. Costa the garden gnome picked up a bit of work experience driving the rubbish truck and dirtgirl and scrapboy got a bit scientific and up close and personal with some heavy machinery.
