Kids in America: The Best US Kidswear Labels & Where to Get Them

Posted: July 26th, 2008

Post written by Miki
………………………………………………………………………………………………………

This week I’m having a look around at some of the best US designers in the boutique kidswear market - and of course, where to find them.

The great thing about the current high Aussie dollar against the US dollar is that many Australian retailers have been able to offer their US lines at lower prices - so make the most of it while it lasts!

One word of advice though - US sizes are a bit different from Australian sizes, and tend to run a bit smaller. So if in any doubt always go a size up when choosing.

Itty Bitty Yuppy

Itty Bitty Yuppy - www.ittybittyyuppy.com.au - have a big selection of gorgeous US designers’ lines. Abe Jones is a great one, with a range of tees and some adorable vintage-inspired dresses with sophisticated fabrics. There’s also Eight3One with the cutest little print onesies and tees for the little ones, and Pink Chicken (stunning New York based line) with fabulous prints and frills for little girls. There’s loads of choice for boys too, with Knuckleheads, Wonderboy and Tin Tank.

IBY are having a huge clearout sale at the moment, with prices on selected items discounted by up to 75%! Yes, it’s a great time to shop!

Bubbafunk

Bubbafunk - www.bubbafunk.com.au - carry two beautiful US-based lines for tiny people. The first is Egg Baby by Susan Lazar, the first post of call for for exquisite hats and booties, plus some really lovely rompers. These are special pieces for special babies and make such wonderful gifts.

Then second is Quilt Baby, who deliver a colourful and contemporary take on some great basics, like bodysuits, wraps and bibs - just gorgeous!

Check out Bubba Funk’s huge clearance sale currently on for some great bargains.

Chic Kids

One of my favourite organics ranges can be found at Chic Kids - www.chickids.com.au - and that is Sckoon Organics. Based out of Soho in New York, Sckoon Organic products are beautifully soft and comfortable for tiny tots, and look great too!

Chic Kids also stock two fab t-shirt lines, verymeri and yoli-poli, both of which are popular with celebrities’ kids - and when you see how gorgeous they are you’ll understand why!

Check out Chic Kids’ sale items, and join the Chic Kids loyalty club for an extra 10% discount off marked prices: nice!

Show and Tell: Putting my money where my mouth is

One of the occupational hazards of KidStyleFile is that I find myself in temptation’s way all too often: so much cool stuff at such great discounts - how could I not buy at least some of it?

My poor old credit card has taken a hammering over the last few months, but you know what? I don’t regret a single one of my purchases so far.

Because I think that’s a pretty solid endorsement of what I’ve bought, I thought I’d showcase some of my favourites today. (I’ve taken my own photos for this, so I apologise for the slightly dodgy photos; hopefully you’ll get the idea at least ;) )

Threads
I love little boys’ clothes. My son Alex (aged nearly one) has a fairly extensive wardrobe, but we do have a few favourites.

I know I rave on about these at every chance I get, but the American Apparel baby rib karate pants are revered in this household. Comfy, stretchy and still really cool looking, he wears them… well, most days actually, now that I think about it!

I always get ours from Frock You - www.frockyou.com.au - because Kat stocks such a great range of sizes and colours and has such kick-ass sales. There’s also the My Child magazine discount code*(see bottom of page) which gives you 20% off storewide!

I’ve bought a few tops from Frock You too - currently Alex is wearing Smirk tees (I love the Smirk designs, it’s my absolute favourite kids tee brand) and Ej Sikke Lej too.

The other favourite top du jour is his Oobi ‘Bella the Martian’ hoodie, which I bought from Fairy Kisses - www.fairykisses.com.au.

Fairy Kisses have a brilliant price on this one at the moment, check it out! The other great thing about this hoodie is that Angela gave Alex the matching Oobi Timorous Beastie: too cute!

Clothes

Kindy Kamper

The Kindy Kamper - from www.kindykamper.com.au - was another present from Angela (yes, she spoils us rotten). Even though it’s marketed at pre-schoolers it’s actually really great for babies too because it fits into portacots so nicely!

We do a lot of travelling to see our respective families and having the Kindy Kamper has made bedding for Alex a breeze. I just grab the KK and the portacot and that’s it - nothing else needed! The little loops on the bottom of the KK padded base fit over the portacot matress perfectly (they’re adjustable for different sizes of matress too) and the padding in the KK base makes the portacot matress softer too. I can tuck Alex in just like normal, so he’s happy and comfy.

Once we’re home again it’s just as easy. The KK gets flung in the washing machine, then it dries just as well either on the line or in the dryer, and then it’s ready to go all over again.

It’s also Alex’s cot bedding at daycare - no more lost sheets or having to sew name tags on to about eight different items, as the KK covers it all. Couldn’t be easier.

Here’s a photo of the KK set up in my portacot (which is a Phil & Teds T2), and with Alex in it. Please excuse the rather, erm, ‘vibrant’ playroom floor in the background!Kindy Kamper

Bags

My ISOKI petite traveller (from Ekidna Kids - www.ekidnakids.com.au) goes everywhere with me these days, whether I have Alex with me or not. It’s small enough to be easy for me to take around (not much bigger than a clutch really) but big enough to fit everything a mum could need when she’s out running errands.

I’ve just emptied mine out on the desk, and this is what I fit in it:

Two disposable nappies, a travel pack of nappy wipes, a few nappy sacks, a twin-pack of teething rusks, a little box of sultanas, a muesli bar, a bib, my mobile phone, some cash (sadly not very much), a notebook and pen, my keys and all the cards I use on a daily basis - credit card, EFTPOS card, library card etc. And I still have plenty of room for a bottle and my sunglasses etc.

It’s amazing how much fits into such a little bag!

ISOKI petite traveller

Another favourite in my nappy bag collection is my Vanchi Carry All Nappy Bag in choc tudor.

The best price I’ve seen on these is at La Toriana when you use the My Child magazine discount code*(see bottom of page) to take 15% off AND get a free gift.

It’s had a hard life, my Vanchi, but I have to say that it’s so well made that it’s taken all the abuse I’ve thrown at it and not batted an eyelash. Once I brushed the smooshed biscuit off it I realised that it actually still looks like new! I love this nappy bag precisely because it doesn’t look like a nappy bag - perfect!

Vanchi carry all

The other bag that really deserves a mention is the Fleurville kids messenger bag, which hails from from Itty Bitty Yuppy - www.ittybittyyuppy.com.au.

Things I love about this bag (besides its obviously gorgeous looks) are its size; small enough that a pre-schooler can carry it, but big enough that I don’t look silly carrying it either, and the unique PVC-free fabric it’s made from. It feels great (really soft but tough) and it’s such good quality.

It also came with an insulated lunch bag which is very handy for being out and about. This is the bag that goes to daycare with Alex as it fits everything he needs for the day: lunch, nappies, change of clothes, bottle etc. etc.

“Coolies”, as Kat says.

You can say that again, Kat!!

Cool tees, a whole boatload of them! Dress them up, or down, tees are an all-season easy to wear winner.

Layer them and accessorise them with armwarmers (the Moppit arm/legwarmers come in a range of sizes and are extremely groovy, and for you BabyLegs fans, the current 35% off discount brings them down to a cheap-as-chips $10.72!!), and scarfs for winter warmth.

I love the new and exclusive cute Amy Tangerine tees imported directly from the USA by Frock You, and if you want instant street cred, head straight for the new Gabrial Saynte Tees.

The Gabrial Saynte Free badge and “Baby’s First Mixed Tape”CD offer is still running too, which makes it the perfect time to snap up a bragain, and also get yourself a little Gift With Purchase action ;) The CD contains tunes from the cream of the cool old-skool crowd (David Bowie, Michael Jackson, U2!!) to help kick start your child’s musical education. How cool is that? Personally, I think the BLs worn as arm warmers with the Tees is a stellar look :} Jump straight to the Gabrial Saynte product page.

New Moppit (love their blues: does good things to my brain) and Smelly Welly (their tie-tee with sewn one button detailing is soemthing quite special for the little boys in the crowd) have also just hit the decks at Frock You. And I keep on hearing about the virtues of the American Apparel Baby Rib Karate Pants: available in black, pink, red, navy and lavendar, they are the perfect solution for the lower half in combination with any of these tees.

To All the Clothes I Loved Before…

Just had to revisit some of my faves at Frock You. The clothes are still as superlative as before, but the bottom has dropped out of the prices, so if you’ve been lurking, waiting for this moment, don’t be pipped at the post: jump now!

If you are looking for something a little different, head for Ej Sikke Lej; simply the most delightful Scandinavian label. Their fairy-land prints of toadstools and birds are just the thing to get your child’s imagination going, and the Strawberry Skirt’s cred is confirmed in the current edition of uber-cool LMNOP magazine.

On the local front, Moppit is a great Aussie label that gets the balance right every time. I love their ‘Apple’ onesie; it just radiates the essence of a happy baby. The Nigella Hoodie for boys or girls is effortlessly cool, and the Trina Owl Dress is perfect winter style for girls.

KSF Weekend Special Feature: Gorgeous Girlswear Part 2: 4-7 years

Posted: June 21st, 2008

Today, Miki brings us part two of her special feature on clothing for little girls. See last week’s post for Part 1: Newborn to Three Years

Next week: OobiWatch roundup - Woo!

………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Well, the weekend has rolled around once more, so it’s time to relax, put your feet up and get your credit card out. That’s right: today I bring you girlswear part two, gorgeous, groovalicious gear for girls aged four to seven.

Buckets & Spades

To get the ball rolling, let’s take a look at the MASSIVE sale section, with up to 50% off, at Buckets & Spades www.bucketsandspades.com.au.

I had great trouble singling out items to showcase here, because there’s just too much cool stuff to want to whittle it down at all!

That sale section is HUGE, it’s MASSIVE I tell you! There’s every designer you can possibly think of in there - Fred Bare, Diesel, Guess, Gumboots, Two Belles, Tommy Rocket, Eeni Meeni Miini Moh, BIG by Fiona Scanlan and so on.

You’ll have to dig through the 53 pages of winter specials (that’s not including the summer specials section) yourself to find out who else is in there. Now there’s a challenge for you ;)

So what I’ve done here, just because I was so overwhelmed by all the choice, is just to pick out my favourites of the winter coats. It’s that time of year when everyone wants to be rugging up, and there’s no more stylish way to do it than with one of these pieces of gorgeousness below:

Buckets & Spades images
