Splish, Splosh, Splash! Rainy Day Gear to Turn Your Grey Sky Blue

Posted: April 17th, 2009

Today’s post written by Kat

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Today it rained -bucketed down. And my two-year-old could not have been happier!

In a brief respite, we threw on our wellies and jumped joyously in puddles in the driveway. If you haven’t tried it lately, I highly recommend it!

If you don’t have a hot bath to jump into after your aquatic adventrues, check out these stylish (and splashproof) options:

Gumboots:

Available in a plethora of colours and prints, these options make sure your wellies are anything but boring! Puddle Beach have a bright and cheerful range of boots from several brands, including Western Chief’s Ladybug and Camoflauge ($41.80ea), which offer cotton lining, handles to make putting them on so much easier for litle people, and non-slip soles, which is always handy.

They also have a more basic, but equally as cute, range, with designs such as Aeroplane and Worm ($36ea, currently on sale for $29) sure to delight kids of all ages, as well as your purse!

Hunter Wellington Boots are just about the creme de la creme of the gumboot world. Originally designed for traipsing through the Scottish Highlands, they’ve been in production since 1856 and therefore really know their stuff (and the website reassuringly informs us their boot-making technology has since been updated). They do a kid’s range in simple colours that will set you back $70 a pair, but they are so jam-packed with every orthopaedic advantage, it’s definitely where I’d put my dollars..if I wasn’t so attracted to polka dots and sparkly bits…

..and stripes, like this adorable pair by Morgan & Milo, available at Tiny People, for $60. Or the gorgeous Rasperry Birds print on these Ouch wellies from the Hip Infant ($26.95). So many choices, I almost wish winter was a bit longer (almost)!

Raincoats:

I used to have a sensible bright yellow raincoat that folded neatly into a little square, in it’s own pouch in my schoolbag. Man, it sucked. Thankfully, when my daughter starts school she can have her cherry-pickin’ choice of all that is bright and beautiful -

ShopHouse have a handy wet weather section which includes a nice range of Penny Scallan raincoats. The Navy Star print ($44.95) is subtle yet cool, or for a pretty pattern to brighten up your day try the sweet Daisy print ($44.95).

You could also head back to Puddle Beach for a coat to match your wellies – the Ladybug and Pink Kitty($64.35ea) by Western Chief are perfect for little girls, while the blue Dino coat for boys ($64.35) is just too cute to resist!

Got a little monster? Kit him out appropriately with this cool Monster raincoat ($49.95) from Moochie-moo!

Umbrellas:

There are oodles of umbrellas out there, so let your imagination (and your mouse) run wild!

That said, you might not have to look much further than Kinder Kaboodle, who also have a nifty section devoted to rainy days. Their umbrella pages are just glorious! My picks are the Rush Strawberry Flower and Green Dino brollies, or Penny Scallan’s Star and Spot designs (all $19.95ea).

Wrigglebots have a great range of Kidorable wet weather gear, including the very sweet Butterfly and Lotus umbrellas for girls, and this very cool Pirate for boys (all $18ea)!

I also found a whole shop devoted to brollies (so Mum can grab herself a funky new one as well!), StellaBrella where they not only stock gorgeous prints for kids (like Butterfly and Frogs, $19.95) but uber chic clear options with coloured trims (I love the yellow, despite my prior negative association) – oh la la!

The KSF Great Easter Gift Guide: Toys to Love

Posted: March 31st, 2009

Today’s post written by Miki

………………………………………………………………………………………………

Easter is a joyous time of year. Its significance changes from family to family, but whether it be your annual reason to attend church or mass, to go on the hunt for your area’s best hot cross buns, or painstakingly bake your own – my neighbour does this which impresses me more than I can say! – to have a family gathering, to go on holiday, or to eat your body weight in chocolate, Easter is a special time.

Children at Easter time are often the recipients of gifts, and although these have often consisted of chocolate in the past, trends are changing.  More and more parents want to make Easter special for their kids without having to put up with the little ones’ huge sugar-fueled tantrums or clean up chocolate vomit!  And so the hunt for clever, stylish, non-edible Easter gifts begins.

Below is a small selection of my favourites for little people. A couple of stores that deserve special mentions are Happy Little Hippos, who have a wonderful Easter Gift section to make your life easy, and ShopHouse who have a generous 25% off a selection of Cocoon Couture beanbags – the designs which feature bunnies, naturally ;)

Stay tuned for more great Easter ideas, coming every day this week – from fashion to gifts, to craft, we’ve got Easter covered!

New ‘Charlie and Lola’ & Super Hot Sale at Kinder Kaboodle: 15% off Store-Wide with Shop 4 Kids KSF Code

Posted: February 27th, 2009

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Kinder Kaboodle – www.kinderkaboodle.com.au – is certainly *the* place to visit for all your creche/pre-school/Kindy/Nan’s place needs, with a HUGE range of backpack, lunchboxes, drink bottles, hats, smocks, sun and rain gear, and other supplies, but did you also know that Bernice at Kinder K has you covered while you’re at home too?

There’s a lovely range of  games, activity sets, toys and accessories that will have you well sorted on stay-at-home, and stay-indoors, days.

Bernice has just received a new shipment of fab new Charlie and Lola merchandise that will have your kids calling “Mummm…pleeeeeeease can I have the Make and Play Jungle Playset??!” (or is that my voice? Moving right along….)

While branded merch is something which doesn’t usually get my pulse racing, I do really enjoy the Charlie and Lola. The books, and cleverly crafted DVDs both have artistic merit (Lauren Child is an accomplished artist and designer, inspired by children’s illustrator Quentin Blake, and here’s a piece of info to grow your Trivial Pursuit knowledge: she previously worked as an artist’s assistant to British creator Damien Hirst). Child’s stories are both joyfully happy and educational, and inspire infectious giggles, so fill your cart without the cringe factor!

Kinder K also now stocks a small range of themed nesting stacking boxes, including the Little Golden Books variety, which feature a selection of my fave LGB characters including The Poky Little Pupple and The Saggy Baggy Elephant, amongst others. These make a very cool decor piece before coming into their own as one of the most well-used toys you will ever own: my girls have used their boxes from 6 months old, and are STILL using them for various purposes.

For rainy days to come, check out the large range of cooking attire and accessories at Kinder Kaboodle. The Mini Rhurbab sets win the day for me.

As always, be sure to check out the Kinder Kaboodle Sale section for a nice selection of goodies going cheap.

Until midnight Tuesday 3 March, 2009, you can take 15% off store-wide (including sale items) by using the Shop4Kids discount code. Find the code in the latest Shop4Kids magazine, and also in the KidStyleFile Deals & Steals newsletter, out every Tuesday.

School’s In: Check the Coolest Library Bags in the Playground

Posted: February 12th, 2009

Today’s post written by Miki

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Well, school’s well and truly in around the country now, but as the kiddlies start bringing home library books, artwork and more, you never know when you might just “need” a cool new update, or replacement item.

These beautiful, reusable and environmentally sustainable library bag options are just the thing if you’re in the market – so much better that lugging the books around in last week’s plastic bag from Woollies – check them out!

Kiddysac make fabulous library/swim bags in two sizes (large and medium), which feature drawstring tops and adjustable backpack straps.  There’s a huge range of bold colours with striking designs, making them ideal for young kids to remember which bag is theirs (“It’s the blue one with ballet shoes on it”).

You can buy Kiddysac bags at the following stores: Kinder Kaboodle, Little Explorers, and Pastel Pink.

Next let’s look at Envirosax.  Lightweight and small enough to be wadded up into a pocket when not in use, Envirosax are like environmentally friendly, reusable shopping bags.  They’re a great size for library books, especially picture books, and they’re cheap as chips!

You can find a superb range of  Envirosax bags at Pastel Pink.

Now we have Cocoon Couture, my personal favourite.  Featuring beautiful striped fabric and appliqued animal designs, these bags are quirky and totally adorable.  If you buy one of these bags you’ll want to keep it for yourself, rather than handing it over for the kids to use!

Get your Cocoon Couture bags from Urban Child, ShopHouse, Pastel Pink, Kinder Kaboodle and 5 Little Monkeys.

And may I just remind you to always check the KidStyleFile ‘All Current Deals’ page before making a purchase, just to make sure you’re getting yourself the best possible deal? ;)

Here are some of the cool library bags on offer:

Get The Kids Ready For Kinder And School At Kinder Kaboodle: Loads Of Hot New Stock, 10% disc store-wide

Posted: January 5th, 2009

Today’s post written by Miki

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

There’s loads of new stock in store at Kinder Kaboodle – www.kinderkaboodle.com.au – so if you’re looking at getting the kids ready to head back to childcare, pre-school, kinder or school (if you’re smart you are!) then head on over to check out the new goodies.

Now for those of you whose child is starting pre-school, kinder or even primary school this year, there are a few essentials you’ll need.

The first is a decent backpack, one which is large enough to hold lunch, art projects and picture books, a change of clothes etc, yet small enough for a school-aged child to carry on his or her own. Personally I find it hard to go past the Rush backpacks which are available in a fabulous range of designs, but Tiger Tribe, Mini Rhubarb and Fleurville are also very good options.  You can’t really go wrong with any of the backpacks in this category though!

The next thing you’ll need is a drink bottle.  Look for distinctive designs which will be easily described to a teacher when it’s inevitably gone missing – Alex & Charli, Rush and Tatiri all do great drink bottles.

For lunch boxes, insulated ones can be a good way to go – nobody likes lukewarm yoghurt or soggy sandwiches!  Fleurville Kids do an excellent insulated Lunch Pak (it’s actually large enough to be your all-purpose backpack!) which is much favoured by celebs including Gwyneth Paltrow and Matthew Broderick.  Fridge-To-Go lunch bags are also a great choice. While you’re in this category, have a look at the ingenious 4 My Earth eco-lunch products – such a great idea!

There are also loads of products designed to make short trips away easier, such as the hot new Rush Overnight Bags which are available in loads of designs.  I also love the Tiger Tribe Mix-A-Pix magnetic games (available in ‘Robots & Aliens‘ and ‘Fairytale‘) which will keep the kids entertained for ages on long car or plane trips.

Now just as a final note – this is me getting sidetracked – I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the new Tiger Tribe silhouette mobiles.  What a stunning and incredibly cost-effective way to add a colourful feature to your child’s bedroom!  Whether you hang them above the cot or above the change table (or both) it’s going to look fantastic.

Enter ‘KSF’ in the discount code/coupon section at checkout to receive 10% off all orders at Kinder Kaboodle until 31 January 2009. Also, don’t forget to check out the Sale section at Kinder Kaboodle for markdowns on lots of quality goodies.

Special note: Bernice at Kinder Kaboodle is currently having a short break: orders placed between now and 13 January will be dispatched on 14 January (all orders under 500gms will be sent Express on this date).

1. Tiger Tribe Silhouette Mobile – Vintage Plane, $39.95
2. Bobble Art Strawberry Bobbles, $7.95
3. Fleurville Kids Lunch Pak – Pink/Silver, $36.00
4. Tiger Tribe Mix-A-Pix Magnetic Puzzle – Robots & Aliens, $19.95

Nappy Bags from Around the Globe: A Buyer’s Guide

Posted: December 29th, 2008

Today’s post written by Nerida

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Following on from my recent post on the stunning range of locally designed baby bags in our midst, I bring you the cream of overseas designers. From the affordable to the POA-only, there’s something luxe for every taste.

Missoni

Missoni is a very cool brand with a very serious price tag. I am not sure many of us could justify almost $1,300 for a nappy bag but hey, it’s nice to look! Plus it is a nice looking bag, particularly if you are a fan of Missoni’s innovative use of colours and patterns. The bag includes a change mat and could easily be converted to a weekend bag once your nappy carrying days are over.

Missoni baby bags are available at Childrensalon.

Baby Beatrix

Dante Beatrix New York dedicates themselves to creating cool, practical ways to transport gear for mums, dads and kids. Their Baby Beatrix tote is a lovely looking bag which comes in pewter metallic and grey/khaki and includes a very nice looking change mat and pouch. The tote is available from Queenbee

BabyMel London

BabyMel London are relatively new on the baby bag scene, launching their first collection in 2007. The bags contain changemats, bottle holders and come in a variety of colours and shapes. Baby Mel have just designed a limited edition for that fabulous UK fashion chain Topshop.

Luckily we can get them locally at Haggus and Stookles.

Ramalama

In addition to making lovely baby carriers, Ramalama also designs some very nice looking nappy bags. In addition to being highly functional, the bags are very classical and made from fine Italian leather.

Ramalama baby bags are available from Urban Baby.

Mia Bossi

On their website Mia Bossi state that their bags combine fashion with motherhood, creating the ultimate hot mama: these bags really are perfect for hot mamas everywhere! If you’re looking for an incognito bag, you would be hard pressed to spot these designs as nappy carriers, particularly the ‘Alisa’ in zebra.

Mia Bossi bags are available from MetroMum.

Fleurville

The Fleurville totes are handy in that they can be carried 3 ways – as a tote, as a messenger bag or attached to a stroller using an ingenious o-ring. The totes look good, are made of eco-friendly materials, and are incredibly practical, with a whole range of features including the usual bottle holder/change mat but also a changing cloth and see through wipes case.

Fleurville totes are available from The Hip Infant.

(Editors note: Fleurville also make the coolest range of bags for kids. Buy them at Kinder Kaboodle).

Hammitt Collection

I found this one recommended on the Vogue forums (thoroughly recommend if you like chatting all things fashion!). The ‘Suzy’ by Hammitt is one cool looking bag available in an incredible range of colours, from basic black to a very bright looking green. The bag includes a matching change mat.

Available online through Hammitt Bags.

Tod’s

One of my favourite sites, Celebrity Baby Blog, has come out with the proclamation that Tod’s new bag is a must have for new mums, and who am I to argue? (Well my bank balance might!! Tod’s bags are POA!) Unfortunately Tod’s bags are not readily available in Australia and I was unable to find the bag online. So if you have a friend overseas and you ask them really nicely, they might just visit a Tod’s store and buy one for you.

Available in-store only at Tod’s.

  1. Diaper Dude Camouflage Dude Bag $128.95 – Check web for stockists
  2. Missoni Nappy Bag £577.40 (approximately $1,300) from Childrensalon
  3. Baby Beatrix Tote $194.95 – Check web for stockists
  4. BabyMel Amanda Nappy Bag $109.95 from Haggus and Stookles
  5. Ramalama Hannah Nappy Bag $450 from Urban Baby
  6. Mia Bossi Alisa Nappy Bag in Gold Zebra $560 from MetroMum
  7. Fleurville Sling Tote Gold $198 from The Hip Infant
  8. Suzy by Hammitt $US550 (approximately $830) from Hammitt Bags
  9. Tod’s Pashmy Baby Bag P.O.A from Tod’s

Please check individual sites for shipping costs and details.

More Hot Xmas Picks at Kinder Kaboodle – 15% off Store-Wide with KSF My Child Magazine Code

Posted: December 13th, 2008

Today’s post written by Miki

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Last week Angela visited Kinder Kaboodle – www.kinderkaboodle.com.au.  You can see her post here.

Now frankly, I don’t see why she should get all the fun – I love Kinder Kaboodle too!!

So today I’m getting all rebellious.  I don’t care that Angela brought you some gorgeous gift ideas from Kinder Kaboodle just last week; today I’m going to bring you some even better gift ideas from the gorgeous KK, and you, our wonderful KSF readers, can decide for yourselves who chose the better products. (Hint: it’ll be me ;) )

I do concede that Ange did well to point out the 15% discount store-wide - also good for sale items! – valid until December 31 2008 using the new My Child magazine discount code (found inside the front cover of the latest edition).

I will also admit that she got it right when pointing out Kinder Kaboodle’s FREE gift-wrapping. Take advantage of that when you order!

In fact, all of her product picks were fabulous; I love the Mini Rhubarb range too, and the Cocoon Couture Beanbags are a super deal with a number of designs marked down to only $129.95 $85.00.

Hmmm, well….I’m not to be outdone!!

For my first pick, check out the adorable new Taia Hair Clips.  These are the perfect accessories for style-conscious mini fashionistas and look equally pretty in long hair or short, straight or curly, wispy or thick.  There are some great little retro-inspired designs in here.

On the topic of hair accessories, I also love the LocoLili! Reversible Headbands.  Now Bernice has just received a brand new shipment of these so there’s a great range of styles to choose from, but they always sell like hotcakes so please make sure you don’t miss out on the styles you’re after.  Like the Taia Hair Clips they’re really affordable and make perfect stocking stuffers for special little girls.

Mamas & Papas soft toys are always a great choice (I love giving these as baby shower gifts), and they’re also perfect for baby’s first – or second or third! – Christmas.  How sweet is the Classic Rag Doll?  Don’t you just want to hug her?

Lastly, for bags and accessories there are two fabulous brands I have a very hard time choosing between.  They are, of course, Rush and Tiger Tribe.  Both do affordable, well-made products which are appropriately tough in order to survive all the abuse your little tornadoes will put them through.  Just as important, though, are their spectacular good looks!  Both Rush and Tiger Tribe specialise in bold, colourful designs which really stand out on the bag racks at kinder.

Well, what do you think? Who’s the winner, me or Ange? Maybe you’ll just have to pick a little Kinder Kaboodle from both of us….

Don’t forget that you can take 15% off these prices using the My Child discount code!

1. Rush ‘Dinosaur’ Large Canvas Tote, $44.95
2. Assorted Taia Hair Clips, from $8.95ea
3. Tiger Tribe Pencil Case ‘Ice Creams’, $14.95
4. Mamas & Papas Classic Rag Doll, $75.95
5. Crocodile Creek ‘My First Puzzle’ – Vehicles, $29.95
6. Mamas & Papas Canvas Picture ‘Owl’, $44.95
7. Tiger Tribe Jumbo Backpack ‘Wheels’, $39.95
8. Bobble Art Girl Hair Brushes, $12.95ea
9. Crocodile Creek Across The Room Puzzle ‘Kids World ABC’, $29.95

Want to have some fun today? Head on over to  Kinder Kaboodle - www.kinderkaboodle.com.au, and get the jump on getting your kids ready for school-daycare-Nanna’s-anywhere!! next year, with Bernice’s huuuuuuge range of bags, smocks, pencil cases, rainwear, sunwear, art and craft wear, and accessories.

I love the Rush Aliens range for boys featuring fresh colours against a black background, making it funky enough for any little budding alien-catcher. In fact the entire Rush range (both for boys and girls) is stunning and really well priced!  There’s an enormous selection to choose from; go wild!

Melbourne brand Mini Rhubarb has the sweetest range for girls with their Bonnie Bird collection.  Little girls love to collect matching items, so make her day by getting a few pieces from the range.  I’d suggest the backpack and/or library bag, the pencil case and the art smock, and then add in a few little accessories like hair clips to make up her best gift of the year.

I have the KK Magnetic Jungle Theatre Set popped away for my girls for Christmas, and I’m tempted by the sweet 70s style Giddy Giddy fabric pouches for them as well.

And if you’re in the market for a stunning and eternally popular Cocoon Couture Beanbag or three, you’ll be delighted to know that Bernice has six designs which have had the prices slashed from $129.95 to just $85.00!!  That’s more than 30% off!!

If you want a 15% discount store-wide – including sale items!! – until December 31 2008, grab a copy of My Child magazine, and look inside the font cover for the magic code.

Kinder Kaboodle are also noteworthy for their stylish FREE giftwrapping!
