It’s my favourite week of the school year: Book Week!  As a kid I adored dressing up as my favourite character, and as a teenager I loved getting to attend workshops and readings from some of the best Australian authors. As a parent I now get to enjoy it all over again by building up the enthusiasm in my household – we’re significantly upping the number of bedtime stories this week, and doing lots of talking about our favourite books and why we love them.

The media has an interesting way of pigeonholing mothers these days. For some reason, they have only two categories: stay at home mums and working mums. A. A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh books were quite popular in my house when I was growing up, and I have just introduced them to Master R who has been utterly consumed by Pooh’s antics (who can forget him rolling in mud to disguise himself as a dark rain cloud!).

One of the most vivid characters that comes to mind when I think of the series is Owl.
