I love Autumn. It’s just so beautiful? The deciduous trees are a riot of colour as they lay their special carpet of autumn beauty on the ground. In contrast the evergreens seem greener, more sure of themselves with their ongoing zest for life this time of year. I relish the chance every autumn for a twirl in the fallen leaves with my children – it really makes my heart sing.

This roundup of products featuring tree motifs extends the magic of trees in nature into your home, bringing their comforting sense of poise, grace and wisdom with them. Behold their collective glory below.

Kidsonroof: Cardboard Creativity

Remember back to those early years when the wrapping paper kept the kids happy for hours on end? Shortly after the fascination with wrapping paper faded it was the box that become the most treasured possession. The moral of the story is that for children, sometimes the simple things that allow them to use their imagination are often the best, like those found on Kidsonroof – www.kidsonroof.com.

Kidsonroof, a Dutch company, were established in 2005 by Romy Boesveldt  and Ilya Yashkin with a desire to re-connect modern life with nature and rediscover basic values. They aim to adopt an ecological approach to the act of playing, designing products that are made from recycled cardboard and are biodegradable. Kidsonroof have a great range of products guaranteed to stimulate the  imagination and get those creative juices flowing.

Kidsonroof is stocked in Australia by Pukekos In Gumboots. Some of our favourite stockists in Australia are Just Toy’n Around, State of Green and Ruby Pickles – all of which currently carry a good range of Kidsonroof – some of which is on sale – woo!

Kidsonroof: Cardboard Creativity

We all need a little retreat – a place to call our own and decorate as we like and Kidsonroof have two great little hideouts in the Casa Cabana Deco, a great little cubby complete with a door, windows and peepholes, and Iglo, a super place for little explorers to gather together or to be alone for a while. The simple design means that budding decorators can go crazy with crayons, paint or pencils to create something that is truly their own.

Kidsonroof: Cardboard Creativity

Surely there could be no better way to get to their new retreat than to arrive on a trusty steed? Kidsonroof’s Trojan Horse is not only beautiful but also incredibly sturdy, making him perfect for sitting on and playing with.

If you are anything like me and missed out on the creative gene then you’ll love the Totem Figurines. These pop-out characters (a boy, a girl, a cat, bear & baby bear, donkey, a deer, a goat, a dog, a goose and a little bird) will put an end to those tragic stick figures. Slide them into their little stands and these figurines will come to life.  Your favourite figurines will need a home of their own too. MobileHome Recycle! has 8 rooms and an attic perfect for figurines, toys and dolls to explore.

Kidsonroof: Cardboard Creativity

The Bo Buro is the perfect first desk. This cardboard desk is printed with a cute animal design and has two stools, capable of carrying over 40 kilos of weight each. You won’t need to worry about your good furniture being lovingly decorated with crayon again!

Kidsonroof: Cardboard Creativity

Volume Zero is the latest Kidsonroof furniture collection and is made of solid beech wood. The prints featured on the chairs and benches are stunning Japanese fabrics attached with water-based paint. These really are beautiful to look at as well as functional.

Kidsonroof: Cardboard Creativity

Last, but certainly not least, is beautiful Popje. Made from re-used fabrics Popje is anything you want her to be – a cat, rabbit or a doll. The only limit is your imagination!

Going Green This Christmas: A Guide to Eco Friendly Gifts

Posted: December 19th, 2008

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

There will be more green then red floating about Christmas this year, with a huge shift in consumer consciousness making all that is eco-friendly and organic number 1 on most people’s wish list. And rightly so – check out these ultra-gorgeous buys for kiddies which will keep Mother Earth happy too!

First up: the tree. Aside from letting them go crazy with Clag and pasta and creating their own special pieces, Biome (one of my new fave stores) has awesome fair-trade decorations that are bright and festive enough for kids, and will look chic on plastique too! This box of Assorted Handmade Decorations is handmade in Bangladesh and just $17.95.

Generation Wonder stock only fair-trade items, and is indeed a wonderland of beautiful gift ideas. Check out these totally biodegradable Mobile Homes by Kidsonroof ($44.90) which allows kids to create, construct and decorate to their heart’s content. Plus it makes for a novel place to store toys.

For a gorgeous keepsake I just love the Barefoot Mother and baby Elephant soft toy set ($43.50, buy together or separately for $19.75) – a percentage of proceeds go to the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, each one is handmade and individual, and they come in a variety of colours.

For something simple guaranteed to keep them entertained and active for hours, a Fairtrade Skipping Rope is a great stocking filler at $14.99. Or let your little one say it loud and proud with these cool Eco tees by Tiny Revolutionary ($34.95)!

Eco Child have a huuuge range of eco-friendly products, including toys like the very funky Anamalz wooden toy, um, animals, ($9.95) which are not only cute but are also made from renewable resources, are non-toxic (always a plus), and a portion of sales is donated to various wildlife charities. Aw, feel those warm and fuzzies!

Eco Child also stock practical ideas such as these Foogo Sippy Cups ($24.95) which are unbreakable, BPA-free and FDA-Approved, which is all A-OK in my book.

Got someone super-fussy to buy for? Eco Child have it covered – stuff their stocking with Organic Cotton Balls ($7.95), which are practical, versatile and top quality. I kid, I kid, (though they are of course, very nice!) – Mums will love the range of natural beauty products (try Bod Bath Salts Princess Blend $14.95) and mums-to-be will adore these cute and comfy PJ pants by Hot Milk ($49.95).

And finally (and most importantly): clothes. There are so many gorgeous organic labels out there, and not all of them are beige (sorry, ‘natural’).

Purebaby is one of my faves, and Baby’s Got Style have a great selection. I’m loving the idea of this pretty striped knit tank dress ($44.95) as a lightweight summer option, carried through to winter with tights and a skivvy; or for boys the khaki stripe overalls ($39.95) for something cutesy but cool. The Purebaby website also has a great range of basics and premmie wear.

Gaia Organic Cotton is another well-loved label, and with good reason: the certified 100% organic cotton is whipped into beautiful creations like the Babydoll Dress ($44.95) and Grandpa Top ($39.95) or these incredibly pretty Blue Bell Botties ($29.95)!

For something a bit funky, Mini Eco have a massive range of brands including Speesees, whose bright and colourful tanks are just $25.95, and these ultra cool tees by Sckoon ($24.95). Baby Blend also do cute prints on organic tees ($29.95 a pop, my fave is “Crabby“!) as do Kee-Ka at ShopHouse ($26.00).

Wishing you all a green, clean, and very happy Festive Season!

Each card is made from eco-friendly recycled laminated microwave cardboard, and is reversibly printed with flowers, animals, coins, metal, wood, fire, air, space and more, to create a spectacular and dynamic result.

Tell us about your life, and what you did before you had your children?

Right now life is hectic…and I’m loving it!  I think between my husband and I we have more jobs than there are people; we’re still working out why that is!

My life revolves around our little family of four and the communities we exist in.  Generation Wonder takes up a big chunk of the day, we have a small extended family we see often, lots to do with school and preschool life, and a  lovely group of friends we enjoy spending time with.

I’m also thriving on doing voluntary work with a very special charity called Room to Read, which builds schools and libraries for children (mostly in Asia and Africa) who would not otherwise have access to the lifelong gift of education.

Life was certainly moving at a more reasonable pace a few years ago, and before children…well, looking back, it seems like we had all the time in the world, even though we felt very busy at the time.

I grew up in Sydney, then Brisbane, then back to Sydney for University.  I qualified as an Occupational Therapist and worked in the field of mental health for many years before taking up a human resources training and development role in the health sector.

I always had this sense of wanting to do a job that helped people.  I did return to work after my first child but after the second, decided I needed to do something that was closer to home and allowed me to spend more time with the children and less time running them up and down to day care.

You stock only Fairtrade, eco and organic products only at Generation Wonder, and they’re all based around ‘stories’. Tell us a little about that.

As a child, I could always be mesmerised by a story.  My happiest childhood memories are long lazy days reading books under the bed covers.

Of the things I remember learning about at school, much of what I remember is because I learned the story of it, the background, the bit that makes a trivial fact or figure vivid and real.  So when I started Generation Wonder, the love of story, combined with the desire to do a job that helped others, led me to find wonderful products with wonderful stories.

I really believe our littlest citizens have the biggest capacity to make a difference in the world.  Children are so receptive to learning, I feel it’s a missed opportunity not to introduce to them from a young age, stories that connect them to their global community.  I believe that if we give them the opportunity to learn about the environment, or someone else’s human experience, we give them the opportunity of growing up knowing that they matter, and that they can make a difference in the world, just by the choices they make.

Because a major role in the life of a child is play, and that is how they learn, at Generation Wonder, I’ve combined the wonder of play with global stories, and hope that a little learning follows.

What are your top 5 bestsellers, and why?

My First Doctor’s Kit and My First Picnic Basket are very popular.  Perhaps it’s the wonderful story of the ladies in Thailand who are supported by a local group of nuns to make these beautiful toys by hand.  Plus they are delightful and imaginative and have lots of stuff in them!

Fair Trade dolls by Lanka Kade – I think everyone can find a doll that looks a little like the child they are buying for, because these dolls represent kids looking different, and that reality is generally not represented very well in children’s dolls.

Crocodile Creek bibs and place mats – These are selling well encourages me a lot.  The message about the value of PVC FREE items for our kids and in manufacturing processes must be getting out there.

Zid Zid Kids Mini Poofs – I’ve barely loaded these on to the website and they are flying out the door!  Zid Zid Kids is a family business in Morocco – their pieces are just beautifully designed, beautifully hand made – the stuff of whimsy and fantasy.  I sigh with awe every time I see them.

The Purple Flower Felt Bag by Third World Craft, Nepal, is tops  – it’s such a gorgeous colour and I think it’s just the right size for a young girl, not too big, not too small, just right.  And teamed with a Lanka Kade skipping rope and a TWC heart purse, it’s a gorgeous, and completely Fair Trade, gift.

What’s your favourite activity to do with your kids?

Can I say putting them to bed at night??  Seriously though, there is something very soothing about that time of night when rapid-fire conversations slow down to hushed whispers and restless little bodies relax into the sheets.

We do love to go to the swimming pool or the beach.  It’s an activity we can all do together, gets us outside, and everyone gets to relax.

Complete this sentence: Generation Wonder is…

…a community of families out to make a difference in the world!
