Australian Made: Part 2 – Celebrating Designers Who Make Their Collections In Australia

………………………………………………………………………………………………

The land of children’s fashion design here in Australia is as vast as our glorious country. There are the small, intimate labels, just like our small townships through to internationally recognised designers living abroad that still call Australia home. The spectrum of tastes runs from the bohemian right through to the traditional. There is such a vast point of difference between each label, but what they each have in common is a strong Australian identity.

Today bring you Part 2 of our two part series on Australian labels that design and produce their collections right here in Australia. This is not an easy task: there are few incentives for them to do so; the government offers little support – taxes are high, and subsidies are low – and the benefits of off-shore production promise lower production costs and higher profit margins. It’s true that you may pay a little more for Australian made, but we’re confident that you will be happy with what you receive for it: the knowledge that you are supporting local industry and reducing your carbon footprint, that fair working conditions are in place, and that you are purchasing a high quality product that will take everything that your child dishes out to it and then still be good to go again.

We hope you love these Aussie labels as much as we do. Please show your support and buy a piece or two :)

Well Spotted!

Well Spotted!

Anyone who can pull off a Star Wars themed tee and be totally stylish rather than just geeky is a winner in my book. In the words of the designer behind Well Spotted, the label was created “out of parental joy, expectation & well, frustration!”. Tony Clayton (whose resume includes stints at both Mambo and Macrs), the man behind Well Spotted,  always held the  belief that if all our big companies take the manufacturing of garments overseas, no one will be able to make even a t-shirt here in Australia. He swore that if ever ventured into creating his own range, he would keep it in Australia. Starting off making slogan tees for adults, Well Spotted somehow morphed into a range for kids (I think son Finbar may have been a bit of the inspiration here), and true to his word, Tony ensured that the entire label was an Australian product. The  t-shirts are designed by Tony in his studio in Summer Hill, made in Bankstown and then printed by Tony in Leichhardt.  You can find Well Spotted tees at Cornflowerblue and Little Styles or check here for a stockist.

Cried Wolf

Cried Wolf

What do you get when you put a newborn baby in the arms of a buyer from General Pants? A whole new funky Australian designed label that’s part surfer style, part skater style and a whole lot of seriously hip. Cried Wolf has some of the funkiest tees and boardies, and all of their t-shirts are designed and printed right here in Australia! How cool is that (now to convince them to make their boardies here too!). Right now you can find super bargains on the past summer range at About A Boy or here for their stockist list.

………………………………………………………………………………………………

One Sunday

One Sunday

Dreamy days at the beach, long lazy afternoons with friends… one Sunday is a collection full of colour, where elegance rhymes with comfort, carefully chosen cuts and fabrics.” One Sunday is a gorgeous boutique label for tweens 8- 14 that are after something a little refined, age appropriate and totally stylish. Using New Zealand milled jerseys and cottons, the range is then designed, cut and sewn right in here in Australia. Click here for stockists.

Tkxi Surf

Tkxi Surf

With most of the Australian population living on the coast, it is only reasonable to suspect that a great many of us spend a lot of the summer days at the beach. For those more inland, there are lots of rivers, lakes and dams (or local swimming pools) to keep us cool in the heat as well. Of course, this calls for swimwear that will endure a whole lot of wear, offer SPF 50+ protection and look totally stylish. Designed by Karen Panaretto, formally of Aussie swimwear icon Seafolly, Tkxi Surf is an Australian design and made swimwear label that ticks all three boxes. You can find Tkxi Surf at a number on online boutiques, click here for stockists.

Electric Boy

Electric Boy

Members of the Justice League in the Wiggles Big Red Car; A Batman Shadow Puppet; Darth Vadar joins the Green Side (found riding on a bike)….these are just some of the super cool prints to find their way onto the tees and jumpers of Electric Boy’s Winter 2011 range. With a label who describes their inspiration behind their name in these words: “I really really love The Mighty Boosh, especially Princey Vincey!! But I couldn’t be Electro Boy, so thus born Electric Boy!!” you know you’ve found something very special for your little man. Electric Boy is designed in Australia with all items printed right here in Australia. You can find the label at Cradle Rock, Ten Little Indians and Threads of Red or try their stockist list for a store near you.

………………………………………………………………………………………………

Brusselsprouts

Brusselsprouts

Having studied Art History at uni, then working as both a ceramic artist and hairdresser amongst other jobs, Victoria Crisp became inspired to create the label Brusselsprouts when she was pregnant with her second son. With her husband  on the road driving road trains for the mines, Victoria sews at home (and now runs her new B&M shop) in Kalgoorlie, West Australia whilst also balancing her duties as mummy to two gorgeous little boys. The Brusselsprouts range is all about the fabric, so you will find stunning garments that are rather simplistic in style, but absolutely stunning to the eye thanks to the careful selection of materials. Brusselsprouts garments can be purchased at their online store.

………………………………………………………………………………………………

Tiddles & Chich

Tiddles & Chich

Tiddles & Chich is an Australian designed and made label that release two ranges each year. Creating a range that is somewhat French classic and stylish, yet maintains a modern day aesthetic, Tiddles and Chich has been seen on a bevy of celebrity children including Suri Cruise (not just once either!). Created by Freyr Lennon and Luise Geddes, and later joined by Freyr’s sister Alexis who has returned from the UK after working for The Royal Family and The Conrans, this label produces a spectrum of goodies from play to party for babies to seven year olds. For stockists click here.

………………………………………………………………………………………………

Little Miss J

Little Miss J

Using luxe fabrics, laces and trims, Little Miss J is a label designed by Jo Lambert whose subtle colour palette and french overtones are perfect for special events, birthdays and for little girls who wish to stand out from the crowd. Proudly made in Australia, the range is perfect for little girls 1-10 years. You will find Little MIss J at Hopscotch Children’s Boutique and The Little Kidz Closet, or you can click here for stockists.

Elodie & Elvis

Elodie & Elvis

Are you looking for an exquisite, high end label for your little one that is often found on the catwalk and has a real European flavour.  Specialising in exquisite coats and clothing for both boys and girls, Doris Reymond created the label in 2001 and has seen the label blossom to become an Australian boutique favourite. Both designed and made it Melbourne, Australia, any one of the items from the range will bring an element of sophistication to your childs wardrobe. It’s past the middle of October now, so I am going to be audacious and use the ‘C’ word.  That’s right folks, it’s time to start shopping for Christmas! Do yourselves a favour and start putting things away now so that you don’t have a last minute panic which breaks the bank and drives you crazy.

One look at The Little Kidz Closet – www.thelittlekidzcloset.com.au – and you’ll be swept into a wonderful world of incredibly cool gear, just perfect for Christmas, that you just don’t see every day. Lesley at The Little Kidz Closet hunts far and wide to bring together a range of products that stand out and will have other parents admiringly asking you where you got it from. (Will you give away the TLKC secret?  That’s for you to decide ;) )

I’m quite enamoured with the game of Klop from Finland (#3 below). Stylish and wooden, it will improve maths ability (yours as well as the kids’!); deliver fits of giggles and last as the kind of game that gets brought out by popular demand at every picnic and BBQ for years to come.

I’m also *very* taken with the gorgeous Interactive Play Rugs by IVI.  Sourced from Turkey, these rugs are three dimensional come in four different designs with farms, roads and other landscape features marked out in detail.  Add your own toy animals, cars and so on and you’re ready for hours upon hours of creative play. I’m especially impressed that the roads are without pile, making them smooth and easy for cars to glide along. (Speaking of those animals, toys and other playthings, storage is also an issue at our house. The Mor-Stor products offer a great solution, with a lovely selection of tubs, boxes and baskets in a variety of bright happy colours – love’em!).

To help along your Christmas gifting plans Lesley at The Little Kidz Closet has some great offers for you. The Little Kidz Closet – www.thelittlekidzcloset.com.au – never disappoints me when I visit. Comprising of a supremely classy selection of kids fashion, accessories, decor solutions and stunning furniture including cots and modern classics in miniature, everything in store is ultra luxe, and there’s just been a delivery of new stock that I’m sure will knock your socks off (as it did mine!)

To experience the what’s new at The Little Kidz Closet head straight to the New Arrivals section where you will find Lesley’s bounty of gorgeous new goodies.  First there is the much anticipated collection from Little Miss J.  If you haven’t laid eyes on it before then you are in for a major treat! This gorgeous label is at the top end of exclusive boutique children’s wear and is found comfortably at home at The Little Kidz Closet. It is sweet and feminine, with incredible attention to detail. An exquisite new addition to the store.

The Create a World Map is another exciting new product presented by The Little Kids Closet, which provides a unique storyboard for boys and girls to express their thoughts and act out stories. The kit includes many colorful playing pieces; animals, vehicles, fairy-tale characters, and more to choose from – over 90 in fact – all ready to let your little one’s imagination run wild! Made from high-quality felt, all playing pieces are hand-cut and use premium graphic and printing techniques. I like this product a lot and can imagine how lovely it will be for little ones to get caught up in the joy of bringing their special stories to life.

Another great addition to The Little Kidz Closet is this new Booster Cusion which is just perfect for the stage my little girl is at right now. Do you know this stage? It’s the stage when she thinks she is ready to sit up in a normal chair, but really she isn’t quite ready. Oh the drama! This is where this booster cushion steps in to fill the momentary gap between her development and the size of a regular chair. The comfortable and durable cushion simply fits securely on any chair elevating her to the perfect height.

In the lead up to spring as the sun begins to make its shy return, I can already feel the need for major spring clean and tidy up. Inevitably each year, this sends me on a quest for new storage to keep all my hard work in order (or so I hope!). The Little Kidz Closet has gorgeous new array of storage options for helping out this spring – all nicely laid out in their Storage Solutions page for you. Their are loads of new items from brand MorStor in a fantastic range of colours, shapes and sizes. My personal favourites are the Water HyacinthTubs and the Cooper Canvas Tub in the Cars print – just perfect for stowing the never ending supply of toy cars at my house!  All of these storage solutions are designed to not only keep your little ones things neat and tidy but (and most importantly I think!) looking fantastic too!

The final preparations for spring wouldn’t be complete without the excitement of a little clear out, would they?! Lesley is doing  just that, so don’t miss the sale section: with up to 50% off in there you’re sure to come away laughing. In addition to these bargains, Lesley is and offering all KSF readers some great offers: FREE post on orders of full priced clothing over $50.00 (excluding Tea Princess). You can add a slight interior design addiction to my many vices. I’m not too creative when it comes to working with a blank slate, so I turn to the internet looking for inspiration which will take my room from dull to something with true wow factor.  If you’re decorating a nursery from scratch, or just looking to give it a wee face lift, I know the perfect place to source some of the quality designs in both children’s furniture and decor that you would come across in your favourite magazines and interior design blogs. That place, of course, is The Little Kidz Closet – www.thelittlekidzcloset.com.au – which houses the cream of the crop in all things nursery.

My jaw dropped when I saw the newly stocked Ubabub nursery furniture and artwork. Oh my, the Ubabub Pod is every desgn loving parent’s design! The cocoon-like shape, and perspex sides with star cut outs for easy visability would fit perfectly in a stylish nursery.  They even come with a mattress, so all you need to do is find the linen to match your theme. The Ubabub Pretty Pink print has taken my fancy, so I could just see myself creating a bird theme if I was to have a third bub.

Creating a theme for a room, or even just sprucing it up a little, can often be created through the discovery of the perfect bedding set? Stuck for ideas? Head over to The Little Kidz Closet bedding range for a gallery of ideas. The Baby Kas, Kas Kids and Whimsylinen ranges,  which have just arrived, are simply delightful.  The rich choice of colour palettes will allow you to create a sleepytime ambiance , whilst providing an environment that is sure to foster your child’s imagination (if they’re anything like my Master R, they may even take to saying goodnight to the characters on their duvet!). Lastly, for that quick pick me up perhaps a new Dotty Spot Designs canvas or Adorning Al will do the job!

On the fashion front, head over to The Little Kidz Closet for up to 60% off their current sale stock including a dabbling of Tea Princess, Three Little Trees, Tommy Rocket and Walnut Shoes. While you are there, take a sneak peek of the Little Miss J collection that arrives at the end of July (you can pre-order your favourites from the collection to ensure you get your pick).

To help you start your nursery collection, or perhaps add a few pieces to complement your current design, Lesley from The Little Kidz Closet is offering all KSF readers FREE postage on all linen orders $250+ (before postage charges added) . Use code ‘KSFLINEN‘ at check out to redeem. If kids fashion is your preference you can snatch FREE postage on all full-priced clothing orders of $50+ (before postage charges added) using code ‘KSFOffer’. Both of these fine offers expire on 31 July, 2010, so dive on in!
