Elizabeth at La Toriana – www.latoriana.com.au – has really let the festive season go to her head! I’m not sure whether it’s too much champagne or if she’s just feeling incredibly generous, but she has decided to give readers the most enormous pre-Christmas discount yet.  Are you ready for this?  Are you sure? Are you standing by with your credit card ready to pounce?

Because get this: Elizabeth has decided to mark down all full priced Oobi, Deshabille, BRITT, Miniwhisk, Thurlby Farm, Dolly Up, Huggalugs, Nanny Pickle and Penny Scallan by an extraordinary 35% (excluding sale items already reduced by up to 85%, and Tummy Bear). Use the discount code ‘Rudolph’ at checkout. Alternatively, you can get FREE shipping (with no minimum purchase amount) using the code ‘KSFpost’ at checkout. Both of these offers are valid until 10 December 2009 only, so go wild: they’re the last ones before Christmas!

There’s an awful lot to love at La Toriana at the moment, with some truly stunning labels on showcase.  There are the eternally popular Princess Ratbag pettiskirts, for example, which are adored by little girls all around Australia and fly off the shelves faster than the human eye can track!  And while we’re looking at pretty things for little princesses, take in the exquisite Tea Princess collection, which epitomises vintage chic.

I’m also quite taken by the range of aprons and tea towels by Ogilvie Designs.  High quality cotton and fun, eyecatching designs make these a winner, especially if you have a family BBQ on Christmas or Boxing Day.

If you’re looking for stocking fillers and bargains, make sure you look at the Specials section which is updated every Monday. You have to get in quick, considering that products in there are discounted by up to 85% off, they won’t last long! Cheers to that!

Prices quoted below are valid with code (read above) until 10 December 2009 only.

1. Princess Ratbag Pettiskirt – Scarlet Red, $80.00

Easter Fashion for Every Taste

Posted: April 3rd, 2009

Today’s post written by Kat

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

I have to admit something: I am not a fan of theme-dressing. Sparkly christmas earrings give me hives; licenced kidswear causes nausea.

So, thinking about ‘Easter Fashion’ I nearly choked on my Creme egg (theme-chocolates I can handle).

Thankfully, I’ve realised you can be cheerfully festive and dressed to impress, without the need for fluffy bunny ears…(though if you can’t resist, try the hip version: Rock Your Baby’s Rabbit knit hat, available at Baby’s Got Style for $29.95. Adorable!)

Nanny Pickle’s Bad Bunny Collection is so cute and cheeky it wins my vote for rabbit-themed clobber. Clobber, though, is a bit harsh, because this collection is made from supersoft bamboo and organic fabrics that are just luscious to touch, and come complete with important life lessons such as “Eat your Crusts” and “Don’t Run With Scissors”. Hehe! You can find the Bad Bunny at La Toriana from $19.95.

Cradlerock have a handy Easter section which includes these funky rabbit tees and hoody by Tiny Mammoth (designed by Beci Orphin of Princess Tina fame). How cool is this unique take on a gorgeous vintage print?!

Quinn Macool’s take on bunny prints is, erm, cool! From the cute retro “I Believe” (aaw!) to the “How To Draw A Bunny” tee, perfect for little artistes, you can personalise everything to your taste and nab a nifty new tee for only $22!

But if the only bunnies you want to see this Easter are of the chocolate variety, you could instead have fun putting together a gorgeous new outfit to celebrate:

Baby: Keep little ones warm and snug with a funky romper from Onesies – you’d be hard pressed to go past the simple and chic prints from Danish label Nanoou ($42, 0-12 months), teamed with this versatile, soft velour hat by Gertie & Me ($9.95) and gorgeous matching booties ($9.95; both available at The Hip Infant) for maximum aw-factor. You could also add a sweet little cardi like this one from Purebaby ($32.47 on sale from Just Ripe) for extra warmth and cuteness!

Little Boys: If Nanna’s going to be at Easter lunch, it might be wise to leave your rock’n'roll tees at home, and go for a timeless piece like this Wonderboy Stripe tee ($39.95, 6m-7Y, from Itty Bitty Yuppy). Work it with some classic denim (Munster Stovey 2 Jeans, $80, sizes 2-10; from Tiny People) and retro cool trainers – Adidas Country Stripe, $59.95, sizes US4-10; from Kido Store). If it’s cool, skip the hoody and go for a smart jacket like the Steve Mac coat from Freshbaked (on sale for $29.95 at BabysGotStyle). Watch out, ladies!

Little Girls: We all know how spoilt for choice little girls are now days when it comes to fashion – it’s hard to narrow down a party frock but this week my pick is Polka’s Black Birdy Frou Dress ($99, sizes 3-7; from BabysGotStyle). Accessorise with a slouchy knitted hat (Toshi, $18.95) and ribbed tights for a nice play on texture (Marquise knit tights, $9.95, both also from BabysGotStyle) - or try printed legwarmers scrunched at the ankle if you’re really cool (Huggalugs, $14.50 on sale from My Baby Rocks). Shoes? Yunginz Classeez ($59.95) are pretty enough for every occassion!

Please check individual stores for postage and delivery details. Always check the KSF All Current Deals page to see if you are eligible for any discount.

Meet & Greet: A Moment with Elizabeth from La Toriana

Posted: November 11th, 2008

Today I’d like you to meet Elizabeth Murphy, proprietor of boutique baby and kids store La Toriana – www.latoriana.com.au.

From country Victoria, where Elizabeth lives on a farm with her husband Gary, and 6 year old daughter Tiana, Elizabeth has created one of the finest baby and kids boutiques online.

As Elizabeth would say “grab a cuppa, sit back and relax” and enjoy! – Angela.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Tell us a bit about yourself – what makes you tick?

I’m a country girl living in Bendigo (Central Victoria) on a property with no close neighbours. We have some sheep, alpaca’s, geese, chooks, a vege patch … the works!

I love meeting people and going  places, good food, good friends and good wine and lazy days doing nothing. I am extremely passionate about my family and my business which I run on my own and around my family at home.

Tell us a little about your business?

I started La Toriana in September 2007. La Toriana, the name, is derived from our 3 gorgeous girls names:  Lara,  Victoria and Tiana.

We focus on bringing customers quality, style and affordable baby and kids clothing, toys and accessories, and showcasing Australian and New Zealand designers, both well-known and “up and coming”.

We aim to surpass all expectations in online shopping, and pride ourselves on our customer service. We have clear policies and a permanent cart so you can pop things into… come back a couple days later and don’t have to find them all again.

We aim to have one of the largest online premmie baby clothing ranges available online. I personally know how hard it is trying to find stylish and affordable premmie clothes.  A percentage of all sales in the premmie baby category goes to national Premmie foundation and Loddon Mallee Kids, our local (Bendigo) premmie support group.

New developments coming soon to La Toriana are a glossy catalogue and some new features on our website… so keep an eye out!

Why did you decide to choose to start an online business?

After leaving a corporate position in the health sector when I was pregnant with my third daughter, I decided to pursue a dream of working from home with the flexibility of working around the family.

We live in the country and know many friends who live interstate and quite remote.  They don’t have time or able to leave the farm to get affordable clothing and toys for their family and friends. In their main general store where there are limited items to choose from, the prices can be extremely high.  Internet bridges the gap and is so convenient.

Having a choice and finding unique products for family and friends is easier… I remember the time I bought a dress for a party my daughter went to… there are limited places to shop in our area and another little girl had the same dress on.  That sure inspired me to continue my dream of an online boutique providing new and unique products.

For me, friends and family are the most important part of my life, and being able to bring in an income with the flexibility of being “there” for whenever the family needed me was most important to me.  Life is too short not to see my family grow up and have fun and being part of it all.

You stock a lot of beautiful products. Where do you find them, and what do you look for when finding them for your store?

There are many online stores these days and mums in business is so much in the media. I really wanted – and needed – a point of difference to help make La Toriana stand out from the crowd.

I had seen so many wonderful, talented Australian and New Zealand designers doing amazing products for babies and kids, I really wanted to showcase them rather than look abroad. I am so very proud of our local home grown fashion designers, and believe me there are so so many its hard to choose!

I also try and source unique, different to what’s already out there in other online boutiques and slowly La Toriana is gaining a great reputation and a great customer following.  There are many times I wish I had another baby as there truly are some beautiful items being created.

Its funny you know… when I first started looking for designers and products, I didn’t have a website and was unknown and, at times, that was difficult.   I had a few knock backs, but now I get so many people seeking me out and sending me samples…. I see a lot of great products.  It’s very rewarding.

What are your 5 favourite things for baby and kids at the moment?

There are so many…. I hate to choose!

Tea Princess is an Australian designer label for babies and kids to 6 years and has a huge following in a short time.  I am so privileged to be one of very few online stocking this brand. I especially love this Summer collection and this one (see pick below) is favourite of mine.

Nanny Pickle is a new designer with gorgeous organic bamboo baby clothing and a brand new Nursery collection labeled “Bad Bunny” and they are eco friendly, stylish and gorgeous.  I Love this made from recycled paper: these vintage inspired door knob hangers stylishly tell visitors when its not quite a timely time to visit comes in a set of 4.

Wild Things of Noosa is our newest addition at La Toriana, and it’s perfect!   Australian designer making excellent kids and baby wear.  It’s always hard finding boys designer clothing and this sure will soon be a favourite amongst mums of boys.  Shorts, hats in store now, and more to come soon.

annieB’s “max” bean  chair for kids is a new release and selling wildly this Christmas.  I already have to pop in another order for more. It’s a great room accessory, for outside or in any room.  Great up to 6 yrs.  Also come in pink. A friend bought one and her 3 yr old lives in it!!

Little Pearls for Little Girls has always been a favourite.  So stylish are these genuine, fresh water pearls… it’s a gift I give anyone who is having a Christening or first birthday as its fitting for a special occasion.

Clockwise from top left:

Tea Princess Bella Rose Gypsy Skirt $52.95
Wild Things of Noosa “Yellow Dogs” unisex hat $26.95
Nanny Pickle Doorknob Hangers$14.50
AnnieB’s Bean Chair Max Blue $79.95
Little Pearls for Little Girls Necklace and Bracelet set (also sold separately) $89.95

***Please check the KSF All Current Offers page and banner advertising section to see if there are discount offers for this store/products***

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting up an online store?

  • Believe in yourself
  • Research…well before you start research what/where/how/who of your key industry and focus is
  • Know your target market
  • Be passionate about what you are doing and a plan ahead
  • Get your time management and organisational skills tight
  • Be able to multi task and wear many hats….. and be able to do it at the drop of a hat
  • Network!! It’s invaluable
  • Know your budget
  • Surround yourself with key people you can tap into when needed
  • Take time for yourself
  • Enjoy your business

It’s a lot of hard work, but the rewards are ever so satisfying!

La Toriana also has a blog with articles on many suppliers who are also mums in business.

ShopHouse: New Season’s Oobi, mill&mia, Pure Baby, Cuddlefish is in the House, plus Comp to enter, GWP, Gift Voucher and FREE postage offers

Posted: October 13th, 2008

Today’s post written by Miki.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

We’re on a roll with Summer ‘09 ranges at the moment, so it is with great delight that I report to you that the new stock is in the house at ShopHouse – www.shophouse.com.au!

We’re longtime ShopHouse fans at KidStyleFile, and who can blame us when you consider that the brands stocked include Annabel Trends, Baobab, IDTee, Kee-Ka, Lil’ Lana, mill & mia, Mondays Child Pyjamas, Oobi Baby – skin and hair care products (Bod and Eco.Kid), a lovely range of toys and decor pieces from Alimrose Designs, Moltex nappies, Organic Bubs baby food, Cocoon Couture, Krooom, Little Chipipi, Look at the Wall, Mon Tresor, Little Kitchen, and The Little Experience, must-have accessories from Penny Scallan, PouchMISS and Rileah Design, not to mention one of our organic favourites, and the little dog laughed.

New in store at the moment is the delightful Oobi Summer ‘08/’09 range which features pretty party dresses for little girls in retro-inspired fabrics and sporting rosette and sash details.  These are the perfect summer ‘dressy’ dress for your little princess!

For baby and toddler girls I adore the sailor dresses, and the boys don’t miss out either with sweet little Sunday Suits (these are my pick of the day – too cute for words!). Also check out ShopHouse’s range of Oobi Summer accessories, with hats, bibs and hair clips to compliment every Oobi outfit!m

mill&mia are out in force with their new Summer range too – designed in Melbourne and appropriately hip, we’re looking at girls’ skirts and dresses in a comfy yet stylish t-shirt fabric and a boys range featuring a vintage robot print.  Awesome!  It’s impossible to go past the quality of mill&mia, everything has been so beautifully put together.

During the month of October, purchase any three items from the mill&mia range and receive a super-cute mill&mia Padded Rabbit valued at $21.95.  These little rabbits are just adorable, made from the delft daisy and kiss daisy chain cotton/linen from mill&mia’s Summer ‘09 range.

Pure Baby are pure organic bliss, perfect for delicate skin.  With Pure Baby’s impossibly soft cotton and crisp, stylish designs these pieces can’t be beaten for newborn gifts – and since it seems to be ‘baby arrival season’, I bet you know at least one person due around now!  So there you go – pressie sorted; just grab some Pure Baby goodness from ShopHouse. Pure Baby clothes go right up to size 2 years, so why not nab some for your own tot while you’re at it?

The last designer I’ll profile before I give in and go nuts with the images is Australian kids swimwear label Cuddlefish

First of all, Cuddlefish is brilliant because you can be comfortable in the knowledge that delicate skin is protected from the harsh antipodean sunlight with 50+UV fabrics. Secondly, it’s great because the buoyancy aid swimsuits help kids stay safe and gain confidence in the water all day long – no more putting on and taking off buoyancy aids all day. Thirdly, Cuddlefish is great because… well, it just looks so darn cute!

ShopHouse have the full range of buoyancy aid swimsuits, short- and long-sleeve swim tees, swim shorts, hats and terry ponchos, making it a one-stop-shop for kids beach and pool wear this summer.

Bronwyn at ShopHouse is offering a brilliant incentive to shop at The House this October by offering a $5 store credit when you spend over $50 (including postage), and a $12 store credit when you spend over $100!

To redeem your credit, all you have to do is tell Bronwyn who your favourite kidswear designer is -  and it doesn’t even have to be one that she currently stocks!  Leave the info in the comments field at checkout and she’ll set up your credit.  Thanks Bronwyn :)

Another ShopHouse giveaway tip for you: sign up to the ShopHouse newsletter during October and go into the running to win an outfit from organic designer ‘and the little dog laughed’. Go to the ShopHouse homepage to sign up now!

Last of all, if you’d like to get yourself FREE Express postage at ShopHouse, grab a copy of Shop 4 Kids magazine to get the exclusive KSF discount code; it expires on October 31, so make the most of it! (Read the full terms and conditions here). Can’t get to a newsagent? Check the KSF Weekly Newsletter to pick up the code. Not a subscriber? Sign up here.

Today is National Premmie Day. Chances are you know someone, or are someone, who’s had a prem baby: each year over 20,000 newborn Australian babies are admitted to Neo-natal Intensive Care Units and Special Care Nurseries owing to their pre-term arrival.

Today is the day to spare a thought – and a dollar or two – for those that toil to save the lives of little babies needing medical assistance, to those tiny little souls who fight so fiercely for survival and triumph over the odds, and to those angel babies who didn’t stay in this life long, but who profoundly touched the lives of those around them while they did.

Elizabeth at La Toriana – www.latoriana.com.au (mum to 3 prem babies herself) is offering KidStyleFile readers a unique opportunity to grab a bargain and support the National Premmie Foundation in their mission to offer support to prem babies and their families.

Make a purchase at La Toriana and receive a KSF exclusive 20% discount, plus a free gift for you. In addition, Elizabeth will donate 10% of your purchase amount to the National Premmie Foundation with an individual card including your name (optional) and donation amount.
