I have been waiting impatiently for the latest range from Rock Your Baby. The 80’s are back! You may have already heard this and cringed at the thought, but we want to celebrate all that was good about being a kid in the 80’s and bring a little of that back to your family today.

Leave the shoulder pads and big hair behind, and think leg warmers, candy coloured clothing, long tees, pedal pushers, pantaloon jumpsuits, Ray Bans, cool sneakers and grandpa tops.

To really get into the groove pull out old board games like Operation and Twister, and re-live classic 80s movies like Ghostbusters, Karate Kid and, appropriately, Back to the Future.

It might not feel like it when you step outside, but summer is well and truly underway at our style mecca, Baby’s Got Style – www.babysgotstyle.com.au. Even when the weather is crapola outside, just looking at all the beautiful summery things at BGS puts a smile on my face. So break out the sunnies, throw on your favourite shorts and slip into those thongs; we’re off for a little tour of the newest summer arrivals!

First stop for the summer party train is none other than Oobi.  No longer content to ‘only’ make the most adorable baby and toddler clothing in Australia (twice voted KidStyleFile readers’ favourite baby and kids designer), Oobi have now branched out into sweet children’s homewares, with a pair of vintage-inspired quilts.  Trucks for boys, tulips for girls, and a really lovely patchwork design make these quilts this summer’s must-have room accessory for your kidlets.  Have a baby under 12 months so can’t use the quilt as bedding?  No probs – they also make incredibly stylish playmats to put down on the floor.  Also new from Oobi are the melamine spoons, which come in sets of four with colours for boys and girls. You’ll be looking for any excuse to feed your tot in public with these!

Rock Your Baby have a fantastic new array of hair accessories for the little girls in your life. Headbands and bow clips in everything from delicate lace to fun fruity prints to flirty florals, these clips will really put the finishing touch on any outfit your junior fashionista cares to put together.

While we’re looking at girlswear, if you have daughters you simply must look at all the incredibly pretty new dresses instore.  We’re talking brands like BIG by Fiona Scanlan, Three Little Trees, Baobab and Ivy Designs.  There really is something there for every girl, whether she loves to lounge around in comfy gear (in which case she’s a Baobab girl) or dress up in pretty frills (hello BIG by Fiona), is a modern miss (Three Little Trees is right up her alley) or has a penchant for vintage (Ivy Designs couldn’t be more perfect).

Don’t worry if, like me, you’re a mum of boys – there’s plenty instore for them too. Bonds has some great new sets for little lads – the Bonds Stretchies are wardrobe staples in my house, but do go up a size when ordering.  Ouch have fab tees and shorts for everyone’s taste, plus Small Paul and Well Spotted have done some great new tees too.  I particularly like the new ‘green themed’ Well Spotted organic tees – cool and topical, he’ll create a stir when he wears these!

Looking for something to top off your son’s outfit?  The range of hats from Goorin Kids has me drooling; it’s incredibly hip and there are so many that I want for my boy it’s just not funny!  I’m currently tossing up between the Lil Buddy Straw Cowboy Hat and the Baby Oliver Plaid Fedora.  Perhaps I’ll just get both…

I’ve had the most fun today choosing the my top picks of new summer stock at Baby’s Got Style ww.babysgotstyle.com.au – although I must say that it’s been an incredibly tough task: there’s so much to love that it’s more a case of what to leave out!

By now I shouldn’t be surprised to find lots of divine new products each time I browse through Baby’s Got Style – www.babysgotstyle.com.au.  After all, Daniela and the team have been at the absolute forefront of the Australian kidswear industry since 2004, and it’s for very good reason that their popularity is still growing exponentially. And yet, every time I visit the BGS website I am surprised and delighted to find new and gorgeous things which make me look twice, and three times, and *four* times!

Today’s examples are bound to get you fired up too: take Story-Time toys for example.  Crafted from natural materials, these toys will get your kids engaged and having fun in no time flat.  The cardboard castles are a bargain at $29.95ea, and will give hours and hours and hours of entertainment, what with the decorating and imaginative play that they’ll inspire.  I also love the wooden paddle sets – see Red Riding Hood at no. 3 below – and the play sets for littlies are just too cute to be true.

There’s always something new and hot in the clothing section, and this brings me to Coco & Ginger, the Bali-based newcomer to BGS and maker of some seriously cute dresses for little girls.  The great thing about the Coco & Ginger dresses is that they’re perfect for summer, but Daniela, with her sophisticated eye for styling, has told me that they also layer incredibly well with the Ouch Gather Neck Skivvies and tights for winter.  And once your little princess has put on a growth spurt, they’d look just as cute as a top with jeans!

For the boys, I’m digging the long-sleeve tee and jeans look this winter, and there’s a plethora of options to browse through here.  Some of my favourite brands for boys’ tops this season are BLINK designs, Little Horn (the Not The Messiah tee cracks me up; anything with a Monty Python reference is good by me!), and Rock Your Baby.  Layer any short-sleeve tee that takes your fancy with a plain long-sleeve tee – the Bonds Basics one is a good option, and so is the Ouch Grandpa Top in soot stripe.

Jeanswise, it’s difficult to go past Rock Your Baby this season, but there are also some excellent jeans from Oobi, mine by Kayla, Ouch, and some sweet little baby jeans from Purebaby.

Winter is creeping up on us, and it’s time to start thinking about warm, woolly things to snuggle up in during the colder months. Luckily all the top kidswear designers are waaaay ahead of us in this department, as hitting the stores right now is a spectacular and vibrant selection of woollens and knits to keep the kids toasty warm!

I’m loving the chunky knits from Eternal Creation – the colours, the detailing, the fact that they’re all hand-knitted under fair trade conditions; there’s a lot to love about these pieces.  They’re also at 15% off until 8th May, so if you get in quickly you might be able to nab the kids a bargain!

Although there’s loads out there for knits, my other personal favourites are Little Amigos, Polka and Oobi.  The designers for all three brands have all kept true to their brand’s ‘feel’ while still bringing a fresh and fun take to winter kidswear – any of these will go down a treat, you may be sure.

Hats are an essential piece of winter equipment for children, and there’s absolutely no need to go towards the boring end of the scale here.  My picks this winter are the adorable knitted hats from Rock Your Baby (pictured below at nos 6 & 7), and the Blabla character knit hats are seriously adorable too.  Besides those, anything with at least one pompom is good by me – see Oobi and Purebaby for more examples of these.

Now just before I sign off, let me talk to you for a second about merino wool, specifically merino wool products made in New Zealand.

Besides all the obvious jokes I could make about kiwis and sheep (trust me, I’ve heard them all!), I have to say, merino wool kidswear is one thing the kiwis do very, very well.  I lived in New Zealand for several years until recently so was able to experience it firsthand, and the quality and feel of the merino items there is second to none; silky, incredibly fine, luxurious and yet amazingly tough.  My son’s merino tops just get flung in the washing machine and they come out perfectly every time with no special treatment.

The top brands for merino kidswear are Mokopuna (now stocked at Metro Mum) and Merino Kids, and Nature Baby do an excellent merino line too.
