……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Breast cancer.  Two words which send shivers down my spine. It’s real. It affects so many Australian women and their families every day. We all know, or know of someone, who it has directly affected, and indirectly it touches us all.

Today is Pink Ribbon Day, the Australian Cancer Council’s major fundraising activity to raise money and awareness for women affected by cancer, and to draw attention to the importance of early detection.

Pastel Pink- www.pastelpink.com.au – is supporting the cause all this week and will donate $1.00 from every order placed until midnight 31 October 2009. By supporting this initiative you’ll also receive 20% off store wide and FREE pink gift! Enter the code ‘KSF-PINK’ at checkout to redeem.

If you’re in need of booties for your little one take special note of the new SKEANIE ‘Love me’ shoes. These shoes were especially designed for the McGrath Foundation, which supports breast care nurses in rural and regional Australia and educates young women to be breast cancer aware, so when your little blossom wears these shoes, not only will she look stunning, but she will be helping others.

All orders that include the SKEANIE Love Me shoes will automatically receive free shipping on the total order until midnight 31 October 2009.

There’s a huge range of fashion, toys, and accessories to choose from for babies, boys and girls, as well as yummy goodies for mums too (jewellery, bags, throws and toiletries) in all the colours of the rainbow, but the colour of the week is most certainly pink so I have prepared a spectrum of shades for your perusal.

Happy 1st Birthday Tiny Steps! 20% off store-wide for KSF Readers: Pedoodles, Pediped, diddledumpling, Annabel Trends, Sweet Shoes, Old Soles, Rileyroos & more

Posted: June 2nd, 2009

Today’s post brought to you by self-confessed kids shoe addict, Miki

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Tiny Steps – www.tinysteps.com.au – is ONE YEAR OLD!  Hip hip hooraaaaay!!!

I’m fairly well known for my kids’ shoe fetish by now, and Fiona at Tiny Steps has been just a bit too helpful in facilitating my addiction.  You see, she stocks the best of the best in shoes for under-twos – absolutely brilliant given how hard it normally is to find good shoes for toddlers as anyone with a little one will know.

A lot of vitally important foot development goes in in the early years, and that’s why I am willing to go out of my way to make sure my kids only wear quality footwear, shoes which won’t muck around with their tootsies.  The great thing about Tiny Steps, though, is that I don’t have to go out of my way – Fiona is a dream to deal with as far as customer service goes (I’m a repeat customer; take it from me) and she is careful to only stock brands which are good for little feet. Makes for an incredibly easy, fun shopping experience, vastly preferable to trying to go shoe shopping with a toddler!

The new brands at Tiny Steps are just too cute and I can’t wait to try them out.  Have a look at Rileyroos, a US brand, for a combination of European design inspiration and American toughness.  I absolutely adore their MJs in tweed (no. 11 below), and the Kane boots for boys (no. 4) are fab – it’s hard to find decent boots for little boys, so I’m especially pleased to see these!

Old Soles is another great new brand in store.  Designed by Australian Vicki Lever, the shoes come with a leather sole in the pre-walker sizes – we all know by now that leather soles are great for babies when barefoot isn’t an option – while the ‘first steps’ sizes for new walkers have a non-slip sole.  They’re also gorgeous to look at: the jogger styles for boys are trendy and practical, and the cowboy-tipped MJs for girls are seriously cool.

Now because of the first birthday celebrations, Fiona has generously decided to give KidStyleFile readers a hefty 20% discount store-wide, including sale items!!  Enter ‘WEAREONE’ at checkout to redeem; code expires 30 June 2009.

My credit card won’t thank you, Fiona, but I certainly do!! ;)

The prices below include the KSF 20% discount. Enter ‘WEAREONE’ at checkout. Code expires 30 June 2009.

1. Old Soles Hip Hop Jogger, $49.95 $39.96
2. Old Soles St Tropez – Pink,
$49.95 $39.96

I Want Fabulous 20% of Store-wide: Fabulous Fashion, Fabulous Bargains! Danefae, UBANG Babblechat, Urban Elk, MALA, Toetum, Baobab & More Red Hot Brands

………………………………………………………………………………………………

There’s something really thrilling for me about discovering a new store on the kidswear scene, it gives me a thrill each and every time as I dive in to make wonderful new discoveries. I have been lucky enough to do so today: ladles and jellyspoons, allow me present to you the oh-so-fabulous new store, I Want Fabulous – www.iwantfabulous.com.au.

As soon as I hit upon I Want Fabulous I was hooked, and if you look at their list of brands you will understand why!  Knowledgable and fashion-savvy Katie at IWF stocks a fabulous (of course!) range of boutique Australian brands, including Toetum, baobab and Skeanie among other KSF faves, and she is also the exlusive stockist of some seriously cool overseas brands, like Scandinavian labels UBANG babblechat (their silly tights are pictured below, too cute!) and MALA, and Redfish Kids from Canada.

I have fallen particularly head over heels for Danish label Urban Elk. Their signature moose print can be found all over their pieces; FABULOUS! I’ve always had a bit of a thing for moose (mooses? moosi? moosums?) and this particular print has really grabbed my imagination.  Urban Elk also have an adorable dachshund print and next season’s collection will feature lions and ladybirds too!  Katie plans to stock their full range from next season, so keep your eyes peeled for new stock arrivals – this is a brand to watch; it has already developed quite a following, and is being snapped up fast at IWF.

While browsing at I Want Fabulous, be sure not to miss the Fabulous Seconds & Sales category.  In here you’ll find lasts-of-lines, and pieces which have minor imperfections (clearly stated so you can be sure of what you’re buying) at super-bargain prices.  It’s worth checking in often so that you don’t miss a cheap – and fabulous! – find.

Katie is giving KSF readers a special introductory offer to her wonderful store: take 20% off store-wide (excluding the Fabulous Seconds & Sales category) until 30 June 2009. Whoopee!!  Enter ‘KSF told me’ at checkout to score this fabulous discount. Enjoy!

Prices highlighted in red below are valid until 30 June 2009 with code ‘KSF told me’.

1. Elk Print Sweater by Urban Elk, $84.95 $67.96
2. Vintage Denim Karate Pants by Redfish Kids,

KidStyleFile Special Feature: Super Shoes for Little Feet

Posted: May 15th, 2009

Today’s post written by Miki

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Hi, my name’s Miki and I’m a self-confessed kids’ shoe addict.

I’m not alone: KSF readers Jodi and Melanie recently requested a post on shoes and boots for little feet, and I am more than happy to oblige! (In fact, I have been wanting an excuse to sit down and hunt out some awesome little shoes as my son (nearly two) has just grown out of his last pair of Pedipeds and his Walnuts are still too big for him – and that’s not as rude as it sounds!)

So, where to begin?  Well, with winter approaching it seems sensible to look for boots – after all, we mums love to wear our boots in winter so who’s to say that the kids don’t too?  Luckily there are boots galore in all sorts of sizes to suit all sorts of ages, and both girls and boys.  Have a look at the image collage below for some of my faves.

Sneakers are always a goer regardless of your child’s age or gender.  Take them anywhere, do anything in them; they can be teamed with the girliest of tutus or the most macho jeans and shirts you can imagine.  I think every child should have at least one or two pairs of sneakers!

Don’t forget that babies and young toddlers should be in soft-soled shoes until several months after walking has been established. Plenty of research shows that babies’ feet develop best when they learn to walk barefoot, and soft soled shoes are a good alternative where bare feet just aren’t practical.  The soft little leather shoes from brands such as Robeez, Star Child, Beautiful Soles and Skeanie are also great for protecting crawlers’ feet.

Well without further ado, here are my picks for the cutest kids’ shoes and boots this season! Enjoy!

1. Baby Chick Pink Boots, $95.00 from Kounia-Bella
2. Luxurious Cream Loafers, $49.95 from Skeanie
3. Morgan & Milo LTT Oxford – Red/Orange,
$44.95 $39.95 from Where Did You Get That?
4. Walnut Desert Boots – Navy, $59.95 from Urban Child
5. LelliKelly Iris Laces Sequinned Boots,
$114.00 $109.95 from Where Did You Get That?
6. Beautiful Soles Silver Rock Star Baby Shoe,
$39.90 $29.95 from Bubba Funk
7. Star Child Cherry Baby, $39.95 from Chic Kids
8. Scandeez Baby Leather Brown Moks,
$35.00 $21.00 from Soda Pop Kids
9. Walnut Mary Janes – French Navy Spot, $29.95 from Urban Child
10. Samvara Navaho Cowboy Boot – Chocolate, $114.00 from Bubba Funk
11. Fire Engine Red Boots, $39.95 from Skeanie
12. Robeez Guitar Soft-Soled Baby Shoes, $57.00 from Kounia-Bella
13. Jack & Lily Love Birds – Chocolate, $54.95 from Little Styles

PS Polka also make a gorgeous girl’s boot, the Mika-Lu, which Ange’s girls have for this winter, for just $88.00. Hit up Raspberry Rascals to behold the goodness. Check sizing with them before your purchase.

As always, please check individual sites for postage details, and have a look at the KidStyleFile All Current Deals page to make sure you’re getting the best deal on your purchase.

Fair Trade Fortnight – Change the World, One Purchase at a Time

Posted: May 4th, 2009

Today’s post written by Miki

………………………………………………………………………………………………

Fair Trade Fortnight started yesterday, and the next couple of weeks will give us us even more reason than usual to contemplate where our purchases are coming from.

To not think about this aspect when buying an item – any item – is the equivalent of a child assuming that milk comes from the supermarket shelf as opposed to a cow.  Everything we buy is made, produced or handled by people somewhere in the world, and many of those people are appallingly exploited and work in conditions which would horrify us if only we could see them.

Luckily, the Fair Trade movement works to give people like this fair treatment, by paying a ‘fair price’ for their goods or services, and by monitoring their social and working conditions.

As the FairTrade.com.au website explains:
“Fair Trade is about giving disadvantaged people power: by paying producers and workers fair prices for their work, by helping them gain the skills and knowledge they need to develop their businesses and to operate in the global economy, and by challenging unfair trading practices. It is about providing fair go, not charity.”

There are plenty of easy ways for us to support the Fair Trade movement.  I now buy only Fair Trade coffee, for example; it’s on the supermarket shelves and I’m more than happy to pay an extra dollar or two to make a difference to people’s lives.  And Ange and I can both testify that Fair Trade chocolate is absolutely delicious ;)

It’s easy to outfit your kids with Fair Trade clothes and gear too, and it’s never too early to start teaching them about social responsibility.  Check out some of these gorgeous examples, and click on the links below the images to go to some wonderful stores selling Fair Trade kids fashions and toys.

1. Lark Designs Knitted Fleur Tortoise, $55.00 from Lark Designs
2. Purebaby Knitted Dress, $59.95 from Purebaby
(NB: Purebaby clothes are not officially Fair Trade, but they are registered with Made-By which works to similar principles)
3. Rock Babies Salt Crystal Lamp,
$19.95 $18.00 from Anklebiters Duds
4. Eternal Creation Overalls, $59.95 from Eternal Creation
5. Fire Engine Red Boots, $39.95 from Skeanie
6. Wooden Fruit Basket, $21.95 from Mudd Kids
7. Romantic Ballerina Dress by Piccalilly, $46.95 from Generation Wonder
8 Lion & Friends Finger Puppets, NZD$19.00 from Finger Puppet Heaven
(this is a New Zealand site, but they post cheaply to Australia and the exchange rate is on your side!)

Please check individual sites for postage details, and as always, check the KidStyleFile ‘All Current Deals’ page to ensure you’re getting the most bang for your buck!

Meet & Greet: A Moment with Natasha Barber from SKEANIE Shoes

Posted: February 17th, 2009

Today I’d like you to meet Natasha Barber from SKEANIE Shoes – www.skeanie.com. I first met Natasha at a tradeshow and was bowled over by her statuesque beauty, and vivacious passion for her product, which is wildly infectious!

Natasha has gone from a fast-paced city existence to running her burgeoning business from her home in Goulburn: more proof that you don’t have to be a city-dweller to make it in the design world.

Besides being incredibly cute, SKEANIE shoes are foot friendly and fair trade made so you can be sure that no-one has suffered – or will suffer! – for this fashion.

Natasha lives in Goulburn, NSW, with her husband, Hamilton, son Hamish, 3 years, daughter Bella, 1 year, and their two Jack Russell Terriers Oliver and Molly – interviewed by Angela.

For stores and buyers reading this, you can meet Natasha and see the new season’s SKEANIE range at the trade-only Life INSTYLE/Kids INSTYLE show in Sydney this week.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

What was your life like before SKEANIE?

Up until 2003 I was an IT Project Manager in Sydney looking after projects for Cisco, Ericsson, Telstra, Vodafone and Hutchison. It was a pretty hectic existence!

Hamilton and I married in Noosa Heads in 2003, and shortly after we decided to move to Goulburn, where Hamilton’s parents live, and where we now live on an acreage close to town. I ran a Mortgage Broking/Financial Planning business until Hamish was born in 2005.

After becoming a mother I realised that working in an office 5 days a week was not for me, so I sold the Mortgage Broking business and ventured into the wonderful world of SKEANIE: Leather Footwear for Little Feet!

Who and/or what inspires you?

I am inspired by my children, the country, my husband and classic style. I love well made, classic items. Classic style is more important to me than the latest fashions. I tend to design items that I would like to wear, only they are smaller!

Describe your perfect day

A perfect day would have lots of variety, be full of surprises and not much would go to plan. Fortunately for me, being a mother of 2 young children and a business owner most of my days end up being perfect ones!

What are SKEANIE’s best-sellers?

The Cheeky Monkey and Little Princess designs have both been big sellers. I think perhaps this is because Mum’s can relate to them. I am forever calling my children quirky little names. Most of them have ended up on our shoes!

Summer Sandals were a huge hit this summer. I think they sold well because they were unique, there was nothing like them in the market.

Who are your favourite baby and kids designers?

Heavenly Creatures – www.heavenlycreatures.net.au. Heidi and Kelly are 2 talented women from Melbourne who definitely have a flair for style!

Knuffle Kid – www.knufflekid.com. Emma specialises in vintage for young girls. I just love the dress pictured below which I have for my daughter, Bella.

What’s coming up for SKEANIE?

I am really excited about the SKEANIE winter range which is due out next month. The SKEANIE leather loafers were influenced by the “Gucci Driving Shoe”. They are a smaller version of shoes I wear, I guess a kind-of “mini-me”. My husband is an avid horse-man; hence the snaffle-bit on the loafers. They are hand-made from high-quality leather and feature a thin rubber sole which makes them ideal for the transition from pre-walker to walker.

The Faux-fur lined cowboy boots are influenced by my life in the country and boots that I wear, again another “mini-me”. Unfortunately mine are not faux-fur lined or not nearly as comfortable!

The plain faux-fur lined boots have been extended to include “luxurious cream”: a great colour for boys or girls. Bella has recently started wearing her “Fire Engine Red” boots (coming to the SKEANIE online store in March) around the house to keep her little feet warm on the timber floors in Goulburn.

SKEANIE charge from $7.20 shipping within Australian and New Zealand. Click to shop at SKEANIE Shoes.

Here’s a surefire winner for your baby’s first Christmas stocking: a pair of the sweetest little soft leather baby shoes from Skeanie-www.skeanie.com.

These are a great gift idea as they’re a) so cute and b) so practical – your little one’s toes will be comfortable in the buttery-soft leather and they’ll look adorable to boot!  I love the range of classic and cheeky designs that Skeanie have to offer, there’s something for everyone’s taste.

For newborns and older babies who aren’t yet on the move, Skeanies are lovely booties.  The 100% leather makes them breathable and they’re so soft that even the most delicate baby toes will love them.

For crawlers Skeanies are even better as they protect the top of your baby’s feet from being grazed, bruised or carpet-burned as they charge around on all fours exploring the world.  And my goodness can crawling babies move fast!

For babies about to take their first steps Skeanies are better still as with their soft soles they won’t hamper your little one’s attempts to walk.  Podiatrists all say that bare feet is best for new walkers, and these are surely the closest thing while still protecting that precious little foot!

Now, as a final note, I recommend checking out the Clearance Stock section as it’s full of bargains.  Every little shoe in there has been marked down by 33% from $29.95 to $19.95!  At this price you can definitely afford to add an extra pair to your basket, and there’s a wonderful range of sizes too.

Take advantage of the gift wrapping too: FREE with all full-priced items and just $2 for sale stock. The cut-off for Christmas delivery is Friday December 18, so chop chop now!
