‘Twas the Night Before Christmas: A Christmas Eve Poem

Well here we are: it’s Christmas Eve! It’s time to hang up the stockings and invoke the magic of Christmas, and there is no better way to do it than through a recital of this iconic poem. May your day go well and well-wishes to you all. May Santa stuff your stocking brim-full tonight!

A Visit From St. Nicholas

By: Clement C. Moore, first published 23rd December 1823

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;
And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,
With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On Cupid! On, Donder and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes — how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

Under Our Tree: Annie’s Christmas Picks

Posted: December 10th, 2009

Today’s post written by Annie

………………………………………………………………………………………………

I’m incredibly excited about Christmas this year. Last year was our first Christmas as a family, but at 6 weeks old Jessica was only interested in the flashing lights on the tree. At one year old, she might not even fully understand what is going on this year, but I’m sure she will be thrilled by a collection of new toys presented in our wish list below.

1.  Jumbo Cubes Baby Walker – Anything that helps our little angel get about the house is a blessing right now. This should do the trick and blocks are always a hit.
2.  Pig Felt Hand Puppet – I love this puppet. It’s cute and I know she’ll love it.
3.  Flower Bead Maze – You see toys like this in every doctors surgery and the children always love them. I’m hoping something like this will keep little fingers out of trouble (and our DVD player) for a little while.
4.  Milly, Molly & Mandy Tambourines – Our house is full of music, dancing and singing. These tambourines would be perfect for banging on or shaking (and they might just cover up some of my bad singing).
5.  PuzzlesPuzzles are another one of those toys that will last forever and there are so many to choose from. I really like the First Shapes Puzzle.
6.  Butterfly Garden Hair Clips – Check these out! They have some beautiful Christmas hair clips and pins. There are snowmen, reindeer, trees, snowflakes and many other things to choose from. There is something to go with any Christmas outfit.
7.  Ellie Bellie Kids – Reversible Tutu – I can’t help myself. I love dressing Jessica up in pretty pink frilly things and I’ve been eyeing these up for months. I think Christmas is the perfect time to stop admiring from afar and actually buy one.
8.  Whizz Down Mountain – Cars, trucks and buses are favourites in our house at the moment so this will be great. Watch the cars go whizzing down the mountain road and then send boulders chasing down after them. Now I love a bargain as much as the next person so I am extra excited knowing that until the 24th December 2009 (or whilst stocks last) Kids Central are throwing in the Emergency Service Centre worth $47.50 for free when you buy the Whizz Down Mountain.
9.  Tricycle – What 1 year olds wish list would be complete without a tricycle? Our independent little girl is tired of being in the pram so Santa will hopefully be leaving one of these under the tree. This one comes with all the usual things you would expect but also has side mirrors, music, horn and a siren with flashing lights.
10. The Magic Klorofil Tree – The minute I saw this, memories of my childhood came flooding back. I rang my mother straight away and she couldn’t believe that I remembered having one of these myself. I would love one for Jessica. She might not be quite old enough to appreciate it yet but I will happily appreciate it for her until she gets there.

1. Jumbo Cubes Baby Walker, $149.95 at The Infant Boutique
2. Pig Felt Hand Puppet, $18.50 at Eco Toys
3. Flower Bead Maze Wooden Toy, $27.95 $24.95 at My Wooden Toys
4. Milly Molly Mandy Tambourines, $14.95 at Midgee Moo
5. First Shapes Puzzle, $21.95 at The Toy Bug
6. Snowflake Hair Clip, $3.85 at Butterfly Garden
7. Ellie Bellie Kids – Reversible Tutu, $69.99 at Metro Mum
8. Whizz Down Mountain, $85.00 at Kids Central
9. Tricycle (Model No: F-7938B), $134.95 at Just Trikes
10. The Magic Klorofil Tree, $195 at The Infant Boutique

Growing Up Green Presents: The KidStyleFile Green Guide Christmas 2009

Posted: December 7th, 2009

Today’s post written by Raquel

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Today I’m pleased to bring you the Christmas 2009 issue of The KidStyleFile Green Guide, your source of eco and environmentally, as well as kid, friendly baby and kids gear. It’s easy to be green this Xmas – enjoy!

The Green Guide is brought to you on the first Monday of each month by expert in the field Raquel, from Growing Up Green (affectionately dubbed ‘GUG’), the Australian authority on modern eco options for kids.

1. Your baby boy or girl may not know the words yet, but bubs will be able to put the jingle in jingle bells thanks to these pretty Rainbow Sound Blocks. Made from sustainable rubberwood each jewel like block is filled with different sized beads creating a sound sensation that’ll keep them amused without sending you scampering for some ear protection.

2. Who better to comfort and protect your child during the night than the King of the Jungle? The only thing that feels better than cuddling up to this charmingly cute Kenana Critter is knowing he’s been lovingly hand knitted from pure wool by a fair trade cooperative of Kenyan woman.

3. Need some stocking fillers? My ‘sure hit’ tip is Honey Sticks deliciously scented beeswax crayons. For only $12.95 the divine smelling and chubby (read unbreakable) sticks are novel and useful, best of all they’re loved by children!

4. These candy bright, tactically delightful numbers from Rubbabu have tot appeal you can count on. Made from the sap of rubber trees, the soft, squishy toys will intrigue curious little fingers; plus they’re naturally safe, which of course all adds up to a fab gift idea.

5. Little girls will burst with glee when they spy En Gry Sif’s gorgeous house bag under the tree! The exceptionally made 100% New Zealand wool bag is a perfectly whimsical addition to her day that’ll travel from play date to movie date, carrying all her special treasures along the way.

6. Pressies don’t come much cuter than these adorable Mumma & Baby Bushka sets. As gorgeous as they are unique, the heirloom quality pieces are handcrafted from vintage and recycled fabrics and double as both play dolls and décor pieces.

7. The perfect pad for throwing a party, Wonderworld’s wooden doll house is fully kitted with all the eco features a modern house miss would expect: solar panels, wind turbine and a bicycling family of three. Best of all you won’t need to take out a mortgage to buy it.

8. Gorgeously styled in a dreamy soft organic cotton sprinkled with flowers, this blue vision from cornflowerblue ORGANIC is the dress for skipping and twirling through sun kissed days .. all that’s needed is a lovely eco princess to bring it to life.

9. Trying to ‘break into’ over packaged toys and messing around with batteries is the bane of many a parent’s Xmas day. Thank goodness then for Ecotronic’s fab range of wind up toys like this neat, fully functioning radio. Funkily styled with a football for boys and heart for girls, it even includes phone charging accessories that’ll win it extra kudos with mobile toting tweens.

10. This 6 in 1 Robot Kit features three key ideas that’s gonna grab kid’s imagination: robot, solar powered, transforming! The high tech profile and fun utility of a Robot Pup that converts from a dog to a boat, windmill, plane, desktop plane and car will be a hit with Gen Z. Plus, there’s something to be said for a dog that you don’t have to clean up after.

11. When it comes to super slick cars this E-Racer is a clear race winner with a beautifully sleek form matched by an equally impressive eco profile. Made from earth friendly bamboo the only thing kids need to fuel this battery free toy is lots of enthusiasm.

12. These hip recycled rubber wrist bands come with clip in letters, numbers and icons so kids can create their own custom made arm candy just the way they like it. The funky bands come in every colour from urban black to pretty pink and are the perfect adaptable fashion accessory for your shape shifting charge.

Merry Christmas!

Under Our Tree: Edwina’s Christmas List

Posted: December 4th, 2009

Today’s post written by Edwina

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Christmas time at our place is all about the boys. We have 3 gorgeous sons aged 8, 6 and nearly 3, so I am always on the look out for stimulating and fun toys that they will love and I will enjoy looking at.

In an effort to get organised I have been cruising the net looking for cool things to cross off the list.

My ‘nearly 3′ seems to be getting more and more active every day so first thing on my list for him is the truly unique Bilibo. Requiring no batteries and no instructions this is an open-ended toy designed to stimulate the imagination and improve motor skills (read Angela’s review of the Bilibo here).

Also on the list is the Oobi Hopper, perfect for bouncing out all the excess energy after lunch, some Pirates for the bath tub, and because he is currently in love with Spot the Dog, a few new Spot books for bedtime.

Mister 6 seems to be easiest to buy for this time, he loves indoor games and is a natural at making his own imaginary games with toys and Lego. This year I have a theme going on and it is all about Knights, Castles, Legends and Chivalry. Hopefully he will enjoy playing in these worlds and maybe one day he will grow up to be a knight in shining armour himself! My favourite finds are this castle these dragon stencils and knights stickers, and these Schleich knight figurines.

My 8 year old is definitely an outdoor kid – he loves sports – and is very into science: he is currently planning to be an ‘insect scientist’ and have his own ‘insect room’ in his future imaginary mansion.

I was recently chatting to a friend who is a Steiner teacher and she was telling me that at around age 8 they start to teach children construction and building things, which helps them gain confidence in their ability to become more independent. With this in mind I am heading off to the hardware store to pick up a tool box with some real tools and everything he needs to build a billy-cart or a box.

Also for my eldest son is this cute Dumpling Dynasty Explorer Kit, and “Blast Lab” Why Don’t Insects Get Fat?‘ – sure to be a winner based on the title alone -  a fact-book-with-insects written by Richard ‘Hamster’ Hammond from Top Gear Fame.

For my gratification our tree will this year be adorned with some new handmade and fair trade Christmas decorations from Lark, and under it will sit some cool vintage inspired Santa Sack from Cocoon Couture to hold all the loot. And because I’m a kid at heart, I’ve selected Eloise: the Ultimate Edition book just for me. Can’t wait to tear it open on the big day…

1. Oobi Hopper, Paperartzi Boutique – $29.95 $28.95
2. Alex Toys’ Pirates in the Tub, Ten Little Indians – $28.95
3. Spot Bakes a Cake, Fishpond Books – $14.99 $13.95
4. Active People Bilibo, Metro Mum – $39.00
5. Djeco Knights Stickers, Where Did You Get That? – $4.95
6. Le Toy Van, My First Castle, Growing Brains Educational Toys – POA
7. Djeco Dragon Stencils, Where Did You Get That? – $12.95 $10.95
8. “Blast Lab” Why Don’t Insects Get Fat?, Fishpond Books – $17.95 $14.95
9. Dumpling Dynasty Explorer Kit, ShopHouse – $29.95
10. Tools and tool box – your local hardware store
11. Cocoon Couture Santa Sack, Little Pinwheel – $54.95
