Baobab AW10 Collection Launch: Colour Bursts & Shape Shifters – Free Postage Offer

Today’s post written by Angela

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

It’s almost March – the official start of Autumn – and the days are slowly becoming shorter and colder, heralding the start of the new season.

I used to mourn the passing of the warmer seasons, but since I had children I relish each and every moment of the colder months for their unique pleasures. The release of the Autumn/Winter collections are a major thrill to me. It is such a treat to unveil them and take in the interpretations of the season and behold the colours and textures that will carry us through the chilly days, and today I am pleased today to be able to offficially launch the  Autumn/Winter 2010 collection of one of Australia’s most luminous baby and kids designers, Baobab – www.baobab.com.au.

This season Baobab designer Belinda Blooman delivers a standout collection of skirts, tees, hoodies and pants for babies and boys and girls from birth to 10 years (tween Mums, your call has been heard!). Taking her signature cotton jersey fabric, Blooman keeps the cuts classic, while bringing her unique eye to the details – extending the line of the classic grandpa shirt, playing with pockets – a mix of concealed, circular and oversized – and  her use of colour and print, which include bursts of regal purple, fuschia, pale red, lilac, grass green, sky blue and charcoal grey, is once again dynamic and inspiring.

I can’t get enough of Baobab: these pieces make it easy to dress your kids in style and comfort every day, with wash-and-wear sensibility and price points that please – all pieces are between $34-$50.00.

If you’re a regular KidStyleFile reader (a warm welcome if you’re new to the scene; you’ll love it and end up addicted just like the rest of us!!) you be well aware that it’s no secret that brand Baobab – www.baobab.com.au is a favourite for most of the KSF mums. And today I get to throw my two bobs worth in and say “me too, me too!”

So why is it a fav?  I love Baobab for the beautiful simplicity in design because my kids look adorable in it and it’s so wearable.

This summer both my boys have both worn their  Racer Shorts time and time again.  They look funky and so comfortable  that my husband dubbed them their “lounge pants” (though please do tell me if you’ve found a way to get boyish-boys to do any form of lounging!!) These shorts, and matching Racer tees, have well and truly been put to the test and after many park and beach trips, plus the countless hours of backyard antics; I’m please to report they have stood up to the test and still look great.

In celebration of the new year and their new look website, Baobab is on sale up to 50% off, plus the delightful proprietor Belinda, is offering KSF readers a special offer of FREE shipping Australia-wide on all orders over $100. When you are in the ‘My cart’ section at checkout, simply enter code ‘SHIPFREE‘ in the coupon box to redeem your free shipping. This offer is valid until 1 February 2010, while stocks last only.

Best buys for girls are some of the cutest dresses ever! My favourites are the Lilac Bow Dress the Red Raglan Dress and the Pink Tulle Dress. Plus you simply must check out the Tulle Skirt. This little number offers a whole lot of style for the very low sale price of $29.40. If it’s stylish enough for one Miss Cruise, it’s certainly stylish enough for me!

For boys you can’t beat the Racer Shorts and they work well teamed with any of the great print tees.

For babies I love the Kimono Hoodies and the Bodysuits. If you have a baby girl check out the outfit pictured below of the Pink Bodysuit teamed with the Baby Girl Comfy Shorts: sweet huh?!

There is one Australian brand which absolutely epitomises summer to me.  The prints, the colourways, the free and easy cut of the pieces; it all says ‘family day at the beach’ or ‘chasey at the playground’ or ‘barbeque in the back yard’ to me.  After all, summers are the cornerstone of an Australian childhood – who wouldn’t love a clothing line which sums it up so well?

The brand I’m talking about is, of course, none other than Baobab – www.baobab.com.au – designed by Belinda Blooman originally for her daughter, and now for all Aussie kids right up to age six (and parents – Baobab gear is super-easy to wash and wear).

My kids’ wardrobes feature a heck of a lot of Baobab gear.  I love the simple, striking prints, the soft stretch cotton, the quality of workmanship and how great it looks after a quick eco-wash, even after run the pre-school gauntlet (think play doh, marker pens, paint, mud and glitter glue).  It’s very giftable too, and more than one of my friends’ new babies has received a Baobab outfit on arrival.

The new Baobab website has just had a makeover in time for Christmas, with a bit of brightening up and tweaking to make it sleeker and easier to use.  The navigation is now incredibly intuitive, and beautiful pieces just about jump out of the screen at you, making it easier than ever to choose the ones that will perfectly suit your child.  Or why not sit them down on your lap in front of the computer and get them to help you choose?

There are also some fantastic bargains to be had with up to 30% off in the sale section, plus take advantage of the Specials & Sets section, where buying co-ordinating pieces can also save you around 30%!

To celebrate the new site and the run up to Christmas, Belinda at Baobab is currently offering *FREE Express Post shipping Australia-wide on all orders until 24 December 2009. Proceed to the ‘My Cart’ section at checkout to redeem your ‘free express shipping’ with the special discount code ‘SANTA’.

In the world of fashion, the changing of the seasons is always something to celebrate. Whether it be the transition from autumn into winter, which brings with it exciting new interpretations of what it means to stay warm and look good, or the eagerly anticipated turn from from winter into spring, heralding the warmth and lightness to come, the coming of new season’s collections brings with it an infectious energy as new styles and colour palettes replace and update those which came before them.

The spring/summer ‘09-’10 lookbook for Australian label Baobab – www.baobab.com.au – has just hit my desk, and I just couldn’t wait to share it with you.

Putting me in mind of long tall glasses of home-made lemonade, clear blue skies, and fresh cut grass, Belinda Blooman’s new collection of printed and cleverly detailed cotton jersey pieces in a lemony-lime and pink and blue pastel palette, punctuated with Baobab’s signature true red, delivers a large dose of freshness, together with an unfussy, simple sophistication that unmistakably says ’summer’.

The Baobab spring/summer ‘09-’10 collection for babies from birth and boys and girls up to 6 years, will be available from the Baobab website, and from stockists nationally, from 1 August 2009. Stand in line to snap it up!

Autumn/Winter ‘09 Fashion Roundup – Hot Picks of the New Season

Posted: March 13th, 2009

………………………………………………………………………………………………

It’s that time of year again…summer is being cleared out to make way for my personal fave fashion season – the cosy knits and gorgeous jackets of Autumn/Winter ‘09! Here’s part one of our sneak peek at what some of our fav labels are offering, with everything trickling into stores as we speak (well, read):

Oobi

I know this is a firm favourite with all you loyal KSF-ers, and you can view their new season collection on their website right now, with stockists including Baby’s Got Style, ShopHouse, and Urban Child. I admit we’ve already indulged a little, with the cute hooded Owl Print dress (very Scandinavian) and the print also comes in Hoodies! They’ve also redone the popular Cord Dresses – this season’s addition is Red – and the eternally cute Little Bear Hoodie Jackets (hoods with ears, bless) in navy/red stripe. Other notable pieces include the Cable Knit Cardis and beautiful Cord Peacoats (navy or red). Yes folks, classic-cute dressing with quirky modern touches just doesn’t get better than this!

Eeni Meeni Miini Moh

The exquisite designs of EMMM are available right now at Kounia Bella, with a huge selection from newborn to tween sizes. For girls, the Marshmallow Trench ($129) gets two very enthusiastic thumbs-up (you can never be too young to learn about a classic cut!), as does the Gauge Knit Dress ($99) and the Balloon Dress ($84) for a little-girl look that’s big on style. Boys can work their tres cool Grass Stain Jeans ($94) with a rockstar Stripe Scarf ($39)  and matching Tshirt (from $51); while little people are spoiled for choice – cover up in the funkiest jumpsuits around ($69), keep warm in a long-sleeved romper ($44) or team a sweet babydoll dress ($49) with knitted tights and a beanie for warmth and style! And don’t forget their adorable bibs and blankies…

Baobab

Belinda Blooman’s label just keeps getting better and better. There’s a cool new Racer print this season, which looks awesome on their thoughtfully designed Kimono Hoodies ($45.95) and Hoody Tees ($47.95) – choose from baby blue, red or a lovely warm chocolate brown. New tee prints include a Plane and funky racing car ($37.95ea), while the ever poopular girl’s long sleeved dresses have a pretty bow or come covered in the Racer print ($45.95ea) - with some patterned tights and a big chunky knit cardi they will just look superb!

Bebe by Minihaha

My daughter is too ‘growned-up’ for this beautiful label now, but that doesn’t stop my endless cooing over it…this season, I fell in love with the Tatum Cord Dress ($49.95; there’s also an adorable romper in the same print for $38.95) for it’s girly ribbon detail and whimiscal mishmash of print. I pondered it for a long time before it was time to admit that size 2 was just not going to fit my rapidly growing tot *sigh*. Anyway, you can view other coo-worthy pieces on their website, with stockists including Ekidna Kids, The Fairy Jardin and Pastel Pink. The Denim Multi Print Pinafore and Chelsea Double Breasted Knit Cardigan all get my vote, while in the boy’s JR range, the Hunter Grandpa Tee is a cool classic, the Charcoal Stripe Lambswool Jumper looks as slick as it does cosy, and the Stripey l/s rompers with feet are just perfect for keeping little toes toasty all season!

In rows, top to bottom: Oobi, Eeni Meeni Miini Moh; Baobab, Bebe & JR.

*Not all styles available at all stockists; please contact individual retailers for details.

Part 2: Stay Cool – Summer Frocks at Hot Prices

Posted: February 13th, 2009

Today’s post written by Kat

Welcome to Part 2 of our ‘Stay Cool’l two-part summer fashion special. Today Kat gets her frock on to check out summer dresses for girls. Have a boy? check out Part 1: Boys Picks to keep your little man cool in the summer sun.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Whether you’re 2 or 32, there’s nothing quite like a breezy summer frock for just slipping into when the weather heats up. So, following on from last week’s post about hip buys for little dudes, this week it’s time for some girliness: KSF presents a rundown on the hottest frocks for keeping cool on sweltering summer days!

You may have noticed that here at KSF we rave about a brand called Daily Tea. If you haven’t tried it, I would highly recommend it – they’re beautifully made, the prints are simple and delightful, and they last wash after wash. They should come with a warning though; much like good tea, they are pleasantly addictive! You can browse a large array at Where Did You Get That?, including the Fan Flower Drop Waist Dress (on sale, $22.37), the Flower Dot Dress (on sale, $22.37), and the Floral Tank Dress (on sale, $18.55).

There’s yet even more Daily Tea available at Ele-ahbaant – check out the new season Cherry Blossoms Dress ($37.75) or the super cute vintage inspired Multi Dot Banded Dress ($37.75).

Another couple of my fave labels, Little Leona by Leona Edmiston and Big by Fiona Scanlan also now have online stores, yay! Check out the Sale section at the Leona Edmiston site for huge bargains for yourself and your little princess (who’ll look even more the part in the Talitha Tulle Dress , $79.95, sizes 1-7) and you can also keep tabs on new season stock without battling department store crowds. Also check Appleseed Child for out of this world bargains on Little Leona frocks.

The gorgeous Big by Fiona Scanlan site has all the new stuff as well as some beautiful summer and trans-seasonal frocks (just add tights and a skivvy for winter): I love the very pretty Petal Print Dress ($79.95, sizes 2-8) in the hottest hue of the season, navy, while the cool folk inspired (let’s not go near “foho”) Paisley Print Top ($64.95, sizes 2-8) would have a place in my wardrobe if it came in mummy-sizes!

Kounia-Bella stocks a huge ranges of gorgeous frocks from drool-worthy (yours as well as bub’s) labels such as Collette Dinnigan Enfant, Eeni Meeni Miini Moh, Ouch, Bebe by Minihaha, Tea Princess, Emilie et Rose…get a hanky for excess dribble ’cos they have a 40% off summer sale on…(eew, sorry)…this simple white pinny by Ouch would look great with a bright tee or tank (on sale, $19.61, sizes 1-7),  while at the other end of the scale, the Loletta dress by Collette Dinnigan Enfant ($180, 6-12 months) is a beautiful keepsake for generations of hot summers. Or, for the designer look without the price tag, grab the Bebe Junior by Minihaha White Lace Dress ($24 on sale) for a cute and cool (in every sense) girly look!

Over at Itty Bitty Yuppy, there’s no shortage of beautiful designer looks…at half the price on their bulging sale rack (woohoo!).  The Egg & Avocado June Dress (on sale, $38.97, sizes 2-6) just got added to my cart (I’m a sucker for hot pink, and my daughter is too young to complain about it), while the Freshbaked Summer Dress (on sale, $29.22, 3-6) is the most perfectly summery shade of blue. Mill & Mia fans, rejoice, because there’s 35% off beautiful pieces like the Stripe Tshirt Dresses (on sale, $45.47, sizes 1-6); or if you’re a fan of quirky retro prints, a Pink Chicken frock such as the Sasha Dress (on sale, $53.59, sizes 2-6) is just the ticket.

After something all natural (as opposed to au naturale, the under 5’s globally preferred style of choice)? Mini Eco stocks gorgeous organic garments, including the Lark Retro Baby Dress (on sale, $19, sizes 3m-12m) with it’s vintage print/modern design combo (result: super cute!), and this classic Polka Dot Dress (on sale, $25, sizes 12m-6y). Over at Purebaby you can pick up the organic Racer Back summer dress in Stripe or Gumnut (on sale, $22.46, sizes 000-2), while Pastel Pink stock a nice big range of Gaia Organics – check out the beautiful Prairie Feather Dress (on sale, $24.72, sizes 000-4)  or the pretty Rosebud Dress in pink or white (on sale, $19.98, sizes 000-0).

I could go on for years about frocks actually, but on a final note for today, you simply can’t go past Baobab for gorgeous basics and gorgeous bargains – the Tank Dresses (on sale, $33.60, sizes 1-6) are unbelievably stylish and breezy, in 4 colourways and prints (I’m a fan of the black, it looks truly wicked with a dash of pink accessory!); or the Raglan Striped Dress (on sale, $36.80, sizes 1-6) for some easy beachy-cool!

Please check individual sites for spostage and delivery details.

Meet & Greet: A Moment with Belinda Blooman from Baobab

Posted: January 20th, 2009

Today I’d like to introduce you Belinda Blooman, the beautiful ‘face’ behind great Australian baby and kids fashion label, Baobab.

Belinda has lived all over the world, and has been a fashion industry professional all her adult life. The combination of these experiences has culminated  in the freshness and uniqueness of Baobab.

Baobab is one of my personal favourite labels for my kids. Belinda is such a warm and energetic person, and she’s imbued her label with this spirit: the clothes are visually dynamic, and designed to be lived in with passion.

Belinda lives in Sydney with her muse – 6 year old daughter Anya.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Tell us a little about your background? How did you come to be a baby and kids fashion designer?

I have always been involved in fashion in one way or another. I remember skipping sport at school so I could hide away in the library and immerse myself in out-of-date issues of Paris Match and French Vogue!

In my ‘pre-Baobab’ existence I worked as a model (in my 20’s), followed by a stint in retail and buying  (for Versace and Prada), and a photographer’s agent and producer of fashion stills shoots. I’ve moved around a lot too; I lived in Japan, Spain and France before moving back to Sydney.

Baobab came about with the birth of my daughter Anya, and the desire to dress her in lovely, simple and comfortable clothing that wasn’t covered in Disney characters or brand logo’s.

My aim was to develop a label of modern children’s basics, made from soft 100% cotton knit with a sumptuous feel and simple but stylish look. I was intent on making Baobab fun for kids but also practical for parents, meaning easy to dress, easy to wear, easy to wash and affordable.

What inspires your work, and what do you want to inspire in others though your work?

My daughter, Anya is my primary source of inspiration as like most children, she has a truly magical view of the world. She is now 6 and has a very strong individual style. I find her way of combining colours and wrapping fabric around herself to be quite awe-inspiring.

I am also inspired by the everyday things around me… in nature, art, object design, vintage clothing, retro films and obscure online design sites.

I would like to think that the children who wear Baobab clothing can really just be themselves, relishing in their own creativity, running around, getting dirty and having fun. Baobab is about encouraging self-expression.

Who are your top 3 favourite baby and kids designers?

I love European kids labels as they have access to amazing fabrics and there is a true workmanship in their garments. Some of my favourites are:

Petit Bateau – for wonderful classic basics for kids (and adults). They make great quality cotton and I am mad about their kids undies which we stock up on whenever in Europe.

Imps&Elfs – a Dutch label with brilliant contemporary basics for babies and kids. It’s quite wearable but with a definite rock n roll edge.

Maan – a gorgeous Belgian label. Maan make really beautiful clothing from amazing fabrics in amazing colours. I love the Maan look.

What are your favourite things to do with your daughter?

At the moment we love to swim, we are both Cancers (crabs). We go to a variety of Sydney beaches and ocean pools but our favourite at the moment is Wylie’s in Coogee. We love to swim together in the clean water, climb the rock platform and re-house the shell creatures in the rock pools. We can lose ourselves for hours.

If you had one whole day to spend as you wish, what would you do?

I would like to take Anya back to the Cotswold house of my uncle, and on a perfect English summers day, have lunch under the willow tree surrounded by family and dogs. Or in autumn, we would travel by gondola along the Grand Canal to Piazza San Marco in Venice, marveling at the golden beauty. Or we could walk down down Omote Sando dori in Tokyo, for the best window shopping and stop for coffee and sandwiches at my favourite café in the back streets of Aoyama.

Or we could just spend a glorious summers afternoon at home, the windows and doors open wide, kids running through the house dressed up as princesses and fairies, the dog sleeping on his chair and I would be busy planting, weeding and raking the garden – heaven! In fact that was our day today!

What is your favourite childhood memory?

Riding my bicycle with friends from the street, pedaling madly down the canal and through the back streets of Cape Town, South Africa, where I grew up. In those days things were more relaxed and we could disappear for hours. What a sense of freedom we had.

Complete this sentence “baobab is…”

“Essential ‘everydaywear’ encouraging self-expression in kids.”
