It’s now mid-May and the winter chills are making themselves felt. Against the odds, I’m absolutely delighted by this – I love any excuse to break out my favourite coats, scarves, hats and boots, and luckily my two boys feel the same way.  Together we’ve been having fun looking through the pages of Paperartzi Boutique – www.paperartziboutique.com.au – where there’s a wonderful selection of winter fashion goodies on offer, and choosing our favourites.

One of our all time favourite books is Nick Bland’s award winning, The Very Cranky Bear. We just love telling the story with a lot of animation and overacting. The rhyming verse is perfect for young ears, while for grown ups, the bite sized life lessons add value to this endearing tale. Not only is it a pleasure to read but also a real treat to look at, and so when my friend told me she was working on a project to animate the story and create an interactive app, I was both intrigued and excited.

The Very Cranky Bear app is a fabulous take on the original story and is narrated by Australian actor Angus Sampson. You can listen and interact with Angus or become the narrator yourself, with a great feature allowing you to record the story and play back your own voice (a great idea for parents working late or away on business who still want to be part of the bedtime routine). We’ve had fun doing this, although it did take us a few attempts to get it right! We downloaded it onto my iphone and it’s a great distraction when the groceries need to be done. My eldest loves to tilt the phone and watch the pages move around, while our youngest finds the roar of the bear endlessly hilarious.

My expertise in reading this story will finally become public as I read it at the bookshop for the annual National Simultaneous Storytime event on May 23rd. It’s a terrific book that will make you giggle and wriggle with delight. It’s sequel, The Very Itchy Bear, was published in August 2010. And in June 2012 The Very Hungry Bear will be released.
