The Tooth Fairy Cometh: Accoutrements for the Modern Age

Posted: February 24th, 2009

Today’s post written by Edwina

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

For me, the Tooth Fairy epitomises the magic of childhood. The excitement a wobbly tooth brings to the household is infectious.  Sometimes they are wobbly for a mere day or two, sometimes it could be weeks. I imagine for those stubborn little toothy-pegs, a sweepstakes could be held to guess the correct date or time of its eventual release.

But the real anticipation is for the eventual visit by you-know-who, and the coin or treasure, is the real prize.

Which brings me onto the modern day Tooth Fairy dilemma – how much?

Apparently in the USA the average haul for a baby tooth is $2.68. Amongst my friends a gold coin or two seems to be the norm. The most paid by the TF in our house was $5.00. (Still not sure how that happened, I think it was guilt money because the Tooth Fairy forgot our little offering 2 nights in a row!!)

Which leads me onto my new love – The Official Tooth Fairy Kit. According to Gilda Scott, Sorter at the Office of the Tooth Fairy, “The Official Certificates of Record have increased the speed and efficiency of our filling capabilities by 47%”. I am hoping the introduction of this level of bureaucracy to our household will have an effect on the local chapter of the Tooth Fairy, and there will not be a repeat of past tardiness.

Whilst I was looking I couldn’t help but stumble across some more fabo tooth-related accoutrements.

The Official Tooth Fairy Kit from Monkeytail & Welllington, $21.95
Twinklers Flashing Timer Toothbrush from Urban Baby $4.95 $3.00
Animal Suction Clip from Urban Baby $1.95
Tooth Fairy Shadow Puppet
from Monkeytail & Welllington, $15.00
Lelli Kelly Silver Trainer from Where Did You Get That? $95.00 $69.95

Best Baby Journals: Recording Special Memories in Style

Posted: January 16th, 2009

Today’s post written by Kat

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

It goes without saying that the birth of your first child is a precious moment, and recording every single moment is one of the joys of being a new parent.

It also goes without saying that by the time you get to your second or third onwards, despite the best of intentions, the novelty of dutifully recording every event can start to wane, and finding the time is near impossible. My mum for example, as the third of 4 children, can only find one solitary picture of herself as a bub, and definitely no baby book. Which might explain a lot…but I digress!

Here is a rundown on baby books so beautiful that you’ll be clamouring to fill them with gorgeous memories of your growing brood. All your kids will thank you, except perhaps when you show that cute picture of your now-teenage daughter picking her nose to her cool new boyfriend…

The Binth Baby Journal at Tiny People

This is a gorgeous unisex option. Handcrafted with recycled white stock paper, cotton cloth cover and presented in a beautiful keepsake box. It’s not exactly a budget option but remember, even Mastercard can’t buy memories. Just a nice place to put them.

Generation Wonder have created their own Wonder Year Journal

A beautiful combination of scrapbook and journal, the Wonder Year Journal allows you to piece together a year in your little one’s life. Kids will adore looking back on themselves and as it has heaps of space for personalisation, as adults they will truly cherish their story. It comes in matt green with a cloth case cover, 128 pages of text and 12 insert cards for pictures – and it’s only $27.95!

I love the story behind Milestone Press’ A Book About Me:

“Annabel actually gave Fiona a Winnie-the-Pooh baby journal for her first born.  As they marvelled at Annabel’s momentary lapse in taste (because the book was free)  they dreamed up the perfect baby book.”

A Book About Me not only looks modern and sleek, it has been thoughtfully designed so that if you forget to record when your all little one’s teeth came through, you can just take the corresponding pages out, instead of leaving them embarrassingly blank. There’s room to add and subtract names and photos as you need, and possibly most imortantly, there is no branding on the cover, making it truly a book about your family!

I’ve mentioned the Laikonik Once A Year Book, from Mummy’s Favourite, before but I’m going to do it again because it’s such a beautiful idea!

Every year up to your child’s 18th birthday you add in just one photo of your child, and eventually the book unfolds concertina-style to reveal the story of your child growing and changing. Plus the book itself is completely gorgeous and will make a cherished heirloom!

For something a bit more traditional, the Baby Days Memory Book at Urban Baby is bright, colourful and full of nifty bit’n'bobs like stickers, envelopes and journal pages.

The pages are undated so you can record milestones when you want to, and the simple illustrations will delight your little one even beforen they realise the book is about them!

The very cute My Baby’s Journal, available soon at KidsGiftList

This is sweet enough to be age-appropriate but still stylish enough to be admired for years to come.

And finally, my personal favourite (yes, I found one with an elephant! I’m starting to sense a theme here): the Paper Eskimo Baby Journal.

Available at The Baby Shower Shop (a helluva comprehensive online store if there ever was one!) With simple and incredibly beautiful illustrations, it has heaps of room for photos, records birthday celebrations for up to five years, and comes in a gorgeous keepsake box  – despite being way too cute to keep stored away!

From top left in rows:

Binth Baby Journal $160
Generation Wonder The Wonder Year Journal $27.95
Milestone Press A Book About Me $44.95
Laikonik Once A Year Book $74.00
Baby Days Memory Book $24.95
My Baby’s Journal $44.95
Paper Eskimo Baby Journal $64.95

Store it in Style: The Best Small Storage Solutions for Your Kids Room

Posted: January 9th, 2009

Today’s post written by Kat

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

I once aspired to minimalism. My life was condensed to a backpack…and a fair bit of carry-on luggage, admittedly! Those days are long gone since our little Miss came along.

I’m 99.99% sure that once little people enter your life, you have to embrace and accept clutter.

Kids require so much stuff, alot of it neccessary, alot of it not so much. They fill your home with love and laughter, but occassionally you probably get a bit sick of tripping over Tonka trucks and finding crayons in the toilet.

Luckily, there is a whole world of nifty storage solutions at your fingertips, and not all of it plastic. These little beauties look so good you’ll thoroughly enjoy tidying up!

One of my fave storage solutions is the Fiona Kate range.

In a classic colour palette, her “box seats” are all at once a box, table and seat, and can be personalised to suit. Not only for kids, they’re fabulous for the office, kitchen, or garage as well!

They tick all the right boxes: recyclable, made in Australia, low cost, washable, light yet strong and they pack flat.

A starter pack sets you up with two storage boxes and a sturdy tabletop to fit together or use separately, and once you’ve got the hang of it the possibilities are really endless!

There are 4 box sizes, ranging from Mini (18cm x 36cm x 14cm) to Major (36cm x 52cm x 28cm), packs of removeable letters and chalkboard stickers to decorate, and flatpacked table tops in all colours. Go nuts!

Medium Starter Pack $99.95
Mini Storage box $12.95
Major Storage Box $39.95
Removeable Letters $12.95 per pack
Chalkboard Stickers 8 sheets, $10.95
Table Tops $29.95 ea

The Missi Missi Collapsible Storage boxes, stocked at Bubba Funk, are also pretty nifty – storage and a seat, all in one!

They come in pink or navy and Bubba Funk also stock a matching range of beanbags so you can kit out a whole room in style. Then, if you move or simply want to redecorate, it folds down ito itself to make it easy to, well, store your storage away!

Missi Missi storage boxes and beanbags are $99.95 ea.

Tiny People stock these beautiful Toy Storage Cubes by Dwell Studio, which are completely gorgeous in nurseries or kid’s rooms.

I adore the whimsical prints, plus you can get matching bibs, blankets, towels and linen! Made from a heavy duty canvas bin with uncoated cotton canvas lining, they add a dash of bright colour and oodles of personality to a room!

Dwell Studio Toy Storage Cubes $136 ea

The delightful Kroom Furniture is stocked at ShopHouse, including this incredibly cute Storage Bench which would brighten up any nursery or playroom, and it’s made from at least 70% recycled materials while being 100% recyclable!

Krooom do a great range of versatile storage solutions. The Maggie Storage Shelf would look so elegant in a little girl’s room, but also so pretty in an office space or even your bedroom!

Same goes for the Juliette organiser ($45.95) – man, does my desk need one of these! (Eds. note – I have one, and it is fab-u-lous!) Made from recycled corrugated cardboard, it’s perfect for storing files, magazines or organising homework and schoolbooks for older kids.

Kroom Storage bench $49.95
Kroom Maggie Storage Shelf $75.95

If you’re not so into the blue/pink combo, try Kikki-K for storage boxes in colourways like red and black, which again are perfect for older kids or storage that can be used in any room in the house.

These cd boxes are pretty darn cool, while the A4 Cloth Storage Boxes are great for storing memories, drawings, and tidbits as they grow.

Kikki K Cd Storage $14.95
Kikki K A4 Cloth Storage boxes $34.95 ea

Check out these super cute ideas from the wondrous
Urban Baby
by Monsieur and Madame.

These toy storage bags have such a delightful print and can be used not only for toys, but for shopping, laundry, the beach…

Urban Baby also stock gorgeous storage boxes by Tiger Tribe. They have felt lining and fold away neatly when not in use, though they’re so cute I’m not sure why you’d want to hide them away!

Finally, keep the bathroom neat with the Boon Frog Pod which attaches to the wall with semi-permanent adhesive strips, and is a hygienic and funky way to store bath toys and products. (Plus he’s sooo funky!)

Monsieur and Madame toy storage bags $24.50 ea
Tiger Tribe storage boxes
from $29.95 ea
Boon Frog Pod
$54.95

Sit Up and Take Notice: Highchair Shopping – Six of The Best In Profile

Posted: January 7th, 2009

Looking for a practical, low maintenance, comfortable and stylish highchair for your child? Don’t go past Nerida’s special feature on six of the best options on the market. Enjoy!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Stokke Tripp Trapp

My personal choice, and what we have at home, the Stokke Tripp Trapp looks Nordic super-cool and comes in a range of fantastic colours.

It doesn’t come with a tray which is a little tough at first, but not a problem by nine months or so, as you just pull it into any regular table.

Best of all, the chair can be easily wiped down and there are very few places for dried rice cereal to hide.

Although it seemed expensive for a high chair at the time, the chair grows with the child so that eventually it can be used for a chair for an adult (I heard a rumour that all staff at the Stokke headquarters use them at their desks). The chairs are also ergonomic so encourage good posture.

Stokke Tripp Trapp highchairs are available from Minimee.

FunPod

The FunPod has just recently arrived in Australia and is quite a clever piece of furniture. Like the Tripp Trapp, it is chair that grows with the child and can be used as a chair from six months to around 5 years of age.

It includes a tray that can be removed so that a child can sit directly at the dinner table and join in family dinners. By removing the chair the FunPod becomes a stool for children to stand on so that they are at workbench height.

I know my daughter loves helping me in the kitchen and this would be a perfect, safe way for her to see what I am doing while cooking.

The FunPod ticks all my boxes in terms of being easy to clean, practical, comfortable and stylish and is available at Metro Mum.

Nest

The Nest highchair is a very cool piece of furniture that has already achieved iconic status for its smooth edges and modern design.

The chair can be converted from high chair for a 6 month old to a low chair for a 6 year old. Its tulip design has ensured that it is one of the most stable highchairs on the market – perfect if you have a very active toddler who tries to grab everything in sight while waiting for their meal. The chair is easy to clean, practical, comfortable and incredibly stylish. Note that the tray is on the small side.

Nest is available in four colours, white, black, bubblegum pink and retro orange at Urban Baby.

Bloom Fresco

What first struck me about the Bloom Fresco highchair is the incredible range of colours it comes in, ranging from white to bright shades of purple and orange.

The chair can be used from newborn, reclined back like a bassinet, to two years, as a playseat.

In between these ages, it is a very practical highchair that can be height adjusted easily (pneumatic assist!)

The Bloom is easy to clean, practical, comfortable and great to look at. It is available from Kido Store.

HandySitt

The Handysitt is a clever Danish designed travel seat that is easy to clean (tick!), comfortable (tick!), practical (tick!) and great to look at (tick!).

It can be used from 7 months to 4 years and straps on to most chairs, making a comfortable highchair and then packs away flat to take anywhere, or used as space saving highchair in the home.

The HandySitt is available online at The Infant Boutique.

Kaboost

Kaboost is a rather clever contraption that boosts chairs so that a child aged from 20 months to 6 years can sit at the same height as the dinner table without a special seat.

Kaboost sits at the base of the chair and is easy transportable so that it can be used at home or when out and about.

The Kaboost is very easy to clean, practical and a good solution for when kids are a little older but are still a little to sit on a normal seat at the dinner table.

The Kaboost is available from Belly2Baby.

1. Stokke Tripp Trapp $349.95 $323.70 from Minimee
2. FunPod Highchair 3 -in-1 $379.00 from Metro Mum
3. Nest Highchair $695.00 $545.00 from Urban Baby
4. Bloom Fresco $749.00 from Kido Store
5. HandySitt $149.95 $134.96 from The Infant Boutique
6. Kaboost $59.95 from Belly 2 Baby

Stick ‘Em Up! The Most Stylish Wall Stickers and Decals for Your Kid’s Room

Posted: January 2nd, 2009

Today’s post written by Kat

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

When I was backpacking in Europe and had no cashola/space for a Christmas tree, I simply cut out strips of wrapping paper, interspersed with rows of lollies, and blu-tacked them diagonally on the wall of our flat in Edinburgh.

Little did I know that our improvised wall art (which, by the way, looked pretty cool and was also edible, always a bonus) was actually the height of what’s hip in decor.

Wall stickers/art/decals or whatever you like to call them, are an inexpensive and easy way to update a room (and they’re not just for kids!) Removable – renters, rejoice! – and without the long-term commitment of a new paint job, there are SO many designs out there it can be a bit daunting. So here’s the KSF lowdown on the hippest buys you can nab online.

Mooo wall stickers are made from “a strong fine-weave adhesive fabric that doesn’t stretch easily and will stick to almost any surface including, brick, glass, and painted walls.”

Mooo have a huge range including these delightful Chalkboard Stickers from $15 a pack. Imagine your kids’ delight when they’re told they can write on the walls!

They also have a huge range of absurdly cute sticker designs, all with a plethora of colour options, from $60 for a pack of 48.

I found these For Walls Chalkboard decals over at the The Hip Infant and immediately fell in love. This little owl ($29.95) is possibly too cute to draw on, but he’d look so adorable perched on a wall! THI have a large range of For Walls stickers – look, I found elephants! – suitable for baby, boy’s and girl’s rooms.

Monsters or Robots look totally cool for little boys, while girls will love the pretty Shimmering Butterflies or Magic Tree designs.

For Wall Sticker packs start at $39.95.

Over at Urban Baby, a wide range of Wallcandy kits are just waiting to adorn your walls (or chairs, or tables, or wherever!).

Imagine how cool the Candy Factory ($119.95) would look, and how much fun to use – the kit contains 5.5m of lawn and 12 lollipop flowers for you, sorry, I mean the kids, to ‘plant’!

The Rococco Chalkboard ($49.95 inc chalk) would look equally at home in your kitchen, or try the beautiful Season Elements kit ($49.95) in the nursery.

Quite frankly, I’m lusting after them all!

Ekidna Kids stock wall art by Bosco Bear and My Munchkin Home, and you’re spoilt for choice: each and every design is just sooo cute! My picks? For the nursery, this giant mint Giraffe (on sale for $71.96) including dots to add as you like; for little girls a magical giant Fairy Castle (on sale, $103.96); or a herd of roaring Dinosaurs ($89) for little boys to play amongst! Bosco Bear also do a great range of seasonal decals (like this chic Christmas tree set, $89) so you can totally get into the spirit of the season, without necessitating a total renovation!

You’ve probably seen the gorgeous designs by Little Chippi floating around quite a few of your fave online stores – Shop House stock them all plus some cute Little Chippi Gift cards – and there’s a good reason this brand is so popular: the designs manage to combine cuteness with chic, and they’re Australian made.

I can just imagine a little boys room being suitably adorable with the Drive Time set ($82.95) and I’m seriously contemplating the Red Robin ($82.95) for my daughter’s room…if we can make space around all those elephants and owls…

Surfing around in the name of research, I also found the Wall Sticker Company, based in Melbourne and stocking designs for the home, office, kid’s rooms as well as a custom design service.

Check out this cool Elephant or Giraffe Custom name design (perfectamundo: “Charlotte” on an elephant, my search is over!) for $75, or imagine those most magical of words, “Once Upon A Time” ($55) tucked into your child’s favourite reading corner. These cute Jungle Animals ($65) are perfect for a nursery, or delight little boys with these cool Monsters ($65)! While you’re at it, add a calming influence to your work or study space with this gorgeously simple Blue Wren ($50) or consider inspirational quotes to add a point of difference to other rooms (from $65).
