KSF Special Weekend Feature: Australian Designers - Down Under Delights

Posted: August 16th, 2008

Here at KidStyleFile, we have a passion for home-grown design and industry. Today Miki celebrates some of our favourite Australian designers and stores. Go Aussie, go!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Today, I’ve featured just a handful of the great talent that Australian baby and kids clothing and product designers represent. The passion and creativity of these designers is evident in the imaginativeness and quality of the products. You can grab everything for your baby or child from clothing to decor to nappy bags - all Aussie made, designed or owned - right here!

Where Did You Get That

Here’s a sneaky tip for you: Currently Where Did You Get That - www.wheredidyougethat.com.au - have 50% off winter Tommy Rocket, Two Belles and Moppit! That’s a mega-saving, so snap them up while the deal lasts.

Tommy Rocket and its sister-brand Two Belles are seriously hip. With slightly eclectic designs mixed with good old fashioned quality, you know you’re onto a winner.

Moppit is a favourite with everyone. Bright and funky for boys and girls, its popularity is growing constantly - and deservedly too!

Infancy
New South Wales-based Infancy has some oh-so-beautiful products for babies and children. I love the spotty rompers (too cute!), and the kimono-style rompers are perfect for newborn babies who all hate having clothing dragged over their precious little heads. The whole Infancy range has been thoughtfully designed with the baby’s AND parents’ needs in mind, and it looks great to boot!

My favourite place to get Infancy is at The Hip Infant - www.thehipinfant.com.au. See the full range of The Hip Infant’s Infancy here.

There’s a great range with fantastic discounts already in place, and you can get an extra 10% discount with the Shop4Kids magazine code (see bottom of page for details).

Mill & Mia
Ahhh, Mill & Mia. Well I don’t need to introduce them, do I - you all already know and love the brand! After all, it’s only one of the coolest kids brands in the world, let alone Australia (in my totally unbiased opinion ;)).

I will say this: At the moment, you can’t do better than ShopHouse - www.shophouse.com.au - for Mill & Mia. Not only is all Mill & Mia already heavily discounted, but you can get FREE express postage using the Shop4Kids discount code.

Baobab
I LOVE Baobab - www.baobab.com.au. No really, I do. Absolutely adore everything they’ve ever produced. It’s the simple, clean lines, the bright seasonal colours, the innocence of the designs… just everything about the brand appeals to me. I don’t think I’m alone either!

Baobab are cheapcheapcheap at the moment, as you can take 20% off storewide (yes, that includes their well-stocked sale section which already has up to 50% off!) using the Shop4Kids discount code. Bargain!

Cocoon Couture

Beautiful kids’ decor is a joy to behold, and Cocoon Couture is no exception. Charming, whimsical, gentle designs, perfect for a nursery right up to a school-aged kid’s room.

The beanbags are so great! There’s a huge range of them, and I think the best place to get them at the moment is 5 Little Monkeys - www.5littlemonkeys.com.au. Not only do they stock the full beanbag range at discounted prices, but you can also use the Shop4Kids discount code to take another 15% off, bringing them down to $140.00 $125.00 $106.25!

Il Tutto

Famous now for being Cate Blanchett’s nappy bag of choice, Il Tutto really are the last word in stylish ways to get your baby’s gear from point A to point F via B, C, D and E - as most of us need to do on a daily basis!

Exquisitely soft leather, well thought-out interiors which are enhanced even more by stunning liner fabric, and the cool little ‘monster bear’ hanging off the bag (these monster bears will be available as key rings soon too!), Il Tutto is just the bees knees.

The full range is stocked at Bubba Funk - www.bubbafunk.com.au, and also keep a close on on Itty Bitty Yuppy - www.ittybittyyuppy.com.au; their Il Tutto stock is low at the moment but should be coming back soon. And more to the point, you can use the Shop4Kids code to take 15% off!

Home Library Book Recommendations - Hands Up If Your Kid Loves Animals!

Posted: August 3rd, 2008

Today Miki brings you some more wonderful books to read with your kids, with this week’s books all about animals - surely every something close to every child’s heart!

We’ve provided links to all the books at Fishpond - www.fishpond.com.au, so introducing them to your library is easy peasy - especially at these discounts. Orders of over $50 have free shipping too!

Read more KidStyleFile Book Reviews here.

***********************************************************************************************************

Time For Bed by Mem Fox, illustrated by Jane Dyer - $38.99 $21.91

Time For Bed

This little book is just perfect for bedtime. Each of the animals in the book is being shushed off to sleep by its mother with a sweet little comment on each page: ‘Time for bed little calf, little calf / what happened today that made you laugh?’ and so on. The illustrations are adorable (the baby mouse! so cute!!) and really appealing for little ones.

It’s a favourite in our house and our little one is only 12 months, but I think older toddlers and preschoolers would love it too.

My Cat Likes To Hide In Boxes by Eve Sutton and Lynley Dodd - $14.99 $13.90

My Cat Likes To Hide In Boxes
This is fantastic rhyming fun for kids. ‘The cat from Spain flew an aeroplane, the cat from France liked to sing and dance… but my cat likes to hide in boxes.’ For families with cats it’s an excellent kick-off point for discussing their cat’s habits (great for the kids’ observational skills), and for the families without cats it’s just a darn good read! The illustrations are by Lynley Dodd (of Hairy Maclairy fame) so you know you’re onto a winner there. Ages three and up will probably get the most out of this one.

We’re Going On A Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury - $15.99 $14.82

We’re going on a bear hunt
This was my absolute favourite book as a preschooler, so much so that twenty-odd years later my long-suffering parents can still quote most of it off by heart! Kids love the actions and the pace, but be ready with earplugs for the shrieks when they finally find the bear! Not recommended for bedtime; brilliant for an active time of day. This book is great for almost all ages (including adults).

Sheep In A Jeep by Nancy E Shaw and Margot Apple - $15.99 $12.51

Sheep in a jeep
One of the ‘Sheep by Shaw‘ series (others include Sheep On A Ship and Sheep In A Shop). Hilarious, catchy and just generally fun to read, these are aimed at the 4+ age group but I think you could probably get away with reading them to younger kids too. The illustrations are quirky and cute, but honestly it’s the dialogue that makes this book. Who wouldn’t want to read something with lines like this: “Jeep goes splash! Jeep goes thud! Jeep goes deep in gooey mud!” Kids love it, and they’re not the only ones!

The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister and J. Alison James (translator) - $45.99 $23.96

The rainbow fish

A sweet, gentle little book, perfect for bedtimes. The central theme is around sharing possessions (so especially brilliant if you’re trying to explain that concept to your toddler) but it’s also just a lovely little story. The illustrations are delightful too, with coloured foil stamping which catches the light beautifully. You’ll find that even newborn babies love this book because of the light reflections! I’d guess that it’s aimed at 2+ but really this is a good book from about 1 month and up.
