The land of children’s fashion design here in Australia is as vast as our glorious country. There are the small, intimate labels, just like our small townships through to internationally recognised designers living abroad that still call Australia home. The spectrum of tastes runs from the bohemian right through to the traditional. There is such a vast point of difference between each label, but what they each have in common is a strong Australian identity.

Today bring you Part 2 of our two part series on Australian labels that design and produce their collections right here in Australia. This is not an easy task: there are few incentives for them to do so; the government offers little support – taxes are high, and subsidies are low – and the benefits of off-shore production promise lower production costs and higher profit margins. It’s true that you may pay a little more for Australian made, but we’re confident that you will be happy with what you receive for it: the knowledge that you are supporting local industry and reducing your carbon footprint, that fair working conditions are in place, and that you are purchasing a high quality product that will take everything that your child dishes out to it and then still be good to go again.

Well Spotted!

Anyone who can pull off a Star Wars themed tee and be totally stylish rather than just geeky is a winner in my book. In the words of the designer behind Well Spotted, the label was created “out of parental joy, expectation & well, frustration!”. Tony Clayton (whose resume includes stints at both Mambo and Macrs), the man behind Well Spotted,  always held the  belief that if all our big companies take the manufacturing of garments overseas, no one will be able to make even a t-shirt here in Australia. He swore that if ever ventured into creating his own range, he would keep it in Australia. Starting off making slogan tees for adults, Well Spotted somehow morphed into a range for kids (I think son Finbar may have been a bit of the inspiration here), and true to his word, Tony ensured that the entire label was an Australian product. Having studied Art History at uni, then working as both a ceramic artist and hairdresser amongst other jobs, Victoria Crisp became inspired to create the label Brusselsprouts when she was pregnant with her second son. With her husband  on the road driving road trains for the mines, Victoria sews at home (and now runs her new B&M shop) in Kalgoorlie, West Australia whilst also balancing her duties as mummy to two gorgeous little boys. Miki and her two boys, aged 2.5 years old, and 2.5 months old respectively.

Hard to believe it’s only a few weeks ’til the jolly fat man in the red suit slides down the chimney, isn’t it?  I’m sure I’m not the only one who is astonished at how fast this year has flown by!

2009 has brought about some quite large changes for my little family, not least a temporary move to the UK, my elder son’s second birthday, and a new addition in the shape of my younger son, now nearly three months old.

All year I’ve been looking through beautiful online children’s boutiques (can I just say here how much I love my job?!) and the whole time I’ve had Christmas in the back of my mind.  It’s hard to narrow down the enormous range of choices, but here’s what I’ve decided on for this year. These fit our bill to perfection!

• An Alimrose bib and matching handsqueaker for my baby boy – the bibs are beautiful quality, and I love the noises the handsqueekers make.  They’re the perfect size for little baby hands.
• A Radio Flyer Ranger Wagon – this is actually the gift from the boys’ doting grandparents, who wanted my suggestion for a great toy the boys could share and enjoy for years to come.
• Mooo personalised wooden name puzzles for each of them – educational and lots of fun!
• The Plan Toys Sorting Cone – both kids will enjoy playing with this, and like all Plan Toys it’s beautifully designed and made.
• Their big present from Father Christmas – a matched pair of Wheely Bugs, the large size for Master Two and the small size for the baby (who will grow into his during the next year).  I can’t wait to see them tearing around on their Bugs together!

It might not feel like it when you step outside, but summer is well and truly underway at our style mecca, Baby’s Got Style – www.babysgotstyle.com.au. While we’re looking at girlswear, if you have daughters you simply must look at all the incredibly pretty new dresses instore.  We’re talking brands like BIG by Fiona Scanlan, Three Little Trees, Baobab and Ivy Designs.  There really is something there for every girl, whether she loves to lounge around in comfy gear (in which case she’s a Baobab girl) or dress up in pretty frills (hello BIG by Fiona), is a modern miss (Three Little Trees is right up her alley) or has a penchant for vintage (Ivy Designs couldn’t be more perfect).

Don’t worry if, like me, you’re a mum of boys – there’s plenty instore for them too. Looking for something to top off your son’s outfit?  The range of hats from Goorin Kids has me drooling; it’s incredibly hip and there are so many that I want for my boy it’s just not funny!  I’m currently tossing up between the Lil Buddy Straw Cowboy Hat and the Baby Oliver Plaid Fedora.  Perhaps I’ll just get both…
